As we reach the concluding chapters of Leviticus, we study the commandment of Shmita - that we must allow the land have a Sabbath every seventh year. Once again exploring the insights of Ellen Davis' "Scripture, Culture and Agriculture: An Agrarian Reading of the Bible" we discover the deep structure of the Biblical narrative. We begin to understand how our ancestors saw themselves as a part of the earth, not separate from it, but assigned by the Creator special responsibilities so that we might live in sustainable harmony with all of creation.…

In her superb Torah commentary "Mending the Heart, Tending the Soul: Directions to the Garden Within, " Gail Albert describes the Book of Leviticus as instructions to answer the question "How do we behave when YHVH is living next door?" Emor focuses on the special requirements of the ancient priestly caste. Yet the Torah also insists that all of us are to become a "a holy people, nation of priests," (Exodus 19:6) so somehow the priestly requirements pertain to us all. How do we become a "nation of priests"? The answer of course requires us to behave ethically, but also to expand our consciousness so that we perceive the interconnectedness of all reality.…
Utilizing the insights of Ellen Davis' fine study, "Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture: An Agrarian Reading of the Bible" (Cambridge University Press, 2009) we explore the teachings of this portion from an embodied, holistic perspective. God charges us to become a holy people - what does that mean? How do we map "holiness" onto our bodies, our communities, our sanctuaries, and our environment in a way that connects them all and keeps us conscious of the connections? Reading in this way opens new understandings of the Torah's deep wisdom.…

On this Shabbat, in preparation for Purim, in addition to the regular reading from Torah we always chant a passage form Deuteronomy that instructs us to blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven. In Jewish tradition, Amalek represents absolute evil - human behavior unhinged for morality or empathy. We explore this concept in our class today.…

"Pekudei" means "accounting." Moses gives a detailed accounting of every penny spent on the construction of the Mishkan. Why does the Torah spend time on these boring details? Our tradition teaches that this highlights yet another of Moses' important leadership qualities. A society based on mutual trust could only be created if its leaders were trustworthy and accountable.…
What attributes must we manifest in order to fulfill our potential as beings "created in the image of God"? This week's Torah portion offers insight into that puzzle. The master craftsman who creates the Mishkan is named Bezalel, which means "In the image of God." Bezalel represents the potential within every person.…

We are entering a Shmitah year - every seventh year in the Jewish calendar is a "sabbatical" or "Shmitah" year. We are instructed to let our land rest, and to release debts as well. How can this idea of "letting go" free us to enter a New Year?

As Aviva Zornberg explains, the term "bewildered" derives from "wilderness", as in a trackless expanse where one easily loses one's bearings. This is the condition of the Children of Israel. How can they learn to find their bearings, so that they might reach the promised land. Somehow, they must learn to have faith and a sense of purpose to guide them - as do we all.…

Our Torah ancestors were an agrarian society, acutely aware that they must live in harmony with the needs of the earth and the creatures with whom they shared the land. Hence, the rules for the Sabbatical year, when the land rests fallow, and the Jubilee year, when land is redistributed, with the understanding that we do not and cannot own the earth. At the end of the Book of Exodus, Moses assembles the Mishkan, the dwelling place for the Divine Presence, that the Children of Israel have created. The Torah choice of words brings us right back to the beginning, Genesis, chapter 1, when God creates our world. We are meant to understand that, just as God made us a "house" to dwell in, so we, as God's partners in creation, must create a house in which the Divine Presence is welcome, in our homes, in our communities, and in our hearts.…
The final act of the book of Exodus is the actual construction of the Mishkan, the dwelling place for the Divine Presence within the Israelite community. A narrative arc is completed:

First, what parallels can we draw between the episode of the Golden Calf - a rebellion and its aftermath - with the storming of the U.S. Capitol this past January? Second, reflecting on the brilliant teaching of the late Rabbi Lord Sacks, what are the pros and cons of we Jews being a historically "stiff-necked" people?…

Our portion begins by legislating how one is to treat one's household slaves. These laws insist that the slave be treated with full humanity. But why does the Torah affirm slavery at all? We explore the ways in which the Torah was perhaps radical for its time, and reflect on our own anachronistic way of projecting our current social norms onto the distant past.…

The Exodus is an archetypal myth, meaning that it describes an essential aspect of the human condition, and rings true on every level of human experience, be it political, or personal. Pharaoh is that aspect of a human being whose heart has been hardened to such a degree that their only goal and reality is to serve their own lust for power and control, even at the expense of everyone and everything around them. Rabbi Jonathan shows how Donald Trump is currently fulfilling the archetype of the hardened heart, and we all are suffering the debilitating and destructive results of his leadership.…

After Jacob is buried, Joseph's brother's fabricate a charge that their father supposedly wanted to Joseph to hear, telling him not to bear a grudge against his brothers. Joseph bears no grudge, having forgiven his kin a long time ago. The commentaries do not condemn the brothers for their lie, but rather justify it...this leads us on an excursion into Judaism's teachings about when it is acceptable to bend the truth in order to preserve harmony and peaceful relations.…

