Today Elaine chats to poet and Storyteller Laura Thurlow about her new show River Time. We talk about the inspiration for the show, how women aren’t allowed to grow old and still be beautiful as well as touching on discovering something about yourself that changes everything. River Time- Greenside@Riddles Court - Picles Studio Dates: 9th - 24th August @ 1.45 pm Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/river-time River Time River Time! pulls its title from one of the show’s opening anecdotes. As a student in Edinburgh with unmanaged ADHD, Laura would often go for a night out on the Cowgate, perceive someone as looking at her wrong, become paranoid that her friends secretly despised her, and have a meltdown. To regulate these intense emotions, she would take moonlit walks at 4am along the water of Leith. To this day, if she texts a friend River Time, they know that she means her brain is on fire. A little understood aspect of ADHD is the resulting impact of the Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria that sits alongside it. These mood swings, this intense fear of rejection, are felt in the body as intense emotional pain. Laura’s fear of rejection takes her to the river, calls her to the sea, begs her to submit to the absolution of dark waters. Better to be a beautiful corpse than a failed woman. Laura’s brain is ruining her life and plotting her death. This is a one-woman treatise on deciding not to drown. River Time! discusses Hamlet’s Ophelia and the life and loss of Virginia Woolf. Laura tells anecdotes of rejection and desperation – feeling adrift in one’s own mind. She speaks on grief, and guilt through describing the loss of a friend who did not survive their messy student days. The show is a dark storytelling hour from a gifted comedic voice. It is nuanced and entertaining while inherently and enduringly relatable. Come along and take some River Time! Laura Thurlow Laura Cathryn Thurlow is a writer and performer based in Scotland, originally from Canada with experience performing across Europe. Her previous show, ‘A Preoccupation with Romantic Love’ received critical and audience praise in Edinburgh and Camden in 2023 and was nominated for an Emerging Artist Award with The Neurodiverse Review. Laura’s recent credits include being a finalist at the European Slam Final held by Commonword (Manchester), and at the Glasgow Women’s Library’s ‘Calm Slam’, and Scottish National qualifying slams at Candlelight Open Mic & The Poetry Experiment. ×Elaine chats with actor, writer, Molly Geddes We talk about Molly’s short film Where We Stop which was created to be part of an initiative for Glasgow Girls Club. The initiative aims to raise awareness of Violence Against Women and Girls among young women aged 16-21 in Glasgow as well as highlight information about the available support services. We also chat about being a survivor and how it feels moving forward. TW for this episode discussion of coercive control You can watch Where we Stop here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoxPV6u--uA&t=6s Glasgow Girls Club: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/article/11121/Glaswegian-Girl-Made-Multi-Media-Campaign-to-Combat-Violence-Against-Women-and-Girls-launches-today Where We Stop Is this your stop pal?’ Sophie gets the bus every day. Same seats, same route. With pals, on her own, from work, to college- She never misses her stop. After getting into her first relationship with Jack, who joins her on the bus, she could stay on with him all day. Sophie’s journeys are filled with love, banter and friendship as we see glimpses into the everyday life of a young woman in Glasgow. However, as we catch more and more glances into Sophie’s life, something doesn’t feel right. We begin to see the signs of a relationship that has become abusive- and a bus that seems impossible to get off. ‘Where we stop’ is a film that subtly highlights forms of violence against women and girls and the often-overlooked early signs of domestic abuse. Born from a lack of media that specifically centres young women’s experience of domestic abuse, this film aims to challenge the misconception that the issue primarily affect older women. Created in collaboration with young women across Glasgow, and inspired by the writer's own experiences, it is a film created to open eyes and start conversations. Molly Geddes Molly Geddes is an actor, writer and Graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is also the writer of new short social impact film ‘Where We Stop’, a piece of work that aims to engage young women on the topic of Violence Against Women and Girls. As a young woman, Molly experienced intimate relationship abuse firsthand and knows how isolating navigating an experience like this can be. Molly’s main interest for creating this film was the lack of media around intimate relationship abuse, that specifically centred young women. She felt there was little to no media around this topic that resonated with her, and so she thought it was important to create something that can help other young women in the situation she found herself in. Using her own experiences and research from focus groups Molly created ‘Where we stop’. This is her first time writing for screen, having previously only written for theatre. Molly is buzzing to be part of this project especially with the unwavering support of the Glasgow Girls Club, a group she has been a part of since she was 14 years old. This is a massive full circle moment for Molly, both personally and professionally, and to see the impact this process has already had on young women is magic. In this RE-LISTEN episode Elaine chats with actor, writer, director Virginia Gay. We talk about Virginia’s Fringe First award winning show Cyrano. We talk talking old stories and bringing them to new audiences without repeating the same story but bringing a fresh perspective to it and how vital that is for us all. We talk about the wonderful tool