On June 25th 2025, in collaboration with Open Folk, we presented our first ever live interview event in Los Angeles. As Open Folk put it: "In These Lines is a live event where three artists each bring one song — not just to perform, but to explore. They sit down with Sofia Loporcaro, host of Before The Chorus, to talk about where the song came from, what it meant to write it, and what it still holds. Then they play it. Just the song, and the truth behind it." Summer's not over yet, and it's not too late to tackle the tough goals still on your heart. Permanent weight loss and powerful intercessory prayer are possible this season. Spiritual Fasting strengthens both body and soul, preparing you for the deeper mission God is calling you to. Based on the book, The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy, I am exploring how they relate to spiritual fasting and personal growth. Focusing on what we lack (the gap) keeps us stuck in negativity and self-comparison, while celebrating our progress (the gain) opens us up to gratitude, confidence, and God’s guidance. Sometimes, it takes real struggle to get serious. But like David facing Goliath or Moses leaving Egypt, you can choose to jump in—prayer and fasting together. Just like the high dive at the pool - take the leap! Doing hard things changes everything! This week, I am reviewing the final chapter of my book, reflecting on my journey from hustle to healing, and showing how spiritual fasting, the sacraments, and community offer a life-giving path back to joy. Everything you’re searching for—peace, purpose, healing, clarity—even weightloss—is already available to you in the Catholic Church. But you have to slow down to receive it. This episode invites you to return not only to spiritual fasting but to the sacraments, community, and a compassionate rhythm of life. There is a balance between being a “Martha” and a “Mary,” which encourages us to shift toward stillness, presence, and sacramental living as the path to lasting transformation. Have you ever reached for food—not out of hunger—but out of habit, stress, or the hope of feeling just a little better ? If so, you're not alone. In fact, you may be caught in what I call The Vice Cycle —a pattern driven by sugar, overdesire, and the false promises of quick comfort. This week’s episode is based on Chapter 9 of my book, Delay and Pray®, and it's one of the most important episodes yet. We’re talking about how dopamine is tricking your brain, why cravings feel so urgent (and what to do instead), the difference between overhunger and true hunger, and how to step from the Vice Cycle into the Virtue Cycle , where peace and purpose live. You were made for more than short-term comfort. You were made for lasting freedom. As we celebrate the 4th of July, let's remember that true freedom isn't just found in fireworks and barbecues, but in feasting on the beauty of life with a heart rooted in gratitude. Today, we’re talking about Chapter 8 of my Delay and Pray® book, a chapter that's all about one of the most joyful and misunderstood parts of our fasting rhythm: the feast . We'll walk through the Eat Fast Feast cycle and consider a new mindset around feast days. Instead of binging or using food to numb emotions, true feasting becomes a deliberate, sacramental, moderate, and joyful act of honoring God. I encourage you to embrace the true freedom found in Christ - the freedom to enjoy food without being enslaved by it. I am a woman on a mission to help you trade sugar for sanctity, one bite and one prayer at a time. Today, we’re diving into Chapter 7 of the Delay and Pray ® book - and if I could title this episode anything else, it might be “Your Gut Is Not Just a Place for Digestion - It’s a Sacred Space.” Because here’s the truth: our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and how we treat them matters. And in today’s culture, that sacred space is under attack … from the inside out. Sugar will never satisfy. But the abundant life of Jesus will. This week’s episode might just change how you think about digestion, donuts, and what it means to truly “glorify God in your body” (1 Cor 6:19-20). Today is all about imagining yourself at the dinner table with Jesus . What is being served? The body of Jesus and your body. Really - that is what we will concentrate on in today’s episode and Chapter 6 of my book, Delay and Pray®. I am inviting you to dinner - but not in the way you might expect. We’re talking about what I call “Dining In with Jesus.” This is a powerful mindset and practice that will transform not only your body as you dine in on your fat stores but your soul, too, as you crave the Word of God and the Body of Christ in the Eucharist over eating anything else. If you’ve ever struggled with intermittent fasting or felt like food had too much control in your life, this episode is for you. Drawing on scripture, the teachings of the Saints, and personal coaching experience, Beth explains how our thoughts shape our emotions, actions, and ultimately our results. Beth shares how we can identify harmful thinking, build bridge thoughts grounded in faith, and align our mindset with God’s divine truth. We continue going through Beth's book Delay and Pray®, with Chapter 4 this week, focusing on the life-changing impact of “believing harder than you work.” She draws powerful lessons from the story of Mary and Martha, showing how prioritizing faith and trust in Jesus, especially in our fasting journeys, can bring peace and real transformation. Beth shares a touching personal story about her mother during the pandemic, highlighting how spiritual fasting and unwavering belief can lead to miracles in even the most desperate situations. In this episode, Beth unpacks Chapter 3 of her book, Delay and Pray®, and tackles the idea of being "Happy, Thin, and Rich Right Now." Rather than chasing happiness or peace as distant rewards, Beth reveals how they’re available in the present, regardless of your weight, finances, or circumstances, by rooting yourself in God’s mercy and peace. With honest stories and practical tips, she shares how spiritual fasting, prayer, and a shift in mindset can help you find joy and richness today, not just when you meet your goals . When you need comfort and love, do you turn to food? Do you find yourself worshipping food - almost unconsciously? It reminds me of the Bible verse, "their god is their stomach" which appears in Philippians 3:19. If you find yourself thinking about food all day long - from breakfast to lunch to dinner with snacks in between, then you are not alone. This week's guest is my client Teresa Villano, who joined the Delay and Pray® program a year ago and has been an active member since then. She has been a Nurse Practitioner for 26 years and shares her experience with dieting and weight struggles. She has come a long way, once telling me: Obesity kept me from seeing my potential sainthood and the true purpose of my life - serving the Lord, not my appetite. I have changed that now. As a Catholic Mindset Coach, I use a Thomistic Thought Model which teaches that your thoughts create your results. What I have found is that this is true about weight and also about money. If you think you can't lose the weight and find food freedom even through Spiritual Fasting - you won't do it. If you think you'll never find financial freedom, then you'll never have it. But if you can change your mindset about these things - invite Jesus into it and meld your will into His - then the sky is the limit and all of a sudden, food freedom and financial freedom are yours! This episode is going to be a little different as we just experienced the opening ceremony of the Olympics in France last weekend, where some of the opening scenes were outright immoral, confusing, and mocked the Catholic faith in several ways. I felt called to create a response on my podcast on this subject because there is such a need for prayer and fasting now for justice and reparation for what happened. We can see the culture sinking deeply into vice – a place that is very immoral and dangerous for the soul as well as the body. In the Delay and Pray™ program, we talk quite a bit about virtues and vices, and it seems as if the world has no idea what a virtue or a vice is. It really is time for Catholics to stand up for moral, beautiful, soulful, and pure entertainment for our families. I've learned that age is not limiting - it's filled with wisdom and a unique work of its own. It's freeing, actually. My client, Beverly, has taught me a lot about this. If you've ever felt that you are too old to begin learning how to spiritually fast, I'd like to challenge you to consider that it is just a thought and one that is not true. This is an interview with one of my star clients, Dr. Beverly McMillan who has been through the Delay and Pray™ group coaching program and in the Keep Fasting Alumni community since January 2023. She is 81 years young and has lost over 20 lbs since beginning the program. Losing this weight has been helpful to her knees as she prepares to hike the Camino de Santiago this Fall with her three sons. Beverly shares her faith journey with us, including her reversion back to the Catholic Church. At The Catholic Fasting Coach, we always fast for freedom over the summer and schedule small fasts over the week of 4th of July in honor of freedom for our country. Don't let that scare you. This is a week of celebration, but moderation in eating and drinking can be practiced over any holiday with joy. There is no wagon when Jesus Christ is involved. The Holy Spirit recently led me to think of the Liberty Bell. It has a crack in it if you recall. We must ring the bell of prayer and fasting to keep our liberty and do it with a heavenly perspective. When you are hungry and praying - expect miracles to happen . I read a book a long time ago called Think and Eat Yourself Smart by Dr. Caroline Leaf . She has an interesting explanation of hunger that I have always considered relevant. Our minds and our gut are integrated acutely - says Dr. Leaf. For example, our feelings such as happiness, joy, pleasure, anger, anxiety, sadness, and bitterness can trigger physical reactions in our digestive systems. Dr. Leaf points to a gut-brain link that proves that biology, neurology, and theology are all integrated within us and why it is so important to make sure we implant the word of God which is living and true, into our minds so that it affects every part of our body positively. Gain insights on the gut-brain link, emotional eating, and the transformative impact of integrating scripture into our thoughts. My favorite scriptures in the Bible are about possibility, and that nothing is impossible with God . Do you make decisions from a place of POSSIBILITY or from a place of lack, doubt and scarcity? The mindset of possibility comes from a mindset of love and abundance, especially beginning with Christ. Today, I want to introduce you to Kelly Shoup. She is a child behavior specialist, a pediatric occupational therapist, and a certified Catholic mindset coach who possesses tenacity, deep spirituality, and a mindset of possibility . For the past 25 years, she has been helping parents go from chaos, conflict, and out-of-control feelings with their kids to harmony in their homes and better connections with their families that will last a lifetime. Kelly joined the Delay and Pray™ program because she had always been health-focused, but had never considered pairing spiritual fasting with the health aspects. As we enter the new liturgical year, it's time to prepare ourselves for a spiritually fulfilling Advent season. In this episode, Beth shares her insights on embracing the joy of this season, while also emphasizing the importance of spiritual and physical preparation. “I imagine my body as a spacious stable open to the dwelling of the infant King as opposed to all the Inns of Bethlehem that had no room for him” - Beth Beth beautifully expresses her love for this time of year and highlights the significance of Advent as a season of family, longing, and joyful expectation for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. She talks about the importance of making room in our hearts and physically in our bodies for Him, much like the humble and beautiful Holy Family made room for Jesus in a simple stable. Have you ever considered the correlation between a woman's menstrual cycle and the Eat Fast Feast cycle? This week, I have Jane Snyder (aka Mama Jane) back on the podcast, except this time she is interviewing me! One of the questions she asks me is ' How do we feast well, without overindulging ? ' Mama Jane is a trained NFP Billings Instructor, certified Metanoia Catholic mindset coach, and host of the weekly podcast 'Cycles and Sanctity'. “It's a slow trajectory to sainthood. It's a slow trajectory to whole foods, a slow trajectory to learning about your cycle. You're not going to learn this overnight . ” - Beth Bubik In this episode, Jane goes into detail about a woman's cycle and shares some rules of the Billings Method. She provides insights into connecting our spiritual life with our cycles. I shared how the Delay & Pray program works along with intermittent fasting and we explored the fascinating parallels between the Eat Fast Feast cycle and women's menstrual cycles. We talk about our experiences of learning new things, the law of gradualism, and the importance of engaging in various activities that keep our minds occupied on positive goals and away from unhealthy habits. You can expect to gain valuable insights from this conversation and walk away with a renewed sense of gratitude for your mind, body, and soul, and the virtues you can acquire through delayed gratification. In this 50th episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast, Beth shares her interview by Megan Graupmann of the Fiat Institute. This institute is an education program for hormone coaches and they invited her to share the Catholic approach to intermittent fasting. “It is always better to focus on improving BOTH your body and soul rather than the race to be a certain size. Getting healthy in body and soul is so important to becoming a Saint — let’s do it together!” - Beth Bubik Beth shares how she came to be the Catholic Fasting Coach and her struggles with sugar and alcohol consumption, emphasizing the power of coaching and turning to God for support. Beth and Megan discuss the impact of hormones on managing both the mind and body, including the significance of self-awareness and the role of nutrition in navigating life's different stages, such as postpartum and menopause. They shed light on why women crave carbs during certain stages of the menstrual cycle and why the quality of our food and homemade options are important. Beth shares examples of how we can challenge unhelpful thoughts and replace them with thoughts that lead us to invite God into our struggles and find freedom from the dieting mentality. She includes a list of better-quality activities to replace cheap dopamine and help us find a balance between pleasure and discipline. If you are tired of dieting and ready to ditch the diet mentality, you will want to listen to this episode. Father Richard Conlin's book " 9 Days to Corpus Christi " is the first-ever consecration program to Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is around the corner, so Fr. Conlin joined me to share insights from his devotion to the Eucharistic Jesus and much more. We discuss his awesome book and how our lives are a continual seeking of Jesus in the Sacraments. His book has stories that will touch your heart and help you fast . I found it so compelling, that I plan to read it every year as I consecrate myself to Jesus at this very time in the Church Calendar. I think you will be amused as we talk about my favorite story in the book involving the Road Runner cartoon and a playful game of hide and seek with his nieces. He says this is how Jesus works. We talk about eating, fasting, feasting, and the actual playfulness of it all, with the High Feast being the Blessed Sacrament on Sundays. Forming a set of virtuous patterns to adhere to is often just the ticket to a life of freedom where obedience to the more virtuous things is a better choice than taking action from what I am feeling at the moment. This is best done out of obedience and for love of the other. Love of the other is the absolute key here. In part two of this topic, I emphasize the importance of leading with love, obedience over passion, and consecration to Mary, St. Joseph, and the Eucharistic Jesus. I speak about the trending quick weight loss methods and advocate for a mindset shift towards food freedom through spiritual development and coaching. Creating a Rule of Life around Spiritual Fasting is from ancient Catholic Tradition and has been around forever. As humans, we love patterns and were created to strive for good virtuous habits. Do you take the time to really ask yourself: “ How am I going to live my life this week or this day?” If you do, good for you! That’s a win. If not, I can help you because this is where freedom lies. A Rule of Life is very similar with a little virtuous thought thrown in. If used correctly it will shine a light on God‘s will for you and your mission given from Him. I use it from morning until night— and it is why my delay and pray efforts are so successful — both personally and as a business. It's a way to shift from the Vice Cycle to the Virtue Cycle — from the over-desire of food and alcohol to the holy desire of the one True Food — Jesus Christ. In part one of this topic, I share what is needed for a good regimen within a rule of life, with tips from our favorite exorcist, Fr. Ripperger. My book coach, Nika Maples didn't just help me write and publish my first book, but also took my course and group coaching experience, Delay and Pray™, and got phenomenal results! She has lost 50 pounds since starting the Delay and Pray™ program last July. She has an incredible and inspiring story, and I am certain you will relate to her thoughts about sugar and losing weight at her age. Nika is not Catholic, but as a Protestant, she is on fire for God, and we share similar values and love for Jesus. We discuss the power of perseverance amid challenges, when it comes to writing a book and losing weight, or any other project you may have, and how we can do hard things through the power of the Holy Spirit. One of the powerful breakthroughs that Nika had during the course was: Food is not my celebration, and food is not my motivation. I encourage you to listen to this episode if you have thoughts or questions like: What results can I get from the Delay and Pray™ Group Coaching Experience? Why do I need coaching to lose weight, grow closer to God, or achieve a goal? Do I need to be Catholic to go through the Delay and Pray™ program and get results? We share our collaboration experiences, and how, even as coaches, we need coaching in other areas of our lives that are not our areas of expertise. We explore themes of obedience, trust in God's providence, and the commitment and dedication required for successful coaching and achieving our goals for the glory of God. Friends, my book launched this week! " Delay and Pray™: Permanent Weight Loss through Spiritual Fasting " is available for purchase on Amazon. Publishing a book is not for the faint of heart, and it is a difficult challenge, but I did it, and I cannot believe it! The Blessed Mother called me into this mission a long time ago, and it has taken me so long to answer the call to Spiritual Fasting. The book itself is an inspirational summary of my online course, and a companion piece to this podcast, all three by the same name, Delay and Pray™. There is a lot of Holy Spirit involved in this, and I've had a lot of people helping me with this. It has evolved into what I hope to be a movement. The Spiritual Fasting Movement , through Delay and Pray™. In today's episode, I share some thoughts on my book launch, including speeches that my husband and I gave at the book launch party. My husband's speech was a beautiful introduction to me and such a heartfelt love note to me that I appreciated so much. Have you ordered your book yet? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts so far, and would very much appreciate a review on Amazon this week. Thank you! Happy Easter! Hallelujah! Lent is over and the Easter season has arrived! This was seriously the busiest, but most joyful Lent for me. I had a perfectly imperfect Lent, filled with a little hunger, making some extra physical space for the Holy Spirit to do His work. And He did it. Be assured of this - even if you didn't do everything perfectly. Perfect doesn't matter with Christ. Intention counts - especially if you are out of your normal pattern. And then Easter comes - so we feast in celebration of the Lord's resurrection to new life. I am feasting on lots of things other than food this Easter Octave! I am feasting this year on the fact that my book is done and will be on sale this month ! How exciting is that? Can you feast on something other than food? You bet! The Feast of the Annunciation was moved to Monday, April 8th this year. This is a Divine appointment that the Feast of the Annunciation had to be moved to the date of the Total Eclipse of the Sun and my consecration date to Jesus, through Mary. Oh my! I am in awe of this. In this episode, I recount my experience of Lent including my preparation for Marian consecration, and share all the ways I will be feasting this Easter season, and how you can feast and celebrate too. Spiritual Fasting has absolutely changed my life for the better and I want to pass on to you five of the amazing categories of benefits today. Jesus intermittently fasted, Mary fasted, and the Jewish people before Jesus fasted. They had particular fasting days and were perfectly capable of going long periods without food. They ate sparingly, the food was basic and healthy and there was not an abundance of it. Fasting was expected in most religious cultures in the past. The secular culture of today calls it Intermittent Fasting but paired with a meaningful spiritual purpose, we call it Catholic Fasting or Spiritual Fasting now. Most people don't do it today because of a lack of knowledge and they think it requires being wildly hungry and withstanding huge amounts of discomfort. This is untrue. As scripture says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge" - Hosea 4:6 Spiritual Fasting is amazing for you and when done correctly it requires being only mildly hungry and withstanding mild discomfort once in a while both resulting in HUGE benefits for you and those that you love. With the Delay and Pray method - we concentrate on Metabolic Flexibility using a very