This episode we were blessed with the opportunity to sit down with filmmaker Abdul Malik Abbott who has directed some of the most legendary pieces in Hip-Hop history. He was very instrumental in creating the “Big Willie” persona in the early days of Roc-a-fella Records and Jay-Z’s career. He directed such classics as “I can’t Get With That” which happens to be Jay-Z’s first solo video. “In My Lifetime” the original and remix ,“Dead President’s”, “Ain’t No”, “Streets Is Watching” the unique visual soundtrack and “State Property” the notable feature film just to name a few.

We Discuss:

· His start in film which led to being on the crew of Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” and “Mo Better Blues”

· Big break in videos with Jive Records and legendary Jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln

· Working with a group named “Original Flavor” who were managed by Damon Dash, which eventually led to long working relationship with Roc-a-fella Records

· Being instrumental in the process to creating the artistic image of Jay-Z

· How the legendary Monopoly scene in the “Dead President’s” video came about

· The difference between Damon Dash, Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke

· Having nearly 30 years in the business and staying afloat

· What video projects were his favorite to work on

· Favorite aspect of filmmaking to work on

· Difference between the industry today and in the past

· The one thing in the past that he passed up on that he would reconsider doing in hindsight

· The new black renaissance in the film industry

· Advice for young creatives trying to break into the industry

· Getting involved in the music industry with his company Blue Music Productions and B.O.S.S.
