The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Show #506 - Timothy, Titus, and Circumcision Today Description In this episode, we discuss Paul’s circumcision of Timothy and why Paul would do such a thing if he believed circumcision was done away with. We also look at Galatians 2 and Titus not being compelled to be circumcised. We also discuss the idea of being “cut off” and what this may mean. If a believer should be circumcised, then what happens if they’re not? Does this mean they are cut off? This leads to a conversation about the idea by many believers that a person can lose their salvation. Time Stamps (For YouTube) • 3:31 Start • 10:48 Why Did Paul Circumcise Timothy? • 23:55 Titus and Circumcision • 34:02 Is Circumcision of the Heart Enough? • 43:03 Was Circumcision on for Passover? Show #505 - Understanding Acts 10 Description In this episode, we discuss Acts 10 and Peter’s vision. Does God really show Peter that the dietary laws found in the Law are no longer applicable for believers in Yeshua? We look at this passage and discuss why we think this interpretation does not line up with biblical theology as a whole. In order to show this we look at several other passages in the Scriptures. If Peter’s vision is about the dietary laws no longer being applicable for believers, why does God talk about clean and unclean food in the prophecies of Revelation and Isaiah? We discuss these passages and how why Peter’s vision is not about kosher food. Show #504 - Understanding Galatians Description In this episode, we look at several passages from the book of Galatians that the Church has commonly used to say the laws of Moses are no longer required to be kept by believers. Specifically, we look at Gal. 4:21-26 and 5:3. What does it mean that a person who is circumcised is obligated to keep the whole law? And also, why does Paul equate Hagar with the covenant of Sinai? Doesn’t this prove that the law is a bad thing? Throughout our conversation, we continue to point these passages back to the Gospel message that Paul proclaims in Galatians 3:8 and the curse that he talks about in 3:10. These references are central to Paul’s point in the rest of the book. Show #503 - The Wrath of God Description In this episode, we have several discussions, one that looks at places where the Scriptures talk about what happened when Yeshua died on the cross and if the Father’s wrath was poured out on the Son, then we turn to a discussion about the difference between Acts 15:1 and 15:5. We then return to our conversation about the wrath of God and what this “wrath” actually would look like in relationship wo the cross. Another discussion we have looks at the difference between the Masoretic text and the Greek LXX. What do we do with the difference we find in the quoted scripture of the New Testament where the Greek translation of the Bible is quoted? Going through some examples we attempt to show the differences and how these should be viewed. Show #502 - Atonement Description In this episode, we start by looking at a common theological position within Christianity that believes a person was justified through the sacrificial system before Christ came. According to this position, a person was justified by the blood of the sacrifices, something that had to be done continually, but Christ came to make it so that people no longer had to offer sacrifices. Now we are justified through faith in Yeshua the Messiah. It is our position that the sacrificial system did not deal with justification of the soul in the spiritual realm, but that it dealt with physical defilement of sin in this world and the physical space of the temple. According to our belief, salvation has always been through faith in Yeshua, both before and after He came to earth. Passages focused on in this episode are Hebrews 10:4 and Lev. 17:11. Show #501 - Keeping the Law is the Doctrine of Demons Description In this episode, we discuss the claim by many that keeping the Torah as a believer in Yeshua places a person in the synagogue of Satan and following the doctrine of Demons. This claim has become a standard go to by many within the mainstream Christian Church when faced with people who want to follow the laws of God. We look at prophetic texts that suggest Gentiles will keep the laws of God when Yeshua comes back and reigns from Jerusalem. We also look at several texts from Paul that uphold and speak of the Law of God as a wonderful thing, not something that should be seen as from Satan. We also discuss being unclean in our modern time and if Yeshua fulfilled this, and a conversation about Acts 17:30 and what the time of ignorance is. Show #500 - Calling it "Common" Description In this episode, we look at the Greek word “Koinas” and how its used in the New Testament. This word has several different meanings and is often times translated “common” but this word can mean some other things as well. Koinas is used by Jewish groups to mean people who are not part of the “in crowd” or are outside the groups graces for various reasons. Such a meaning can be seen in places like Mark 7 and Acts 10 when the word “common” is meant as someone who is on the outside of the mainstream group. We also cover a couple other topics as well, including how to read sensitive biblical content with your children and if the Jewish prayers that are found in the traditional Jewish siddur today date back to the first century. Show #499 - Evolution of God? Description In this episode, we look at a question that has popped up for many about the idea that the God of the Bible is part of Ancient Near Eastern religious evolution. This theology was pushed significantly by Dr. Michael Heiser before he died in books like “Unseen Realms” among others. We discuss Heiser’s theological positions and look at various subjects like the idea that El Elyon is distinct from YHVH and is a