Joseph could be understandably bitter about the trajectory of his life: cast out of his family, repeatedly betrayed, imprisoned despite his innocence. He could easily view himself as a self-made man, surviving on his wits and with no allegiance other than to his own survival. But that is not the lesson Joseph has gleaned from the descents and ascents of his turbulent life. Instead, Joseph sees the “downs” as necessary precursors to the “ups.”…

We take a journey from Biblical Israel all the way to New York harbor, as we connect the dots between "Rachel weeping for her children" in the Book of Jeremiah to the identification of the Statue of Liberty with "Mother of Exiles" in Jewish poet Emma Lazarus' sonnet at the base of the statue.
It’s time for Jacob to go home and face his past. It has been 20 years since he stole his brother Esau’s blessing and then had to run for his life. Jacob fled with nothing, and now, 20 years later, he returns with a family, flocks and herds.
This is the beginning of Jacob’s journey of spiritual awakening. By impersonating his brother Esau, Jacob had tricked his blind father, Isaac, and acquired the special blessing of the firstborn intended for Esau. But now, Esau wants to kill him, and Jacob has been forced to run away from the only home he has ever known.…
We explore the many levels of understanding associated with Isaac finding "living waters" as he excavates his father's wells.

In Jewish practice the Torah is divided into weekly portions such that in the course of a full year we make our way through the entire Five Books of Moses. In Hebrew we refer to the weekly portion as the parshah or parashah, the plural being parashiyot. We begin in the beginning every fall at the conclusion of the Jewish Holy Days, and every week we progress until, as a year passes, we reach the end of Deuteronomy. And we begin again. We even have an especially joyous holiday, Simchat Torah, to mark the completion and renewal of the annual cycle of readings. These essays follow that cycle, with one for each parashah, and can be a companion to those of you who wish to follow the annual Jewish rhythm for studying the Torah. There is a Hebrew phrase, שַׁרְשֶׁרֶת הַדּוֹרוֹת sharsheret ha’dorot, the chain of generations. It refers to the ongoing transmission of Torah, from the seminal moment at Mount Sinai — not an historical, geographical moment, but rather the birth of our tradition — down through every generation to the present. It is an honor to be able to forge a link in this living tradition.…

Behar instructs us that we do not own the earth, and that every 7 years (the sabbatical year) we must let the land rest and become ownerless, and every 50 years (the Jubilee)we actually return any land we have acquired to those who have lost it to debt or other misfortune, so that everyone can get a fresh start. We are to "proclaim liberty throughout the land, for all its inhabitants" - the very words inscribed on the Liberty Bell. In this class we explore the nature of that liberty in relation to a sacred connection to the earth and to one another.…

Chapter 23 of Leviticus describes the annual cycle of Jewish Holy Days. The description culminates with Sukkot, and we are instructed to rejoice and to remember that we dwelt in sukkot, temporary, portable shelters for 40 years as we wandered in the wilderness. But why should dwelling in temporary, fragile shelters be a source of joy? Following Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks brilliant commentary, we explore how to nurture joy in the face of our fragile and uncertain futures.…

Kedoshim makes clear that in order to "love our neighbor as ourself" we must be willing to intervene when they are harming themselves or someone else. This is known in Hebrew as "Tochecha." "Values" are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate one's attitudes and actions. "Jewish Values" are those basic beliefs that are fundamental to Judaism. In this discussion, we articulate those values that we agree are "Jewish", and we explore how those values should inform the positions we take in the current moment, both in the USA and in Israel. Also, we discuss that often core values can be in conflict with each other. Thus, values-based decision making often involves balancing conflicting positions, and requires careful and discerning thought.…

Mark contains no narrative about Jesus' birth, while Matthew and Luke each have detailed, but very different, stories. John's account is cosmic and theological. With this new series Reverend Matthew Wright and Rabbi Jonathan Kligler continue their exploration of the profound intersections and shared origins of Judaism and Christianity. During this series we will be studying passages from the Gospels and investigating the Jewish context in which they were composed. In this introductory session, Rev. Matthew offers an overview of modern Biblical criticism. He describes the current understanding of when the Gospels were composed, and explains the difference between the historical figure of Jesus who lived and taught in Judea at the beginning of the 1st century of the Common Era vs. the theological Jesus who emerges over the next centuries as Christianity takes shape. In and around this presentation, our stimulating discussion ranges far and wide.…

This session brings our course to a close. Since the Six-Day War of 1967 the mantle of the Zionist "pioneering spirit" has gradually passed from the Socialist Zionism of the founders to the Religious Zionists and "Greater Israel" nationalist Zionists of the present. Meanwhile, in much of the international arena, "Zionism" has become an epithet, and a modern means of blaming the Jews for global problems. This is a new form of antisemitism. Zionism succeeded beyond its founders wildest dreams in terms of creating a national homeland for Jews scattered all over the world. But Zionism failed to achieve its other intended goal: to solve the "Jewish Problem", that is, antisemitism. (Pease note that the last 15 minutes or so of this recording various class members are speaking, and it may be hard to hear all of their comments.)…

