Jake Berber and Ding Jie Tan join us to share the founding story of Prefer. Prefer is a food tech start-up working to bring a new twist on a classic. Coffee, without the coffee bean. They are upcycling day old bread, okara and brewers spent grain and through proprietary fermentation and then roasting, they are creating a coffee bean substitute with approximately 10x less CO2 than traditional coffee.

The two cofounders met at Entrepreneur First. Wanting to do something in the sustainable food space with fermentation, after a careful market study, they landed on bean free coffee. Currently, they are scaling up production at the Food Tech Innovation Centre, Nurasa’s flagship pilot and development facility with go to market scheduled for November 2023.