that is comedy that let’s us reach our audience in an authentic and truly moving way. We chat the joy of theatre, words, life, queer love and so, so much more. Cyrano is on now at the Park Theatre London 11th December 2024 -11th January 2025 - Tickets: parktheatre.co.uk/event/cyrano/ CYRANO Virginia Gay’s joyous, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, packed with music, wit and aching romance, is a love letter to hope; to language and desire; to the irrepressible magic of theatre. A big-hearted, irreverent rom-com, perfect for a feel good Christmas treat. Cyrano is the most interesting person in any room – a wordsmith, a charmer. She works twice as hard and runs twice as fast as the pretty boys, because she’s deeply ashamed of something about herself. Enter Roxanne: brilliant and beautiful, with a penchant for poetry and a way with words, just like Cyrano. But Roxanne only has eyes for Yan: hot, manly Yan; all brawn-and-no-brains Yan; who is dumbstruck around Roxanne. Probably shy, right? Until suddenly he starts saying the most amazing things. But it’s not Yan writing these perfect love scenes, it’s Cyrano … Virginia Gay “Virginia Gay graduated WAAPA, then spent four years pretending to be a nurse on All Saints, six months pretending to be cop on Savage River (ABC), and then five years on Winners & Losers, where she pretended to know a lot about high finance. That last one, particularly, was a stretch. She won a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actress for Calamity Jane, starred in the film Judy & Punch which premiered at Sundance, and wrote and directed her first short film Paper Cut, which made Tropfest finals. In 2020 she wrote two new plays: an adaptation of Cyrano for MTC and The Boomkak Panto for Belvoir, which premiered December 2021. She starred in both and also co-directed The Boomkak Panto.” OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk HIPA GUIDES: HIPA GUIDES Equity Toolkit: Link Stellar Quines: Link Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE…

In this episode Elaine chats to Canadian theatre maker Claire Love Wilson. We talk about their show Morag You’re a Long Time Died. Which is touring Scotland/Ireland/England this month after a successful month at the Edinburgh Festival. We chat about the show, generational relationships and much more. Tickets here: http://clairelovewilson.com/morag-youre-a-long-time-deid Morag You’re a Long Time Died Morag’s death left a silence in her place. When her grand-daughter Sam inherits her piano, she also inherits the mystery of Morag’s story. An intimate letter composed of fragmented Scottish ballads leads Sam to uncover Morag’s possible queerness. In piecing together Morag’s history through their shared Scottish musical heritage, Sam discovers a voice of her own. This new experimental musical warps, disrupts, and reconfigures traditional Scottish storytelling, ballad singing and participatory community dance. Reimagining ceilidh theatre from a queer perspective, original compositions are playfully interwoven with electronic loops and interactive dancing to tell old stories anew. Claire Love Wilson Claire Love Wilson (she/they) is queer white/Scottish settler multidisciplinary artist living on the ancestral and unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil- Waututh) First Nations. She works as a theatre-maker, actor, playwright, musician, and singer-songwriter. Claire has been featured as a creator and performer at the Vancouver Fringe Festival, the rEvolver festival, The Shift Festival, and Theatre Under the Gun in collaboration with companies like The Only Animal, Urban Ink, the frank theatre, Aphotic Theatre and ITSAZOO Theatre. Claire has also facilitated workshops on her personal loop- based performance practice “Song-Walking” locally as part of Interplay Festival and the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival, as well as internationally at the University of The West of Scotland, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and BAM in Paris. Claire is the co- creator, lead performer and co-producer of the experimental musical “Morag, You’re a Long Time Deid” (MORAG), which works to queer traditional Scottish ballads through loop-based soundscaping and storytelling. As a work in development MORAG has been showcased at the National Theatre of Scotland, The Scottish Storytelling Centre and at PushOff! in Vancouver. Batshit - Traverse Theatre Dates: 1st -25th August @ Various Times Get Tickets Here: https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/batshit-festival-24 BATSHIT Women have long been locked up, medicated, pathologized and silenced by a simple label - ‘crazy’. BATSHIT is a wildly theatrical, unexpectedly funny, and deeply intimate story of female madness. Created by psycho-siren Leah Shelton (AU) and directed by Olivier award-winning performance artist Ursula Martinez (UK), this is a requiem for Leah’s grandmother Gwen, who was incarcerated for seeking independence in 1960s Australia. BATSHIT draws on personal stories, pop psychology and Prozac-laden humour to explore the myths, fantasies and fears that keep us compliant, and the systems that let us down. Dedicated to all the women labelled hysterical, psycho, hormonal and deluded by a society that seeks to control and discredit their experiences. LEAH SHELTON Psycho-siren Leah Shelton creates stylized, guttural, renegade feminist work soaked in cult references and dark humour. Her work has taken her from the glamour of Las Vegas to the back streets of Kings Cross, from rigorous training in Japan to live art festivals in New York. As a solo artist, Leah has played on and off West End in London. She has graced the cabaret stages of La Clique, Club Briefs, Little Death Club, Vegas Nocturne and Jonny Woo’s infamous UnRoyal Variety Show. Her first solo work, ‘Terror Australis’, received numerous awards and toured Australia and France. Leah’s second solo work, ‘Bitch On Heat’, directed