Healing Divisions Through Polarity Wisdom

After living for 5 years in Harlem in the late 60s, Barry Johnson became passionate about changing organizations, communities, and nations so that protest was not the only option to improving the consequences of unjust systems. In his quest to learn, he studied Gestalt psychology and, in the midst of guiding a client session in 1975, stumbled on a breakthrough formula for getting unstuck: managing polarities.

Barry then spent a great deal of time ruminating, refining, and writing on the concept of polarities, seemingly contradictory values that, rather being the basis for polarization, actually are interdependent. It turns out it’s as simple as inhaling and exhaling. They need each other. In his book, And: Making a Difference by Leveraging Polarity, Paradox, or Dilemma, he urges us to stop being only an “OR” thinking culture, and to add “AND” thinking to the culture. In order to be at our best in our personal and communal lives, we will need both “OR” and “AND” thinking applied to the appropriate situation. Applying “OR” thinking to an “AND” situation leads to destructive consequences like racism, sexism, and inequality.
