“We don't want Idaho to have a bad reputation. This is our home state. We love our home state. It's beautiful. We pride ourselves on our nature. We pride ourselves on our wildlife. And instead, we are continuing to do things that are… that are sickening.” - Ella Driever In 1995, wolves were reintroduced to central Idaho, and in 2003 a Boise High school called Timberline officially adopted a local wolf pack. Throughout the 2000, students went on wolf tracking trips and in their wolf packs range. But in 2021, Idaho's legislature passed Senate Bill 1211, 1211 allows Idaho hunters to obtain an unlimited number of wolf tags, and it also allows Idaho's Department of Fish and Game to use taxpayer dollars to pay private contractors to kill wolves. That means bounties on wolves, including on public lands. And in 2021, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission expanded the wolf hunting season and hunting and trapping methods. So it's not too surprising to learn that also in 2021, the Timberline pack disappeared. The students, the ones that cared about wolves, at least, were devastated. Last summer I went to D.C. with some of the Species Unite team for a wolf rally on Capitol Hill. While I was there, two young women gave a talk about what happened at Timberline in 2021. Their names are Ella Driver and Sneha Sharma. They both graduated from Timberline High School and were there when their wolf pack disappeared. Please, listen and share.…

As we reach the concluding chapters of Leviticus, we study the commandment of Shmita - that we must allow the land have a Sabbath every seventh year. Once again exploring the insights of Ellen Davis' "Scripture, Culture and Agriculture: An Agrarian Reading of the Bible" we discover the deep structure of the Biblical narrative. We begin to understand how our ancestors saw themselves as a part of the earth, not separate from it, but assigned by the Creator special responsibilities so that we might live in sustainable harmony with all of creation.…

In her superb Torah commentary "Mending the Heart, Tending the Soul: Directions to the Garden Within, " Gail Albert describes the Book of Leviticus as instructions to answer the question "How do we behave when YHVH is living next door?" Emor focuses on the special requirements of the ancient priestly caste. Yet the Torah also insists that all of us are to become a "a holy people, nation of priests," (Exodus 19:6) so somehow the priestly requirements pertain to us all. How do we become a "nation of priests"? The answer of course requires us to behave ethically, but also to expand our consciousness so that we perceive the interconnectedness of all reality.…

Utilizing the insights of Ellen Davis' fine study, "Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture: An Agrarian Reading of the Bible" (Cambridge University Press, 2009) we explore the teachings of this portion from an embodied, holistic perspective. God charges us to become a holy people - what does that mean? How do we map "holiness" onto our bodies, our communities, our sanctuaries, and our environment in a way that connects them all and keeps us conscious of the connections? Reading in this way opens new understandings of the Torah's deep wisdom.…

On this Shabbat, in preparation for Purim, in addition to the regular reading from Torah we always chant a passage form Deuteronomy that instructs us to blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven. In Jewish tradition, Amalek represents absolute evil - human behavior unhinged for morality or empathy. We explore this concept in our class today.…

"Pekudei" means "accounting." Moses gives a detailed accounting of every penny spent on the construction of the Mishkan. Why does the Torah spend time on these boring details? Our tradition teaches that this highlights yet another of Moses' important leadership qualities. A society based on mutual trust could only be created if its leaders were trustworthy and accountable.…

How can they learn to find their bearings, so that they might reach the promised land. Somehow, they must learn to have faith and a sense of purpose to guide them - as do we all.…

Our Torah ancestors were an agrarian society, acutely aware that they must live in harmony with the needs of the earth and the creatures with whom they shared the land. Hence, the rules for the Sabbatical year, when the land rests fallow, and the Jubilee year, when land is redistributed, with the understanding that we do not and cannot own the earth. We align this wisdom to the wisdom of Native Peoples of our continent, as Robin Wall Kimrerer writes in her book "Braiding Sweetgrass."…

The Torah understands the skin affliction known as Tzara'at to be an indicator of a loss of integrity. The afflicted, known as the Metzora, must undergo a period of isolation and then ritual of reintegration into the community, so that further communal disintegration can be prevented.

At the end of the Book of Exodus, Moses assembles the Mishkan, the dwelling place for the Divine Presence, that the Children of Israel have created. The Torah choice of words brings us right back to the beginning, Genesis, chapter 1, when God creates our world. We are meant to understand that, just as God made us a "house" to dwell in, so we, as God's partners in creation, must create a house in which the Divine Presence is welcome, in our homes, in our communities, and in our hearts.…

The final act of the book of Exodus is the actual construction of the Mishkan, the dwelling place for the Divine Presence within the Israelite community. A narrative arc is completed:

Moses has descended once again from the mountain, face aglow, carrying the tablets with the restored covenant in his arms. God has forgiven the Children of Israel for their transgressions with the Golden Calf. They are finally ready to begin creating God’s dwelling place in the heart of their community.…

First, what parallels can we draw between the episode of the Golden Calf - a rebellion and its aftermath - with the storming of the U.S. Capitol this past January? Second, reflecting on the brilliant teaching of the late Rabbi Lord Sacks, what are the pros and cons of we Jews being a historically "stiff-necked" people?…

How does the Torah describe God? Not by doctrine or dogma, but by encounter. Not with systematic theology, but with stories. I find this approach refreshing. Stories do not demand agreement or adherence; they invite engagement.

Our portion begins by legislating how one is to treat one's household slaves. These laws insist that the slave be treated with full humanity. But why does the Torah affirm slavery at all? We explore the ways in which the Torah was perhaps radical for its time, and reflect on our own anachronistic way of projecting our current social norms onto the distant past.…

Drawing on the teachings of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z"l, we explore the important distinction between "covenant" and "contract." Both the Jewish covenant (brit) and the American covenant require us to commit ourselves to a greater sense of belonging, and a shared sense of ideals.

The Exodus is an archetypal myth, meaning that it describes an essential aspect of the human condition, and rings true on every level of human experience, be it political, or personal. Pharaoh is that aspect of a human being whose heart has been hardened to such a degree that their only goal and reality is to serve their own lust for power and control, even at the expense of everyone and everything around them. Rabbi Jonathan shows how Donald Trump is currently fulfilling the archetype of the hardened heart, and we all are suffering the debilitating and destructive results of his leadership.…

After Jacob is buried, Joseph's brother's fabricate a charge that their father supposedly wanted to Joseph to hear, telling him not to bear a grudge against his brothers. Joseph bears no grudge, having forgiven his kin a long time ago. The commentaries do not condemn the brothers for their lie, but rather justify it...this leads us on an excursion into Judaism's teachings about when it is acceptable to bend the truth in order to preserve harmony and peaceful relations.…

This may be the most dramatic moment in the entire book of Genesis. During the long famine, 10 of Joseph’s brothers had come down to Egypt to seek provisions. Joseph, now vizier of Egypt and in charge of food distribution, recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
