Manage episode 436476456 series 3143420
Nellie Lutcher was a popular African-American jazz and R&B singer, pianist and songwriter, who is largely forgotten today. Born in Louisiana in 1912, she began playing piano at a young age and eventually formed her own band, The Nellie Lutcher Trio. She gained popularity in the 1940s with hits such as "Hurry On Down" and "Fine Brown Frame." Lutcher's unique style blended jazz, blues, and boogie-woogie. She was known for her distinctive vocal phrasing and playful lyrics. Lutcher continued to perform and record throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and her music influenced many artists who followed in her footsteps. In 1952, she was celebrated on the popular NBC-TV show "This Is Your Life". You're going to hear Nellie Lutcher at the height of her popularity in the 1940s, on the American Armed Forces Radio network show Command Performance, and then on the Spike Jones Spotlight Revue on CBS Radio.
