Moments like the ones we’ve faced this week can stir up a storm of emotions in us—grief, anger, hopelessness, even the desire to retreat to the mountains and never interact with anyone again. These events press on us in ways that are hard to describe. But in the middle of it all, we must remember this: we serve and worship King Jesus. He was not caught off guard by any of the tragedies that took place this week. And none of these events diminish His authority or control in the slightest.
As we begin today, I want to read from the Baptist Catechism, Question #10:
Question: What are the decrees of God?
Answer: The decrees of God are His eternal purpose according to the counsel of His will, whereby, for His own glory, He has foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.
This is why theology matters. This is why it is so vital for you and me to be anchored in the Word of God.
Ephesians 1:11 declares: “He works all things according to the counsel of His own will.”
This may have caught us off guard, but it did not catch Christ off guard.
