Every summer we see headlines in the news of wildfires burning out west, weather set ablaze accidentally by irresponsible individuals, the malice hands of an arsonist or simply by the raw power of mother nature wildfires can wreak havoc when left unchecked. Since 2001 an average of 1.6million acres burns due to wildfires every July in the US. Although we tend to focus solely on the negative outcomes from setting our forest ablaze there is a silver lining, pyrophytic plants among other things rely on fire and heat created by it in order to survive. The fresh growth of a new forest after a blaze can generally be found teaming with new plant and animal life. Tonight we are joined by Dwight Snow of the US forest Service assistant fire management officer to talk specifically about Florida's control burning plan and how it is designed to facilitate growth and longevity in our forest not death and destruction.
