On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. My weekly task is actually twice as important as I expected but it will push me to work even harder to prove that I could finish it on time. The key lifestyle concept of the day is about the reason why I think our daily life should always be driven by gratitude.

Another busy week in the role of The French Intern at Adidas. In this episode, I'm talking about several topics such as the power of slogans and proverbs, that sticks to people's mind. Another hot topic that was introduced this week was the branding and its importance for consumers. This week felt shorter than usual as I've had the chance to participate in presentation skills seminar, in Japanese, as well as a training for our team. In this week's episode, I'm talking about various interesting and new topics, as the title shows, and I hope you'll enjoy it! This week was full of work, with a new task almost everyday. In terms of key learning, side projects like online selling and the creation of my website brought me some good ideas. On top of that, I started a marketing book about how to make your ideas stick in people's mind and be easily remembered. This week 10's episode gathers the day 39 to 43 of my internship for Adidas Japan, during which I mainly worked on a big project regarding the pricing analysis of Adidas and its competitors. I also decided to wake up earlier, in order to have the time to work on my side hustles in the morning, before going to work and talk about it in this episode. Enjoy! As I was really diving deep into my big task today, I realized that I almost always use the same 3-rule methodology to tackle all my new challenges. Keeping the discipline of using those 3 golden rules help me a lot when it comes to project management. Today was the official kickoff of our new project regarding the adidas's range architecture. I spent the whole day trying to get familiar with the tools and the methodology that has to be used for it. In the evening, I joined my first session of Sekai creator, an 8-week startup creation programm for students in Tokyo. There, I realized there are two main kind of ideas: customer-centric and product-centric, two concepts that I further explain in today's episode. Just like today, it's not always easy to work in a japanese environment, as I'm not billingual yet. During big meetings, when managers are debating, it's very likely that I won't understand much of it, which means one thing: I have to keep working hard on improving my japanese! The key learning of the day could be summed up with: "Whenever you perform a task, you have to think of and try to understand the big picture and the reason why you’ve been ask to do that specific thing." While today wasn't a busy day at work, I had the chance to be invited for a football gme (Japan-Uruguay) by one of my colleague. Was it random? Not really. This is mainly thanks to the fact that I spent time to build a relationship with him, and that we are both football passionates. While today was a lot less busy than last week, I was assigned a new task that would have taken me forever without my coworker's help. That situation made me think of how important it is to show how grateful you are, when somebody takes the time to teach/help you. Today was so busy that I started to use Eisenhower matrix to help me rank my tasks and focus on what is most urgent and important. I tell you more about this productivity hack in today's episode. The medium post: https://medium.com/@baptistedelannoy/urgent-or-important-96c50ee9950e
Today was another hectic day at work, but I managed to produce a pretty good work that satisfied both my coworkers and my boss. For that reason, my learning of the day comes from Dale Carnegie's book, that I'm reading during lunch break, which taught me about arguments and how to win it ... in a way. Today was by far the busiest day since I started my internship at Adidas Japan and it seems like the whole week will be quite busy: I love it! On top of that, those couple of days working for my new tutor made me realize how lucky I am to be greatly managed and how it will train me to become a good manager when my time comes. Today was a rather busy day, full of new tasks that will continue over next week. The key lesson of the day is about the power of smiling, that I discovered through the book I'm reading as well as a discussion at work with my boss ... Smile! Today was the 1st of the 2 "brand days" at Adidas, where divisions presented to us more detailed plans and objectives for the future seasons to come. I also had the chance to discuss with the former intern at my position and realized that excel is definitely a skill I should try to further develop ... and so do you! First of all, sorry for the audio quality, will get better tomorrow, I swear. Today was an exciting day, full of company-wide presentation of new objectives for the organization etc... Attending all those meetings made me realize and create a top 7 of presentation rules that I noticed today, of course it's not exhaustive but those were my feelings of the day.