effective rhythm of the week called the Eat Fast Feast Cycle. In this episode, we uncover the life-changing effects of spiritual fasting and learn how to integrate it as a lifestyle for optimal health and spiritual growth. It's time to wrap up our 3-part series with Fr. Logan Parrish on our discussion on the quote from St. Peter Chrysologus, as we unpack the final part of the quote -- Mercy! Prayer knocks, fasting obtains, mercy receives. We pray, and then we add fasting, which increases the power of the prayer, and then we blast that prayer up to heaven by adding mercy to the mix. But whose mercy are we talking about? My mercy? God’s mercy? Or is this another “Both-and” that Fr. Logan likes to discuss? I bet you can guess the answer to that one. He shares how St. Peter emphasizes mercy as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy . Fr. Logan also shares some beautiful insights about the Triduum , as we enter into Holy Week in a few days. This week, we are back with Fr. Logan Parrish for part 2 of our 3-part series to continue our discussion on the second part of the quote from St. Peter Chrysologus -- Fasting! Prayer knocks, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Fasting with Prayer is a miraculous combination. Fasting without prayer is wasteful in my book. In this episode, Fr. Logan shares why fasting obtains miracles . He talks about how we are created - that we are bodily beings and what we consume matters. He also shares insightful analogies and reminds us that we are not made for comfort. We are more like cacti! Tune in to the episode to understand what he means by that. I am very excited about the next series of podcasts that I am recording with one of my favorite priests, Fr. Logan Parrish. We are going to discuss this amazing quote: Prayer knocks, fasting obtains, mercy receives. -- St. Peter Chrysologus This will be a three-part series as we divide it into three natural parts -- beginning today with Prayer and how it is literally our survival kit for life! Next week we continue with how Fasting obtains and we then round out the third week with a fascinating discussion on receiving Mercy. We explore the significance of prayer, confident expectation, survival through prayer, and the importance of physical presence in the church and fellowship in the community. Have you read the book The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy? Although I read it a long time ago during my Life Coach Schooling, the Holy Spirit worked through family members and clients on three separate occasions recently to ask me if I'd read it. I took it as an invitation to re-read it and create a comparison to see what the Holy Spirit was prompting me to find. In one column, I wrote what the book had to offer me in Gap/Gain language , and in the next column, I re-wrote that information in what I am now calling the Holy Spirit language . And wow, did I learn a lot! When we read books, depending on our individual experiences and what we are seeking from the work, we typically pull out lessons that we can apply to our present circumstances and help us in our daily goals. "I remember all the highs and lows that got me to where I'm at, and I sit here humbled and amazed by the life God has given me." - Dr. Benjamin Hardy I'd love to hear your thoughts after you listen. If you've read the book previously or read it after listening to this episode, I'd love to know what the Holy Spirit prompts you to find. Have you ever considered how fasting prepares our hearts to receive God's grace? And how, by disciplining our bodies, we can weaken sinful tendencies and open ourselves to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit? Through spiritual fasting, I have discovered true hunger - the body and blood of Jesus Christ . I had no idea I was stuffing myself with sugar, flour, and alcohol, instead of going to Him in prayer and sacraments. I was seeking comfort from the world - not the actual True Food that would satisfy me. I learned that comfort food and drink will never satisfy me. Mary, the Mother of God, points us to her Son as the True Food and True Drink . This mystery is the center of our faith as Catholics. We tend to focus so much on earthly food - that we need! We do meal prep and focus on what we can and should eat according to the day. But do we do spiritual meal prep ? That is what I was missing all along. This is because I have been listening to his Podcast, The Mystical City of God Podcast in a Year . The podcast recounts the amazing book with the same title: The Mystical City of God . This book literally changed my life and motivated me on a deeply spiritual level to fast for the intentions of the Blessed Mother and love her deeply. If you want to know more about this book, you can listen to episode #18, where I discuss the book with my dear friend, Michelle Dunne. We also did a book discussion series for almost an entire year that is hosted within my Delay and Pray™ Group Coaching Experience for your self-paced viewing. He shares what drew him to The Mystical City of God and to create the corresponding podcast in a year. We discussed a little bit about the book and shared our favorite parts of it. I got to ask Fr. In today’s episode, Beth is interviewing Sam Kelley, an international presenter, author, and speaker, and the founder and president of Fierce Athlete Incorporated. “Our bodies are more sacred, holy, beautiful than the rest of creation, which is hard for us to internalize…It's hard for us to live out of that truth and place of freedom.” -Sam Kelley Through her business, she integrates highly-competitive athleticism with Theology of the Body, primarily in the highschool and college athletic arenas. Throughout their conversation, Beth and Sam explore the body-soul composite, suggesting that in order to have a physically healthy life, you need to have a great spiritual life, and vice versa! Have you ever thought of a workout as a Holy Hour? Sam shares the motivation she receives when she dedicates her workouts to suffering and praying for specific intentions, and uniting her experiences with Christ’s passion. She also shares how community sports like pickleball can be a great way to love on your community, and even to evangelize!. In today’s episode, Beth is sharing the counterintuitive idea that exercise can actually make fasting easier ! “Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win.” (1 Cor 9:24) She describes the personal benefits she has experienced from exercising throughout her day, and shares multiple resources detailing the positive effect of exercise on our bodies, minds, and souls. But for those who associate the word “exercise” with dieting, Beth has a suggestion: replace it with the word “movement!” Beth shares research from Harvard Medical School about the detrimental effects that sitting for too long can have on our bodies, ranging from lower back pain to Type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, she shares the positive effects that exercise can have on our brains (improving our moods and increasing positive neurotransmitters) and on our fasting bodies (upregulating fat-burning and increasing compounds essential for muscle growth). Beth encourages all of us to find ways to make our workouts fun - think pickleball with friends! - to help escalate the wellness of our bodies, minds, and souls. With this in mind, she shares stories proving that communal exercise such as sports and dancing can help eliminate social anxiety and improve learning. Working out while fasting isn’t just about losing weight - it can create a domino effect of positive results for yourself, your community, and ultimately, your world. On this special episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast, Beth is sharing the ‘main course’ of her Hungry for God Virtual Dinner Party : an interview with Sr. Dede Byrne. “It’s before the Blessed Sacrament that I found the love of Jesus, and the power of that love.” -Monsignor Francesco Maria Greco This inspiring woman is the Mother Superior of the Community of the Little Workers of the Sacred Heart, a surgeon, and a retired US Army colonel. Throughout her various callings, Sr. Dede has maintained a deep devotion to the Eucharist and the sanctity of human life. Her experiences show us that when God calls us, He doesn’t just want certain parts of us - He wants all of us. Raised in a home devoted to the Eucharist, Sr. Dede describes Christ as the “main course” of our lives, and shares moments when an interaction with the Eucharist was quickly followed by unexpected blessings. She suggests that Perpetual Adoration is where you receive your “to-do list” from God, and calls the Mass and Adoration the “twin lights” of the Eucharist. Declaring herself “not just pro-life, but pro-eternal-life,” she is also deeply passionate about the sanctity of human life - she spoke on it at the Republican National Convention, and is actively involved in bringing awareness to the crime of euthanasia and the power of a holy, natural death. On this special episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast, Beth is sharing the ‘salad course’ of her recent Hungry for God Virtual Dinner Party. “You can do hard, and you don’t have to do hard full throttle at the beginning.”– Lisa Canning This was an interview with Lisa Canning (The Possibility Mom), and Erin Ingold (co-founder of Metanoia Catholic). In this discussion, Beth, Lisa, and Erin are covering everything about fasting: from thought work, to redemptive suffering, to failing forward. Whatever your circumstances may be right now, these women have tools that can help you move forward with God. Do you ever find yourself coping with life by pouring a glass of wine? Lisa has some amazing words of wisdom on this scenario, and Beth and Erin join her in exploring how your intellect can inform your will and help you choose the greater good. Beth and Erin also share the power of suffering redemptively, and Erin encourages all listeners to find their unique, God-given way to fast for others. And finally, Lisa poses a powerful question: “What’s the alternative?” You can be frustrated that fasting is hard and wallow in your failures, or you can choose the alternative - to find your motivations, be merciful towards your failings, and try again with God’s help. As Beth and Lisa say: Hold your results with loose hands. Offer your desires to God. Trust His process. And detach from the result. You can do hard things! On this special episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast, Beth is sharing the ‘hors d’oeuvres’ of her recent Hungry for God Virtual Dinner Party : an interview with Jay Richards, author of Eat, Fast, Feast: Heal Your Body While Feeding Your Soul . “I would like to just suggest the possibility that the perfect fast of bread and water is actually referring to the Eucharist and Baptism.”