What's the difference between the "gig economy" and having a "side hustle?" We define these two aspects of Work 2.0 in this episode of Grey Matters.
It's easy to confuse phrases we hear today describing work that isn't mainstream or full-time. We hear about the "gig economy" (on-demand talent and skill) and the "side hustle" (work geared for upward growth), and both sound appealing when we're faced with unemployment or underemployment.
As we look deeper at these to options, there are things we should take into account:- Is either a gig or a side hustle a viable solution for a work force that is being aged out of mainstream employment?
- The marketplace's view of older professionals and skilled workers has skewed to realm of being expendable, regardless of years of experience we offer.
- Stepping into a side gig or hustle isn't as easy as flipping a switch. Networking, personal branding, and even marketing can mean either success or squandered effort.
- What is required of us if we anticipate needing to try a gig or side hustle?
