Since Self-sovereign identities (SSI) are such a complex, exciting topic we decided to produce two episodes on this theme. In brief, self-sovereign identities refers to digital datasets containing identity-relevant information that are secured with blockchain technologies and that can be administered by users themselves, as we explained the first episode. The second episode is based on an interview with Margret Cheesman, a researcher at the University of Oxford, who explains, illustrated through the use of self-sovereign identities in refugee camps, the challenges and risks associated with this new method of identification. As Cheesman emphasises, what often gets lost in current debates is that there is still no agreement what the notion of self-sovereign identities does actually refer to in practice. Moreover, the technologies required to enable self-sovereign identities are complex, require digital literacy and are still pre-mature. The interview was conducted in English.