– Jay Richards In this episode, Jay shares how an impending medical procedure helped him to discover the metabolic power of fasting, and how this discovery led him into a rediscovery of fasting from a Christian perspective. With this information, he was able to use science, theology, and history to create a method for the modern-day American to reach metabolic flexibility while growing closer to God. Beth and Jay discuss the Eat Fast Feast cycle, and how it honors the ancient liturgical calendar. They point out that our current American diet makes it very difficult to fast easily, and that our cultural mindsets are keeping us from reaching metabolic flexibility. They also address topics such as snacking, reverse-engineering your fasting for special occasions, and the difference between feasting and overeating. They emphasize the ways that fasting recognizes and honors our body-soul composite, and finally, they remind us that no matter what is happening in our lives and the lives of our loved ones, we can always tackle it with the power of prayer and fasting. In today’s episode, Beth is encouraging her listeners to get hungry for God by diving into Spiritual Fasting. “Fasting is a basic physiological need and above all an ancient spiritual practice.”– Beth Bubik She explains the three parts of successful Catholic Fasting, and the two types of fuel our bodies burn to give us energy. She also shares the fasting practices of the ancient Church, explaining the metabolic flexibility that occurs while following the lifestyle practiced by the early Christians. And finally, she’s reminding her listeners of the power of the Sacraments, and encouraging them to “Begin again with gentle repentance” and give themselves fully to God. Beth begins by admitting that Spiritual Fasting is not for the faint of heart, but with the three tools of the Eat Fast Feast Cycle, mindset work, and the Sacraments, it can create miracles in your life. She explains that our bodies burn two types of fuel - sugar and fat - and explains the science behind each. She shares the benefits of being in ‘ketosis,’ and encourages her listeners to reach ‘Catholic metabolic flexibility’ by eating, fasting, and feasting with a spiritual purpose according to the Church year. Beth goes on to share that the ancient Church fasted most of the time, creating an optimal experience of health for the early Christians. She compares the experience of fasting to Christ’s words at the Last Supper, suggesting that fasting gives us the opportunity to offer our bodies as a sacrifice for others. The reason diets don’t work is because they are me-centered and involve persistent calorie restrictions that make us hungry. Catholic fasting involves a healthier metabolic approach while enjoying wholesome foods and offering up any suffering for the sake of others. And remember: God loves you infinitely. As Beth says, “Shift from desperation to confidence in God and you will see miracles in your body, your life, and in the world.” Give yourself fully to God in Spiritual Fasting - you won’t be disappointed. In today’s episode, Beth is using the classic kids’ game, Chutes and Ladders, to illustrate our journey to Heaven, with all of its chutes of disappointment and ladders of virtue. “Beware of the thief on the street that will steal your purse and beware of the thief in your mind that will steal your promise!” - Jim Rohn She explains how to discipline disappointment, and encourages you to dive into fasting and your Catholic community in order to reach your goals. Discipline your disappointment by choosing to get back up and try again after a chute experience, and by avoiding negative self-talk. Beth uses her book club and St. Michael’s Lent to illustrate the importance of a strong Catholic community that will help you up at the bottom of chutes and support you back up the ladders. She also shares a quote by Jim Rohn, suggesting that we should guard our thoughts from the thief of joy as carefully as we guard our homes from normal thieves: in other words, avoid negative self-talk that will keep you crying at the bottom of the chute, instead of looking for the next ladder. Life is full of chutes. You get to decide if you want to ride down them and give up, or if you want to stand up and find the ladders God has scattered near you. Imagine the future goal you are trying to accomplish. Feel it. Live in it. And go look for your next ladder. As Beth says, “Being a saint is the real Chutes and Ladders game, and Catholic fasting will surely get you there!” Help Beth reach her goal of bringing 1 Million Catholics back to the Church: Please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review! Did you know that a few glasses of wine before bed can throw off your sleep schedule for days? In today’s episode, Beth is explaining the science behind alcohol’s effect on the human brain. “With good sleep, everything is better.” - Beth Bubik The glass of wine that you ‘need’ to relax in the evenings isn’t helping you relax - it’s actually stimulating your fight-or-flight response, shutting down the regenerative process of your brain, and ruining your sleep. Luckily, Beth has a few tips for improving the quality of your sleep, and it starts with fasting from alcohol in the evenings. She’s also sharing ways to create a quality sleep environment in your bedroom, and a bedtime routine that will optimize your sleep experience. And of course, she’s giving you fair warning of the habits that are most likely to damage or even completely ruin your chances of rejuvenating rest. Beth reminds us that good habits beget good habits: for example, quality sleep will lead to quality days! The reverse is also true: a few drinks or some caffeine before bed will rob you of good sleep, which will in turn rob you of your best life tomorrow. Anyone else feeling tired? Today, Beth is talking about how sleep-deprivation can inhibit your ability to achieve the vibrant life you desire. “Sleep is as important as exercise and nutrition.” - Beth Bubik She explains different sleep rhythms, describes what good sleep actually looks like, shares scientific explanations of what sleep (and the lack thereof) does to your brain and body, and suggests various ways to optimize your sleep in order to live a more fruitful life. Did you know that you may be genetically predisposed to stay up later or get up earlier than other people? Beth encourages everyone to discover their natural sleep rhythm, and make a plan to honor it. She also shares how just a few more hours of sleep could affect your weightloss journey, and how sleep-deprivation can awaken the primitive brain’s desire for fast-acting carbs, rather than healthy foods. And for any new parents out there: Beth understands that sleep may not always be easily accessible. Even with that, she encourages everyone to keep this information handy, and create a lifestyle that promotes sleep as much as possible. Maybe that’s reading Scripture before bed, instead of binging Netflix. Maybe it’s avoiding excessive caffeine intake, or journaling to work through your stress. Or maybe it’s simply honoring your natural circadian rhythms: eating when it’s daylight, and sleeping when it’s dark. Making changes in your sleep schedule can be challenging. If you’re feeling discouraged, try Beth’s new motto: “Wrestle. Pray. Trust. And then Repeat.” Three steps forward and two steps back still results in a trajectory towards sainthood: you just have to be willing to get back up and try again. Friday night happy hour? Count Beth… out ! In today’s episode, she’s challenging the idea that Friday night fun begins with a drink. “Alcohol is small and irrelevant in my life.” - Annie Grace, This Naked Mind Thought shifts, scientific proof, and her own personal testimony combine into a provocative episode that boils down to answering one simple question: “Do you really need to drink to have fun?” Beth shares a recent story about a family weekend when she was tempted to have a drink, and the thoughts and motivations that kept her strong in spite of that desire. She gives a few excellent examples of motivating thought shifts and even shares a deliverance prayer that she has found helpful in the face of temptation. Using her own struggles as an example, Beth reassures her listeners that giving up alcohol does get easier and more rewarding: she hasn’t had a drink on Friday night throughout 2023! And if, after all that, you’re still reaching for a glass of wine, Beth shares some pretty fascinating scientific facts about the cyclical havoc that alcohol can raise in your brain, and the destructive power of your own habitual thoughts about alcohol. You don’t need to be stuck in these cycles: using the delay-and-pray protocol, you can break these patterns and begin a fun, rewarding life without needing alcohol. You just have to be willing to question your own mind the next time it says, “I need a drink.” Help Beth reach her goal of bringing 1 Million Catholics back to the Church: Please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review! What is the easiest way to do hard things? In today’s episode, Beth is answering that question with insights from multiple great saints, theologians, and her own mindset coach. “Our thoughts determine our lives.” - Elder Thaddeus If you think the pursuit of virtue is difficult, you’re right! But maybe it doesn’t have to be quite as difficult as you think it is. Beth is explaining a two-tiered approach to creating lasting, virtuous change in your life. The first tier is self-knowledge, and the second tier is Divine Grace, through the Sacraments. She cites great thinkers like St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Paul, Elder Thaddeus, and Fulton Sheen, to explain that your interior life dictates the results of your external life. If you want to experience real change in your life, the first step is to start noticing your thoughts and taking them to God. She also addresses the way that the material world can affect our interior life. How often do we allow the culture’s ideas of fun to creep in and fill us with FOMO if we choose to live a countercultural life through prayer and fasting? Beth counters this by describing the “smells and bells” of the Mass as an example of the lovely ways that God reaches us through our senses, and she shares her personal relationships with nuns and priests to exemplify how fun holiness can truly be. Furthermore, she quotes Fulton Sheen, who explains that the Sacraments are the spiritual manifestation of our physical lives. Internally and externally, God is constantly offering us the truths and graces we need to shift us into a life of abundance and love. So… What do you need to be thinking to create lasting spiritual, mental, and physical changes in your life? Your results all begin in your thoughts!! What if it’s not you… What if it’s your hormones? In today’s episode, Beth is continuing her two-part series, “Stop the Overeating,” and de-escalating the emotional pressure of your weight loss journey with a simple, biological fact: your hormones aren’t playing nicely together. “Trade your cheap desire for sugary foods and alcohol for the true desires that God has written on your heart.” - Beth Bubik Tackling both the mental strain of indulgent thoughts and the hormonal imbalances triggered by our stressed, exhausted lifestyles, Beth is offering simple, straightforward suggestions to win the weight loss battle once and for all. She begins by discussing ‘indulgent’ thoughts and ‘opportunity’ thoughts, replacing “This isn’t working” with “This just might work!” She also explains the effect that the three hunger hormones - insulin, leptin, and ghrelin - have on your weight loss journey. Insulin is a fat storage hormone, and an excess of insulin contributes to diabetes and weight gain. Leptin is the hormone that tells us when we’re full and need to exercise, but insulin blocks that receptor to our