Beginning in the 1880s some Jews despaired of ever being truly integrated into the life of Europe. A new idea emerged, to reconstitute the Jewish People as a modern nationalist movement, intent on creating a Jewish national home in our ancient homeland. With the publication of Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) in 1896, and by convening the First World Zionist Congress, Theodore Herzl catapulted this far-fetched idea onto the global stage, and a movement was born.…

In our far-ranging introductory session, we define terms: What is "Zionism"? And, we discuss the antecedents of the emergence of this movement in the late 19th century: The history of the Jewish People's relationship to the Land of Israel; the origin of the names Israel, Judea, and Palestine; the transition during the Enlightenment from medieval societal structures to modern concepts of nation sate and citizen; the ancient origins of antisemitism; and the unanticipated dilemmas that Jews faced when they were emancipated from their ghettos and permitted to enter European societies.…
As the Tent of Meeting is constructed, a strange verse describes how "the women who served at the Tent of Meeting donated their mirrors to create the sacred wash basin in which the Kohanim would purify themselves." Who were these women who served at the Sanctuary? What is the meaning of their mirrors? We take a deep dive through this looking glass to explore the shadow narrative beneath the surface of our text.…
Why do we need a physical "dwelling place" for God in our midst? We explore many angles, ancient and modern, on the meaning and power of the Mishkan, the dwelling place for the Divine that God instructs Moses how to create.
We take a deep dive into the Torah's laws regarding the treatment of slaves. While slavery as an institution was never abolished by the Torah - slavery as a concept would not come into broad question until the 18th century - the Torah can be understood to be a revolutionary document for its time, and to have planted the seeds of ultimate equality under the law. The Torah insists that slaves possess basic dignity and even have rights, because they are human beings created in the image of God.…
Fear and Faith: Amalek is the internal enemy that fills us with doubt, that makes us question whether our lives have a higher purpose. But if we enter into the sacred covenant at Mount Sinai, and embrace the Ten Commandments, we have the tools to become a holy People.
The Torah is explicit that the purpose of the high drama of the plagues and the exodus is so that we will tell our children and our children's children. In this wide-ranging discussion we explore this theme.
Pharaoh's hardened, constricted, stubborn heart makes him unable to hear, perceive and accept that he is not God, and that there is a power of life far greater than his own ego and desires that he must heed.
The story of the Exodus from Egypt remains one of the most important tales ever written, as it concisely and brilliantly describes the dynamics and consequences of human power and hubris run amok, and then gives us the hope and the faith we need to resist tyranny and to affirm a higher purpose to human existence.…
Jacob/Israel nears the end of his life and wishes to bless his offspring. We propose a reason why he is sometimes called "Jacob" and at other times called "Israel" - could it be related to his state of consciousness?
In this most moving and dramatic story of alienation and reconciliation, we explore the absence of "shalom" - wholeness - among the 12 sons of Jacob. And we witness the extraordinary efforts of Judah to reach into Joseph's traumatized soul and draw him back into that relationship of Shalom.
There is a dark side to Joseph's amazing rise to power in Egypt. He accurately interprets Pharaoh's dreams predicting 7 year of plenty followed by 7 years of famine. But Joseph's plan to deal with the famine includes transferring complete ownership of Egypt into the hands of Pharaoh, and turning the entire population of Egypt into Pharaoh's serfs! What is going on, and why?…
We explore Joseph as a shaman, a dream interpreter, and as someone whose gender identity is perhaps fluid, a liminal and powerful personality.
What if we read Jacob and Esau not as separate twins, but as two halves of a divided psyche? What if Jacob's necessary task is to embody the qualities of Esau, so that Jacob might become a whole person? From this premise we trace a very illuminating reading of the text.
Just before Abraham is about to meet with the king of Sodom, he has a mysterious encounter with Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest to God, the Most High. We never encounter Melchizedek again. Who is he, and what does this encounter represent? Deep patterns of Torah's purpose emerge, and Abraham's mission is clarified.…
What is the message of the story of the Tower of Babel? A close reading reveals powerful lessons.
We dive deep into the mysterious verse, " And God said, 'Let us make the human in our image, after our likeness.'" (Genesis 1:26)Who is "Us?" With whom is God speaking? Ancient interpretations reveal a deep understanding of human nature.
Following a writing exercise, Rabbi Jonathan and members of the class share their statements: "This I Believe..."

Three dimensions through which to manifest holiness: sacred space (the Mishkan), sacred time (Shabbat and holy times), and sacred self (Making oneself into a dwelling place for the Divine).

Aaron and his sons are tasked with keeping the light in the Mishkan lit from evening until morning, perpetually. The Hasidic master, the S'fat Emet, teaches that is everyone's task: to bring light into the darkness through not only performing mitzvot, but by being a mitzvah.
To understand the layout and purpose of the Mishkan, we must learn to think analogically. For our ancestors, every level of reality was in relation to and an analogy for every other level, from the personal to the cosmic.
