Studio Noize goes all over the world to bring you the best art conversations. In Episode 106, we connect with South African painter Leila Fanner. Her work is elegant and beautiful. We get to know Leila and how her upbringing has influenced her paintings. Leila tells us how she found her way back to abstract art after a long hiatus, the stories behind the black silhouetted figures in her Picnic series, and what has driven her to find an international audience. Leila Fanner is a painter and illustrator.
Born to a South African artist and an African American musician, she was raised in South Africa and currently works from her studio in the Western Cape. She recently joined trending LA gallery, Band of Vices, curated by Terrell Tilford, with a successful mini solo held in October 2020. Her figurative and abstract work is currently also available online via Rise Art
After graduating from The JHB National School of the Arts Johannesburg, Leila received private tutoring in graphic design and water-colour painting, holding her first exhibition in 1993 at the age of 23. Her current medium is oil and oil pastel on wood and canvas.
She regularly exhibits in annual group exhibitions locally and recently in New York at the Harlem Fine Arts Show. She has held 3 solo's to date and has been a headline artist for four years taking part in Solo Studio's, an annual fine art event in Riebeek Kasteel.