brains. Ghrelin tells us when we’re hungry and need to find food, but insulin causes ghrelin to escalate, creating even more desire for food. In order to get all of these hormones balanced, Beth is offering a simple, effective plan to her listeners, including food choices, sleep recommendations, and tips for controlling the stress responses that make us reach for cookies when we really ought to reach for a pillow. Finally, Beth gently affirms that the first few weeks are the hardest, but they will result in a deeper awareness of your interior life. From that space, call out to the Lord to shine a light on the true desires of your heart that have gotten buried under the sweets and processed foods. This is the path to permanent healing. What if the best way to stop overeating and to start enjoying the best days of your life had literally nothing to do with food itself? “Take the pressure off yourself. This is not a diet. It is a spiritual lifestyle.” - Beth Bubik In this episode, Beth is exploring practical ways to overcome common food struggles, but more importantly, she’s tackling the interior thoughts and desires that create the chaos that ultimately lead to overeating. If you have struggled with diets in the past and you’re frustrated by the numbers on the scale, you don’t want to miss this episode! Beth begins by defining overeating, and challenging the diet mentality. By shifting our focus from deprivation to experimentation, Beth unearths a new way to view the impact that food has on both our bodies and our minds. She even debunks some myths about foods that have been wrongly labeled “unhealthy,” while simultaneously explaining why no foods should be eaten with reckless abandon. Have you heard of the motivational triad? “Seeking pleasure, avoiding pain, and reducing effort” is a default setting in the human brain, but it can have catastrophic results on the mind and body when we allow it to influence our food choices. To undo the damage done by these brain habits or “neural pathways,” Beth suggests identifying the scenarios that lead to overeating, and making a plan to address them in the future. The same repetitive process that created the unconscious bad habits can be used to create unconscious virtuous habits! And finally, if you’re struggling, Beth suggests praying for the virtue of longanimity: the willingness to wait for the good. Welcome to Part 2 of Metabolic Flexibility for God! In today’s episode, Beth uses the parable of the Sower and the Seed to explain the Delay and Pray Spiritual Fasting Course. “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12 She introduces her listeners to the desired results (the ‘seeds’) of spiritual fasting, and uses the parable to illustrate four different ways that our brains pursue those results. Do you stop before you start? Cave to perfectionism? Buffer with other foods and entertainment? Or fail your way to success? Addressing these four tendencies, Beth uses beautiful, Biblical symbolism to illustrate this epic journey into spiritual fasting. She’s also sharing purely practical information, by offering you a list of pantry staples, recipes, and even a 7 Day Meal Plan to help you become metabolically flexible for God. The fourth of July was last week, and the feasting and parties were glorious! But how many of us are worried about returning to “normal” life now that the feasting is over? “I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need.” (Phillippians 4:12) On today’s episode, Beth is introducing her listeners to the concept of metabolic flexibility , a skill that can help you feast joyfully without losing your ability to return to the eat/fast/feast cycle as soon as the holiday ends. To achieve this kind of freedom, she offers five suggestions for achieving and maintaining metabolic flexibility even during celebratory seasons throughout the year. Beth shares a few minimum baseline plans for staying on target spiritually and physically during holiday weeks, even while the sugar consumption goes up. She also shares a few of the devastating side-effects that over-consumption of sugar/flour/alcohol have on the body, mind and soul. With this in mind, she taps into the science of glucose and ketones, and explains how the eat/fast/feast cycle leads to a metabolic flexibility that processes carbs and fats more efficiently. Finally, she shares her personal testimony of the life-changing daily affects that the eat/fast/feast cycle has had on her, both physically and spiritually. The goal is resilience.” - Jessica Castillo Her mission is to help Catholic women thrive in every aspect of their lives, body, mind, and soul, so that they have the energy, the strength, and the focus to do the important work that God has created them to do. In this episode, Beth and Jessica are discussing the connection between physical and spiritual health, and how better health leads to increased capacity for mission. Jessica begins by describing her childhood pursuit of health in a stressful home environment, creating an exercise routine with the help of water bottles and library books, and teaching herself to pray, inspired by movies and a Gideon Bible. A difficult diagnosis for her mother, a combat deployment to Iraq, and dating her Catholic husband ultimately led her to RCIA and Catholicism. Jessica began making connections between food, exercise, and prayer, and how vital all three were to showing up as her best possible self. Finally, she shares her journey into motherhood, and how a bout with depression brought her into a deeper understanding of who she is and what she needs to thrive. Listen as Beth and Jessica discuss how to find meaning in life, and the importance of intentional, holy routines. They also discuss the mission God has in store for each one of us, and how it does not include fitting into a preconceived mold. They challenge us all to see food and exercise as choices totally within our control, and encourage us to simply decide on a plan and then act: don't stay in decision-mode. In today’s episode, Beth shares how a desperate desire for change brought spiritual fasting into her life. “Grace is not cheap, my friends.” - Archbishop Fulton Sheen Are you desperate to lose weight, to bring your spouse/children back to Church, or to heal our nation? Maybe that desperation is the final push you need to finally unite your sufferings with Christ, embrace spiritual fasting, and watch your life change miraculously before your eyes. Beth is reminding her listeners that we are an indulgent nation, and that what we really need is to cry out to the Lord and allow Him to push us off the high dive of our indulgence and into the pool of His mercy. She challenges our definition of the word fun, suggesting that it isn’t really “fun” to overeat to the point of having a painful sugar crash, or to drink to the point of a hangover. She describes the effects of food addictions, and offers a straightforward path towards a life of freedom. You have to want it. You have to pray for it. She also shares the witness of several powerful women, both in heaven and on this side of eternity, and reminds her listeners that women are strong, and through prayer and spiritual fasting, they can change themselves and the world. Today, Beth is talking about pursuing your dreams, and she starts by sharing some good news about one of hers: the first draft of her book on spiritual fasting is complete! “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” - Psalms 139:14 With the help of an amazing coach, Nika Maples, Beth was able to overcome her unhelpful thoughts and find the determination to complete the hardest part of this dream project. Today, Beth is sharing the vital steps you need to take to achieve the dreams God has placed on your heart. First, Beth talks about the importance of thinking thoughts that are fueled by the feeling of determination. She explains the power of your mind, and how important it is to look at your thoughts objectively to see which are serving you, and which are not. She shares the impact that Nika Maples’ reel on determination had on her own determination, and also explains a technique involving a chair that Nika shared with her to help her continue on her road to authorhood. Finally, Beth talks about how the tactics she learned in writing her book are the same needed for pursuing weight loss and spiritual growth through fasting. She talks about the way diet mentality can creep into your mind, and how important it is to shift back into divine awareness. She discusses strategically conquering your mental battlefield, suggesting that prayers are healthy and abundant thoughts. But she warns that, left unchecked, your negative thoughts can harm you and others, producing a reality contrary to your dreams. Beth also brings out that famous buzz-word, self-care, and suggests that true self-care is not so much manicures and massages as it is managing our minds. In this episode, Beth is talking about the theme for the latest Delay and Pray Group Coaching experience: Fasting for Father. “If you are going to successfully spiritually fast, you will need a ‘why that makes you cry.’” - Beth Bubik For twelve weeks, Beth and her clients are fasting for every version of “father”: clergy, husbands, and men as a whole. Today, Beth is particularly talking about the importance of fasting for our husbands, and how it can change them - and us - for the better. Beth describes her marriage to her own husband, and shares the incredible fruits she has seen in their relationship since she began fasting for him three years ago. She explains that in spiritual fasting, it is deeply motivating to have two goals: a weight loss goal, and a spiritual goal. Let your husband be that spiritual goal: “the why that makes you cry.” She encourages us to join her in fasting, praying, and frequenting the sacraments with and for our husbands. As time goes by, you will see your weight drop, your marriage soar, and your dreams come to life. After all, God will not be outdone in generosity. Happy Easter! We have officially entered into the Easter Octave, and Beth is encouraging all of her listeners to stop delaying and to enter fully into this time of feasting. But wait! She said feasting : Not binging. What’s the difference? You’re about to find out. “Try redefining Feasting for yourself. Your life will change immensely.” - Beth Bubik Beth begins this episode warmly applauding your Lenten journey, and reassuring you that God is pleased with all of your efforts, even if they weren’t “perfect.” She also discusses the deep significance of this Octave of feasting in the Church, and gives her listeners a better understanding of the complementarity of fasting and feasting. But what is feasting? Feasting is “to dwell with gratification or delight,” and “to eat sumptuously.” Doesn’t sound like drive-thru burgers, does it? Binging, on the other hand, is to “indulge in an activity, such as eating to excess.” It seems counterintuitive to eat to excess while feasting for Christ, doesn’t it? In order to guide your feasting, Beth suggests having a Feasting Plan. Consider going to Mass daily and Adoration frequently during the Octave Read the Acts of the Apostles Cook amazing meals that are appealing and satisfying, and eat to enough Plan fun activities with family and friends Enjoy the beauty of nature Look for the good, the true, and the beautiful Do some research