At 2:40 a.m. on December 9, 2001, Michael Peterson, an author and former mayoral candidate, contacted Durham County 9-1-1 services to summon help for his wife, Kathleen. Peterson claimed that Kathleen, who appeared to have fallen on a narrow, back staircase, was still breathing.
