Welcome everyone to the 18th episode of Professor P's Podcast. I am bringing you another dose of Elixir, the energic power. The topic for this show is It’s OK NOT to be OK. #truthbetold

I believe the topic for this podcast is so important to speak on. Did you know that there is such a thing as positive toxicity? Well, there is. It is not normal to always be positive and happy. Trying to keep positive vibes all the time will cause you to suppress real feelings that need to be felt. Toxic positivity not only invalidates your emotional state, but also increases secondary emotions.

We especially feel down during the winter months and suffer from Holiday Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of major depressive disorder (MDD) that occurs in seasonal patterns during certain months of the year.

Holiday depression and SAD can be difficult to distinguish from one another, but the duration and severity of your symptoms are usually your best clues.

Holiday Depression

  • Starts around November or December and lifts shortly after the new year ends
  • Symptoms are fairly mild

SAD

  • Typically lasts about 40% of the year—starting in the late fall and early winter until the spring and summer.
  • Often more severe and can be debilitating

Another thing that plagues us is our families. Or even the thought of not having family. Families can be very triggering. First off, I want you all to know that only about 25% live in what is considered a traditional family. That means the other 75% of us live in non-traditional families. And here is a fun fact 100% of them can be dysfunctional and especially triggering at the holiday time. You get to have boundaries. You get to say NO. That is a complete sentence.

It really is OKAY to not be okay.

Yes, it is! Not only is it ok, it is essential. An abnormal emotional response to an abnormal situation is normal. We cannot simply pick the emotions we want to have. It just does not work that way,”

Remember that no emotion is permanent. Anger and sadness, just like happiness and joy, come and go. We need to let ourselves experience painful feelings if we ever want to truly let them pass through us. We must feel our feelings to free them.

Don’t hid your discomfort, you will only add fuel to the fire. When we act like emotional pain doesn’t exist, we send a message to our brain that whatever the emotion is, it is in some way bad or dangerous. If our brain believes we are in danger, our body will respond We may experience rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, a natural need to unnecessarily avoid misperceived dangerous situation. When we avoid any kind of emotional discomfort, even physical pain, we end up unintentionally making those feelings larger, louder, and more overwhelming. If you don’t confront or process emotions in an effective and timely manner, the science shows that it can lead to a myriad of psychological difficulties including disrupted sleep, increased substance abuse, risk of an acute stress response, anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder.”

I am so excited for you to dive into today’s podcast so you can once again receive healing and freedom. Both of which, come in pieces.