into Church teachings And finally, be patient with yourself - learning to place God at the center of our feasting and fasting takes time. If you’d like a guide through this process, join Beth’s Delay and Pray Coaching Experience. Through this program, you won’t just learn to fast well: you’ll learn to feast more fully than you’ve ever feasted in your life. As we enter into Holy Week, Beth is suggesting a special intention for your fasting and prayers - namely, priests. “By virtue of the cross alone must the priest-apostle, with the lively faith of Saint Peter, let down his net into the troubled sea of this life, certain that sooner or later the divine Master will make him an instrument of salvation to many.” - Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli Beth begins the episode by meditating on the profound healing and hope that comes from pondering the love of a God Who underwent such a humiliating death to bring us closer to Him. She particularly dwells on St. Peter, suggesting that, in him, we can find a representation of our own relationship with the Lord, as well as a symbol of priests everywhere. She reminds us that priests are humans, called to mission, fighting to keep their gaze on the Lord, just as St. Peter frequently did in the Gospels. Beth shares her personal experiences of the priests she has in her own family, describing them as human beings who live for the glory of God, but also need friendship and prayers. In particular, she shares the inspiring story of her nephew, Fr. Jacob, who overcame his sugar addiction and became capable of fulfilling his heart’s desire to go on mission for the Lord through the graces of spiritual fasting. But not just his own spiritual fasting - His mother, grandmother, aunt, and others were also fasting for his healing. The power of fasting is profound! In light of this, Beth suggests two courses of action for you to incorporate for priests. First, consider offering up your Friday fasts/abstinences for them. Second, dedicate at least one hour a month of Eucharistic Adoration for priests. And if you want to learn more about fasting for priests, join the Delay and Pray Program! Fasting for priests can change the world. A Prayer for Priests Divine Savior Jesus Christ—thank you for the Eucharist and Priests who are inflamed with the fire of your love—seeking nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of our souls. Protect them, Lord. And, cover them with your Love. Saint Peter—pray for us. Holy Mother of God—intercede for your Priests and pray for us all. Amen. Today, Beth is talking about fasting our loved ones back to the Church, or into the Church for the first time. “The Catholic Church is hemorrhaging young people.” - Brandon Vogt In this episode Beth is discussing the statistical anomaly that we are facing with our young people in the Church today: namely, that 50% of young people are leaving the Church before the age of 23. She also touches on the topic of the older adults who have not returned to the Church since the pandemic began. This crisis in the Church concerns all of us, and Beth is talking today about the steps you can take, with the Lord’s grace, to turn the tide back in favor of Sacramental lives. Social and mainstream media, politics, music… we are constantly consuming information that works to erode our relationship with God. But there is an answer. The results of society’s influence can be reversed through Spiritual Fasting. In her own personal experience of coaching her Delay and Pray Program, Beth is watching her clients fast their children and husbands back into pews, and their grandchildren into baptism. Just as Christ was willing to suffer intensely on the Cross for the sake of all of us, these men and women are finding that the sacrifice of food and drink is well worth the reward of seeing their loved ones come fully back to the Lord. In his book, “Return,” Brandon Vogt lists seven ways that parents can help their children rediscover the Church, and emphasizes the need for a plan to go along with this goal. Today, Beth is helping you devise that plan. First, she outlines a simple prayer plan that you can begin implementing today, followed by a fasting plan for delaying sugar, flour and alcohol on specific days during the week. Finally, Beth is offering a few thoughts that you can practice thinking that will keep you leaning into peace and trust in the Lord, no matter what is happening with your loved ones. These steps won’t just save you and your children - they can save the world, too. In today’s episode, Beth is interviewing Michelle Dunne, a Catholic strengths and mindset coach who helps her clients claim their abilities so that they can focus on their unique contribution to their family and the world. Beth and Michelle are discussing “The Mystical City of God” by Venerable Mary of Agreda, a mystic who received private revelations about the life of the Blessed Mother. They also discuss the link between this book and the Delay and Pray program, and how Our Lady can propel you forward on your spiritual fasting journey. Beth and Michelle begin by discussing their personal impressions of the Blessed Mother, and how their devotions have shifted and deepened while reading The Mystical City of God. With her fierce obedience and her balanced temperament, Our Lady reveals the secrets to self-denial and emotional stability. Along with these deeper truths, the book also shares little nuggets of insight that fire the imagination around the home life of St. Joseph, his lovely Spouse, and their beautiful Child. Can you imagine being given 10,000 angels at birth? Beth and Michelle discuss Our Lady’s intercessory prowess, gifted to her because of her obedience. They also talk about the Sacraments - Do you know how many were actually founded on Holy Thursday? You might be surprised! A tunic that grew with the Christ Child, the timing of His first words… This book transports you back in time and gently lifts the curtain on the hidden lives of the members of the Holy Family. Today, Beth is talking about emotions: the truths, the myths, and everything in between. If you want to know how to create the emotions you really want, and how to deal with the emotions that you really don’t want, this is the episode for you. “A goal is not achieved by one Massive Action, but by one Thought Model at a time.” - Beth Bubik Beth begins with a review of the Thought Model, and how five simple letters can change your life. She also explains the science behind emotions, and why they can drive us so powerfully if we let them. Referencing St. Thomas Aquinas and Fr. Chad Ripperger, she explains the way our intellects work and how putting emotions through reason results in interior freedom. Did you know there are three types of emotions, but only one that Christ and His Blessed Mother utilize? Beth is also debunking three myths about emotions, and explaining why your feelings can resemble a beach ball. Using the example of a time when she spent thousands of dollars on a program that did not meet her expectations, Beth offers practical tips on dealing with your feelings in the moment, and preparing for similar emotional experiences in the future. In short, Beth is giving you back control over your own emotions - a control you might not have realized you could have. Almsgiving is the topic of this week's Delay and Pray podcast. Listen as Beth explains how almsgiving is greater and much more than something we just do during Lent. “Almsgiving is a form of Charity that helps us to get out of ourselves and give to others in creative and generous ways.” - Beth Bubik In today’s episode, Beth is talking about the last and least considered pillar of Lent: Almsgiving. The biggest takeaway? This isn't just about money. It’s about self-gift: serving others with your wealth, your time, and your God-given talents. Throughout this episode, Beth offers examples of unique ways to incorporate this pillar of Lent into your life. In one story, an ink cartridge becomes a chance to encounter the Lord through financial almsgiving. She also shares a beautiful memory of her father, who taught her the true meaning of almsgiving through his words and actions toward her grandfather. Even silently entering into a friend’s pain can be a form of almsgiving. This Lent, Beth is inviting you to allow yourself to be a gift to others. Don’t just write God a check and call it good. See how He might be calling you to give creatively with your time and your talents as well. And remember: He is the God who multiplies loaves and fishes. Whatever you give, He’ll give back more. If you are looking for happiness then consider spiritual fasting. Follow Beth in this episode as she explains how spiritual fasting can help you achieve goals of happiness and more. “If feeling our hunger can awaken our spiritual senses, never feeling hunger can dull them.” - Christopher West In today’s episode, Beth is discussing the second pillar of Lent: Spiritual Fasting. Through the redemptive suffering of spiritual fasting, we can win souls for the Lord and deepen our relationship with Christ… all while reaching our weight loss goals. Do you want to be rich, happy, and thin? Beth shares some interesting insights on that desire, and the indispensable role of spiritual fasting in achieving it. She also shares why dieting doesn’t work, and uses the example of a pregnant mother to emphasize the power of willingly delaying gratification for the good of someone else. During the season of Lent, prayer is a powerful and necessary part of the journey. Tune in to the episode to discover ways of using prayer during Lent. “Try shifting the mindset of the hinges of your day from breakfast, lunch, and dinner to morning, evening and night prayer… eventually you will find yourself eating at God’s table in the kingdom.” - Beth Bubik Lent has begun! Today, Beth is dedicating the episode to an in-depth look at the first of the three pillars of Lent: Prayer. Prayer is our “vital and personal relationship with the living and true God,” (CCC, no. 2558) and today Beth is going to suggest various ways to pursue this personal encounter with the Lord. She relates her own journey into a deeper prayer life, when her nephew, a client, and a book in a pew led her to discover the Liturgy of the Hours. She also shares a unique interpretation of the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, and how the mechanism of a door can be a symbol of your relationship with God. The desert of Lent is a journey that leads us closer to Christ. Beth opens up how her personal journey through Lent has helped shaped her own life. “Hide yourself in a love more penetrating than a brush fire, more overwhelming than a deluge.” - Fr. Patrick Reidy, C.S.C. The countdown to Lent begins! In this episode, Beth is preparing for the approaching Lenten season by giving her listeners a clear explanation of what Lent requires, as well as optional (but dynamic!) practices. She is discussing the requirements of fasting and abstinence, the redemptive power of uniting our personal sacrifices to the Lord’s sufferings, and the life-changing results that can come from allowing Christ to fill the desert within us. Beth shares her first experience of “going into the desert” during Lent 2020, and how fasting opened doors that seemed impenetrable. She also describes the immense power of Lent 2021, as she led her first