chief deity. We also talk briefly about the idea of a “council of the gods,” something Heiser was big on. This is not the first time we have discussed Dr. Heiser’s work on our show. Every time we touch on this topic we see a significant amount of Heiser supporters come forward and claim we have not read Heiser or that we are intentionally misrepresenting him. This, however, is not a good argument against our criticisms. When faced with works that Heiser wrote that are not widely read (like his Ph.D dissertation) many of our critics fall silent. In this episode, Rob challenges supporters of Heiser to produce specific evidence of manuscripts referenced in Heiser’s work. Show #498 - Is the Law of God Special? Description In this episode we, we begin by looking at a comment on X that suggests John 10:29-30, where Yeshua is in the temple during Hanukkah, is not referring to the “Hanukkah” we celebrate and remember today, but is talking about the dedication of the temple in Ezra 6. While such a debate is sometimes brought up, the evidence is simply not there to continue to believe such a view. Historically, the Jews and Israel celebrated the dedication of the temple after the Maccabean revolt. This historical event also sheds light on some of the context in the Apostolic Scriptures (New Testament) and why some mainstream Christian beliefs don’t take this historical event into account. We then move to a conversation about the law of God. Psalm 1 tells us to meditate on the law of God day and night. Is this Psalm referring to the whole 66 book canon or is it referring to the first five books specifically? This leads to a question that many ask, is the Torah more important than the rest of Scripture, or is all of the 66 book canon on the same level as God’s Word? Time Stamps • 3:33 Start • 7:34 Did Yeshua Celebrate Hanukkah? • 19:23 Does this really even matter? • 24:47 Hanukkah as an Important Backdrop • 31:30 How People Came to This Argument • 42:42 Is the Torah More Important? Show #497 - Old Testament New Covenant Members Description Today we look at the question of how a person before the coming of Christ was saved. Were they saved in the same way as people after Christ? If so, does this mean that people like Abraham, Moses, and David were actually new covenant believers? We think that is exactly what it means and we discuss how the Bible teaches this. We attempt to show that faith in the Messiah Yeshua, whether before or after the coming of our Lord were brought into the New Covenant through faith in the “Seed” (Genesis 3:16). It was and still is faith in the seed (that is Yeshua) to deal with the sin problem that brings us into the New Covenant. We also discuss the idea of clean and unclean food in both Old and New Testaments. Was Mark 7 more about whether or not food could make you ritually unclean or is there more going on? We argue that Mark 7 is about man-made rules concerning ritual purity instead of the laws God gave in the Torah. Beyond this, we believe that the dietary laws found in the Torah were not always attached to the temple and ritual purity, but were given for covenant members in their every day life as can be seen in Deuteronomy 14. Show #496 - Are Jews Still God's Chosen People? Description Today we discuss a hotly debated topic about the physical descendants of Jacob. Do Jews still God’s chosen people, or have they been replaced by the Church after rejected Yeshua as the Messiah? We look at Romans 11 which clearly says that there is a remnant of Israel that will believe in the Messiah. Yet, this once again is talking about Jews that have faith in our Lord. Such Jews have entered the New Covenant through faith in Christ. But what about Jews that reject Christ? Do they hold any special place in God’s eyes still? Leave a comment and tell us what you think about the Jewish people today in relation to God’s covenants. Another conversation that comes from this topic is the idea that the Church replaces Israel. In this episode, we lay out our belief that the Church doesn’t replace Israel, but rather that believers in Yeshua attach themselves to the remnant of physical Israel and thus become covenant members. We call this belief “Enlargement Theology.” We also look at John 8:31ff and discuss the first-century belief that a person who had physical bloodline with Abraham was a covenant member and were “saved.” But Yeshua and Paul reject this idea and push faith in the Messiah as what gives a person entrance into the covenant. Show #495 - Is Transubstantiation Biblical? Description In this episode, we look at 1 Corinthians 11 and John 6 to better understand where the traditional celebration of the Lord’s Supper by the Christian Church and the hotly debated doctrine of transubstantiation come from. We push agains the mainstream Christian view that Communion was instituted by Yeshua at the Last Supper and contend that the “Word’s of Institution” (i.e. do this in remembrance of Me) were not instituting something new, but was a reference to the Passover Celebration. You can be part of the conversation! Leave a comment below. We may talk about it on the show. As we dive into the subject of the Lord’s Supper, we talk about the elements themselves. Many people don’t realize that bread and wine were not solidified as the elements of the Eucharist until the third century. What does this mean for the people before the third century? Another aspect to this conversation is John 6:49-60 where the doctrine of transubstantiation comes from. We contend that this doctrine comes from a Greek mindset and not through the lens of the Torah. We finish this episode with a conversation on the biblical covenants and how they fit together. Specifically, we discuss the davidic covenant and if Christians can consider themselves part of this covenant. Our conclusion is that this is not exactly how it works.