Lent Course with Coaching, and began fasting for healing in her family relationships. The season of Lent can be an amazing and transformative experience. But we have to plan for it. With proper planning and spiritual preparation, Lent can be a time that we look forward to and embrace, instead of a time that we dread and want to avoid. “These forty days are just the beginning of a new you in body and soul.” - Beth Bubik In Episode 12 of the Delay and Pray Podcast, Beth is helping you prepare for the best Lent of your life. Transformation comes through Christ, but Beth encourages you to make a few plans to commit to this journey with Him. With insightful questions and personal testimonies, she’s offering three specific ways to plan for a transformative Lent. Get motivated before Lent Create a Lent calendar Start Spiritually Fasting Can weakness motivate you during Lent? Beth thinks so. She also discusses her personal experience in using a calendar during Lent, planning everything from Mass/Confession times to what books/movies she wants to enjoy. And in learning to delay sugar, flour, and alcohol, Beth has a pro-tip: delaying is hard - don’t make it harder during this learning process. Let your healthy options be well-seasoned and delicious . Journaling through The Model is key to Spiritual Fasting. Today I've invited one of my most successful clients onto to the podcast to tell us how she does it quickly while commuting on the train to work. Listen in as we learn that once you learn it--10 minutes is all you need to sort out all those sticky thoughts that are keeping you stuck! “If I want to stop eating meat on Wednesdays, then I have to stop eating meat on Wednesdays.” -Skye Angioletti In today’s episode, Beth is interviewing her client Skye Angioletti, a theology teacher at the Notre Dame School of Manhattan, who was introduced to the Thought Model and Spiritual Fasting in 2022. Together, they are discussing the importance of journaling, as well as Skye’s journey through the Delay and Pray Program. Beth begins by giving a brief introduction to journaling. Using Biblical imagery, she explains the importance of sorting through thoughts with Christ, reminding listeners that their thoughts produce their results. She then begins her conversation with Skye, journeying back through Skye’s momentary successes with other programs and intermittent fasting, and ultimately reaching long-term success through journaling, coaching, and spiritual fasting. With the skills she has learned, Skye can now confidently say, “I know I won’t gain this weight back, and if I did, I’d know exactly why.” Skye shares some of the unhelpful thoughts that she had when she first began coaching with Beth, particularly surrounding the emotional difficulty of relinquishing donuts. Listen in as Skye relates the power of the thought, “It’s not that great,” when faced with the food options at a faculty training. She describes her ability to remain calm when her son’s emotions, a text, and a scale created a situation that would formerly have led to over-eating. Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #10: Lovability “The shape of your body often obeys the shape of your beliefs about yourself, about love, your value, possibility, and God.” -Geneen Roth In today’s episode, Beth is discussing the innate lovability of each human being, regardless of his/her habits, thoughts, or the number on the scale. Many of us let the scale determine our lovability. Beth explains why we are lovable regardless of our eating habits, and how the transformative process of Spiritual Fasting (with the irreplaceable help of the Sacraments) can teach us to love ourselves with deeper compassion, even in the midst of our weaknesses. She explains that Spiritual Fasting can strengthen our understanding of our own self-worth, deepen our desire for Christ, and even love others more fully, without demanding their love in return. Listen to Beth talk about a life-changing moment when God explained her own lovability to her through a secular podcast. She also shares a story about a client whose father never told her he loved her, and how Spiritual Fasting helped her rediscover her own lovability - and even the lovability of her father. Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #8: The Best Year Yet “Sanctify yourself, sanctify the world.” In today’s episode, Beth is claiming 2023 as the Best Year Yet. She’s explaining the transformation that happens through spiritual fasting, and how trusting the Lord with your desires will become easier and make every successive year better than the last. She’s also outlining a few Spiritual Fasting themes for 2023, starting with Fasting for Life. Transformation through Redemptive Suffering The logo of The Catholic Fasting Coach is a butterfly, signifying transformation in Christ - the cross means “through suffering.” Spiritual Fasting = More Suffering? The Delay and Pray process entails suffering, but no more suffering than you are experiencing already . Establishing lifelong habits requires some discomfort. Scripture for the Year - Isaiah 45:2-3 Spiritual Fasting develops a trust that turns even failure into a path to success. Stepping out in faith becomes easier every year. Fasting with A Purpose 2023’s Spiritual Fasting Themes Fasting for Life Fasting for Lent Fasting for Fathers Fasting for Freedom Fasting for Our Lady Fasting for Advent Fasting for Life Kick-off January with Fasting for Life Last year, through prayer and fasting, Roe v Wade was overturned. Beth describes her own journey from pro-choice to pro-life, suggesting that the prayer and fasting of others converted her, and now she is paying it forward. The Body-Soul Composite We have physical bodies (moving parts, complicated systems, and inevitable decay) as well as souls (an animating, spiritual principle, infused at conception, which gives us life, rationality, and immortality). The Battle Cultural norms are strong, but God is stronger. The unborn, the mothers, and the people who support the pro-choice movement need us to fast for them. “Christ can only be met under the weight of the Cross.” -Fr. Alfred Delp, Advent of the Heart. Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #7 Shownotes Top 10 Spiritual Fasting Wins and Fails “You can’t have grand wins without some epic fails: it’s just how life works, this side of heaven.” - Beth Bubik In today’s episode, Beth is reviewing the amazing accomplishments and epic fails that culminated in the most spiritual Christmas of her life. Two Basic Parts of Her Journey She learned to allow the discomfort of actually feeling feelings, without eating or drinking. She offered that discomfort to Jesus to save souls and bring about breakthroughs in her life and the lives of others. The Journey: Adventurous and Dangerous This journey took her out of her comfort zone. Raw emotions and sticky thoughts emerged. “I am patient” Her thought for 2022 was, “I am patient.” By attending a long daily Mass, Beth practiced patience by trusting God with her time. She also practiced patience with her finances by delaying a greatly-desired purchase. In both cases, she learned that when you are patient, God provides generously. “Easy Choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life.” - Juzy Gregorek She learned by doing . Amazing results came through hard work and lots of prayer and fasting. The Top 8 Wins of 2022 She became an expert Spiritual Fasting Coach. She learned to schedule her life around meeting Jesus in the Sacraments. She has kept her weight off now for two years and her health is optimal. She joined the $100K OSV Business challenge and achieved 11th place out of 1300 businesses. She left her Corporate Sales job to fully pursue the Delay and Pray Spiritual Fasting Business and consulted for Metanoia Catholic as an Instructor. She started a podcast, filmed a professional on-line course, began an Alumni Membership, hired a team, learned to Market, hired consultants and coaches, and wrote half of her first book. Personally, she and her husband purchased an old lake house. She has strong family support. 2 Epic Fails She didn’t rest enough in 2022 She had to learn to fail and deal with adversity. The Best Thing Ever About 2022: Changing lives for the better and listening to all the miracles happening in the lives of her family and clients Beth’s Scripture Verse of 2022 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. No, new wine is put into new wineskins.” (Mark 2:22) Shedding an old wineskin and forming a new one is challenging. Redemptive suffering in the form of Spiritual Fasting is the new wineskin. Jesus Christ is the New Wine. 2022 has been the best year of Beth’s life… until 2023 happens! It is going to be grand! Want your own Top Ten list this time next year? Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #6: Food Freedom through Spiritual Fasting with Sr. Josephine Garrett “If we fail, we figure it out and go forward.” -Sr. Josephine Garrett Welcome to the sixth episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast! In this final episode of 2022, Beth is interviewing her favorite nun, Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN. They first met during the Our Sunday Visitor $100K Challenge; afterwards, Sr. Josephine joined Beth’s Delay and Pray Program. Sr. Josephine is a Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth and a licensed therapist. Goals Lose weight! Sr. Josephine explains that her experiences with weight and food have been a concern since childhood. She was attracted to Beth’s Delay and Pray Program as a way to lose weight while including God in the process. Results Over the twelve weeks of the program, Sr. Josephine did experience some weight loss, but she emphasizes that the real takeaway was the richness of spiritual fasting, and understanding how involved God is with her experiences with food. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) Sr. Josephine admits that, as a therapist, she was initially prejudiced against the thought model of the Delay and Pray Program, which she recognized as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model. However, as she began journaling, she gained a new respect for this process. Intermittent Fasting Sr. Josephine discusses how powerful the intermittent fasting portion of the Delay and Pray Program was for her. Her mornings of fasting became her richest time of prayer. She did experience slight hunger, but more than that, she experienced a spiritual and mental tension that created a desire for the chapel. Beth refers this back to a quote from Fr. Ripperger, who says that mortification leads to delight. Group Sessions Sr. Josephine says she found the group to be equally helpful, whether she was being coached or listening to someone get coached. She still thinks of some of the reframed thoughts from those sessions. She particularly thinks the thought “slow is the only way” when she is tempted to try a program that promises significant weight loss in a short amount of time. She also mentions how journaling helped her uncover the shame that was crippling her weight loss journey. Beth describes her own goals for 2023 as a pilgrimage, during which she will embrace failure multiple times. Sr. Josephine offers that, entering in a spirit of prayer, sacrifice and receptivity, we can look up from this journey and realize that we’ve been given a gift from God, rather than drudging through a journey of our own manufacturing. Holy Days, Solemnities, and Sundays Beth brings up the Eat Fast Feast cycle, and the importance of truly celebrating the historical and deeply important mysteries listed in our liturgical calendar. Sr. Josephine admits that she had initial fear around the Feast days, worrying that celebrating on a Feast day would challenge her ability to moderate her feasting or to return to the fast the following day. In recognizing this fear, she became aware of her struggles with food, the limits she’s placed on God, and the self-sufficiency she was practicing. Over time, she has learned not to be afraid of her failures, because she knows how to look at the failure with God. Conclusion In the spirit of failing forward, Beth comments that she was initially afraid to publicly speak about the Faith, because she didn’t want to say anything incorrect. A YouTube video by Sr. Josephine challenged her to confront that fear, and she now credits Sr. Josephine as her inspiration to begin this podcast. Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #5: Resetting Your Health in Both Body & Soul with Jenay Franco “If you’re really opposed to (spiritual fasting), still take that chance. If anything, it might be a sign that it’s something that God really, really wants for you to be able to detach, to prune in the vineyard.” -Jenay Franco Welcome to the fifth episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast! Today, Beth is interviewing Jenay Franco, a certified Catholic coach who helps driven Catholic moms let go of perfectionism. In this interview, Beth is asking Jenay about her journey into spiritual fasting, from the initial resistance to the many benefits she has experienced over the past several months. Resistance Following a very difficult summer, Jenay felt the call to dive into spiritual fasting but experienced resistance towards it. She explains that she didn’t want to “add any more suffering to her life,” admitting that she didn’t believe it when Beth told her that she could actually experience joy in this process. The Experience Beth and Jenay discuss the various components of the Delay and Pray program, such as: The mindset shifts that help unravel the interior knots around fasting The biological as well as neurological shifts of trading short-term dopamine hits for the more meaningful, long-term joy that comes with delayed gratification The spiritual shifts of sacrificing for the benefit of souls The experience of long-term stability and peace over short-term comfort Beth also explains how to train your brain as you transition into this delayed way of dealing with food, so as not to lead your brain into a devastating feeling of deprivation. The Results Spiritually, Jenay realized that her choice to fast for her husband, her marriage, and her kids revealed many more opportunities for sacrifices in her daily life. She and Beth discuss how learning to fast helps you to sacrifice for others while making the task at hand easier. Physically, Jenay is feeling more balanced, her anxiety has decreased, and she has lost nearly thirty pounds. The Scale Beth and Jenay talk about how the scale is simply data: an objective measurement of progress. Checking every day helps you to divorce your self-worth from the number on the scale, and to become curious about why that data fluctuates. It helps pinpoint variations in sleeping and eating patterns, and is a reminder that this is not a diet: it’s a regimen of Eat, Fast, Feast that helps you experiment with what is best for your body. Failing Forward Jenay and Beth discuss the concept of failure while incorporating the Delay and Pray regimen. Jenay suggests that Christ would avoid the shaming speech that we inflict on ourselves, and would speak to us with mercy and compassion. She also mentions that the word “fail” feels heavy, and Beth suggests replacing the word “failing” with “learning.” The Sacraments Jenay shares a beautiful testimony of the power of frequenting the Sacraments during the Delay and Pray program: she describes a day of fasting when her hunger disappeared after receiving the Eucharist. Beth talks about how the health benefits of spiritual fasting become a side benefit as the spiritual benefits grow. She points out that you can get enough of food, but you can never get enough of Jesus. Conclusion Don’t wait until January 1st or Lent: start fasting now! It benefits you and teaches your children virtuous habits. Jenay encourages everyone listening, whether they’re hesitant or downright opposed, to still take a chance on spiritual fasting. She promises that you will not recognize yourself by the end of the journey. Links The Group Coaching Experience Jenay’s website Jenay’s instagram…
Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #4: Eating to Enough “Spiritual Fasting is the spiritual weapon of our times.” Welcome to the fourth episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast! In this episode, Beth is explaining the concept of “eating to enough” by incorporating the “Eat Fast Feast” Calendar into your week. Sharing examples from her own life, Beth reveals how following this calendar can not only help you attain the health benefits you crave, but can also lead to profound spiritual growth for both yourself and your loved ones - and like everything else, it gets easier with practice! Eating “Enough” The definition of enough: As much as is required. Eating “enough” leads to success on Fasting Days and moderation on Feasting Days. Eating, Fasting, and Feasting is the essence of the Delay and Pray program. The “Eat Fast Feast” Calendar Eat Days: Mon/Tues/Thurs/Sat This schedule consists of three normal meals each day. Eliminate sugar, flour, processed food, and alcohol. These foods are delayed until Sunday and offered to God. With these sacrifices, you nourish your body and change the world. These are the days of “The Great Experiment”: learning what is healthy for your body and practicing “eating to enough.” Fasting Days: Weds/Fri Abstain from meat. Either eat less food, or eat less often. Intermittent Fasting is an option, but not necessary. Incorporate more Sacraments on these days! Sunday Funday! Enjoy small feasts on any item you have been delaying. Celebrate the Resurrection on Sundays! Remember: Sunday is a feast day, not a binge day. Delay AND Pray This experience is only successful with the delay of food AND added prayer. This process will reveal vices and encourage the growth of virtues. Make Your Calendar Make room in your schedule for prayer, Mass, adoration, confession, etc. Slowly make adjustments in your food plan. Choose both weight loss goals and spiritual goals. Use this calendar all year for tremendous transformation of body and soul. Use it in conjunction with the Church calendar. These patterns and rituals create good habits, and these habits turn into virtues. The Church Has Always Been Calling Us To Spiritual Fasting. Jesus himself tells us that some demons can only be cast out by both Prayer and Fasting! (Matt 17:21) “Choose Your Hard” Fasting from food is more demanding than giving time or money. It takes preparation, thought, regimen, and community. Fasting leads to healing and obtains breakthroughs from God. We can help save souls by spiritual fasting. Delay and Pray Podcast Episode #3: Trading Sugar for the Sweetness of Jesus “I imagine my body as a spacious stable open to the dwelling of the Infant King, as opposed to all the inns of Bethlehem that had no room for Him.” Welcome to the third episode of the Delay and Pray podcast. At the time of this episode’s release, we are in the middle of Advent, the season of longing and preparing for the birth of Christ. In this episode, Beth is discussing ways to prepare our bodies and souls for the celebration of Christmas through Spiritual Fasting, and how this heightens our desire for the one, true sweetness of the Christ Child. Preparing The purpose of Advent is to shine light in the darkness. Imagine yourself as an Advent candle, “ giving light at the cost of one’s own substance.” - Fr. Alfred Delp, Advent of the Heart . By spiritually fasting, you are making a physical space within your body for Jesus to fill with his love. Waiting Holidays are often an excuse to over-consume as a way to celebrate. Focusing on the Christmas stable helps prioritize the Holy Family by inviting them into your heart by making physical space for them in your body by fasting off sugar, flour, and alcohol. This creates a small hunger, a space, for them that God can fill with his love. You then become more like a humble and inviting stable rather than an Inn--too full for Jesus. Imagining this scene within us promotes both spiritual and physical health without missing out on the holiday celebration. “The less sugar I consume, the more Jesus I want to consume.” In the video, “What Happens If You Stop Eating Sugar For Two Weeks,” Dr. Eric Berg explains nine ways that sugar consumption impacts the body (link below). Celebrating Diversify rest and celebration away from food. Reframe your thinking about the holidays. Trade the sweetness of sugar for the sweetness of Jesus in the Sacraments. Powerful Reasons to Delay and Pray During Advent It helps eliminate mortal sin. It attains a healthy body to serve Christ. Small sufferings and self-denials open up a mysterious depth of closeness with Christ and his Blessed Mother. Make your body the Christmas Stable with your Spiritual Fasting this Advent. You won’t regret it. Links in Today’s Show: The Group Coaching Experience Video: What Happens If You Stop Eating Sugar For TWO Weeks Video: Exorcisms: What Catholics Need to Know w/ Fr. Episode #2: From the Wastelands of Want to the Promised Land of Desire “When your goals and dreams are based on how you can improve the lives of others, the whole universe conspires to make them come true.” Welcome to the second episode of the Delay and Pray Podcast ! In this episode, Beth is exploring motivation, the “key to success,” and the role it plays in helping us to attain our goals. She explains that, to be successful, motivation must be integrated into the very meaning of our existence, or the well-being of others. So, How Do You Begin? Start with earthly motivation, if necessary. Dream big dreams, intertwined with Godly mission. Normalize failure. WANT to want it Imagine the goals coming true. Deciding Goals? Ask Yourself These Questions: What do I seek? What is my desired result? Am I willing to set long-term goals of happiness? Your “Delay and Pray” Goals: Your Bodily/Earthly Goal - The “Delay” Decide measurable steps to reach the goal. This isn’t a Wasteland of Want : it’s the Desire you Seek. Invite God into the goal. Ask yourself: “What substance needs to be delayed in my life?” Your Spiritual Goal - The “Pray” Who or what are you praying for? Choose the “why that makes you cry.” Nothing is too big or small for God. Consider: Why are you choosing these goals? What will it cost if you don’t commit today? Ask yourself: “Why do I choose to have a life where the escape button is better than my actual life?” The Benefits of Delay and Pray in Spiritual Fasting: It will reveal your true desire: Jesus. It will bless others. It will move you toward the long-term goal of happiness. Invite Jesus into your goals. He is waiting for you. Those who genuinely wait on the Lord will not be disappointed.