by UK Performance Art luminary Ursula Martinez, has toured to major festivals in Australia and Soho Theatre London to critical acclaim and standing ovations. With Lisa Fa’alafi, Leah is Co-Director of artist collective Polytoxic, creating hyper-visual works underpinned by diversity and collaboration. In this episode Elaine chats with actor, Virginia Gay. Cyrano - Traverse Theatre Dates: 1st-25th August @ Various Times Tickets available here: https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/cyrano-festival-24 Park Theatre London 11th December 2024 -11th January 2025 - Tickets: https://parktheatre.co.uk/event/cyrano/ CYRANO Virginia Gay’s joyous, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, packed with music, wit and aching romance, is a love letter to hope; to language and desire; to the irrepressible magic of theatre. Today Elaine chats to comedian, writer and actor Elaine Malcolmson about her new show Joik. We chat the inspiration for the show, how you can find yourself lost after something huge happens in your life and you are dealing with grief, we take the fringe experience and much more, Joik- Gilded Balloon, Patter House - The Penny Dates: 31st July- 24th August @ 7.40 pm Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/elaine-malcolmson-joik Joik Elaine Malcolmson returns to the Fringe with a comic journey from lost to found in the company of a reindeer. A gentle show that aims to bring hope and solace to all, Joik explores human emotion, memory and connection with the help of a hardy Arctic mammal. Feeling lost and misunderstood in the wake of a bereavement, Elaine is gifted a reindeer with unexpected consequences. Follow her unlikely path from grief to comfort in what is probably the second-best show about a reindeer you’ll see this year. Finding somewhere beautiful to put the things we never asked for in the first place, Joik makes its way to a resolution of unapologetic optimism, celebrating the small moments of understanding that remind us we're alive. You will also learn a fair bit about antlers. These fragile subjects are in safe hands as Elaine is an award winning comedian, writer and actor whose previous shows have examined loneliness using Disney princesses and looked at the hopelessness of capitalism using salad spinners. Elaine Malcolmson Born and raised in Northern Ireland, and now living in Glasgow via a stint in Wales, Elaine is known for her deliciously dry humour and original take on everything from current affairs to colouring in. A Scottish Variety Award nominee and Scottish Comedy Award winner, Elaine’s TV and radio work includes BBC Scotland’s Breaking the News and whatever combination of these you think is most impressive: Good Morning Scotland, A Funny Kind of Life and Death (they’re both BBC Radio Scotland) Radio 4 Extra Stands Up, BBC 2’s What Women Want, BBC NI’s The Blame Game. She has gigged across the UK, performing at the Big Tickle Comedy Festival in Derry, Merchant City Festival in Glasgow, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Glasgow International Comedy Festival; she made her international comedy debut at New York Comedy Festival in 2012. Elaine has written for and performed in various sketch groups including the Stockholm Syndrome and Alchemy. She has also been known to act and recently stared as Penny in BBC One Northern Ireland’s, RTS award winning, Soft Border Patrol. Elaine is currently writing, among other things, a new solo show and another short play. Watch this space. 15:54Today Elaine chats to poet and Storyteller Laura Thurlow about her new show River Time. She has recently been a featured performer with both The Loud Poets and Spoken Word Paris. She is currently completing a Master of Literature at the University of Glasgow. 39:58Today Elaine chats with writer and performer Sora Baek about her play Sell Me: I Am From North Korea the true stories of incredibly courageous North Korean women defectors. We chat the creation of the play, the importance of keeping your creativity while being a mother and much more. Sell Me: I am From North Korea - Pleasance Courtyard - Below 31 July - 25 August (not 7, 13, 19, 20) @12:35 (55 mins) Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/sell-me-i-am-from-north-korea Sell Me: I am From North Korea SELL ME follows 15-year-old Jisun, a North Korean girl who decides to sell herself to an old Chinese man to make money for her mother’s medication. After risking her life by crossing the Tumen River into China, Jisun learns her malnourished, underdeveloped body is not wanted. She finds herself having to make her own way on the streets, struggling in a merciless foreign land where her very existence is illegal. Inspired by the journeys of many North Korean women defectors, SELL ME portrays the everyday lives and impossible choices made by those living in North Korea, too often overlooked and distorted by Western media. Sora Baek Sora Baek is an award winning actor, playwright, and producer from South Korea. She has been featured on the Korea Times, News 12 NJ, and Voice of America. Select acting theatre credits include: SELL ME: I am from North Korea (the US Capitol Center), The Storm, A Christmas Carol, and Sworn Virgin (NYC and International Tour) with Blessed Unrest and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Calaveras Repertory Theatre). She received a Best Actress Award at the Epidemic Film Festival in San Francisco. Sora has been working with Only Make Believe which brings interactive theatre to children with disabilities over 15 years. *Sora’s grandparents fled the North during the Korean war with her father when he was only four years old. She grew up in a small South Korean town across the river from North Korea, looking out at the empty ghost buildings. Sora’s writing and research into the lives of North Korean defectors were born out of her family’s inability to return home, the pain caused to many innocent families by the war that divided the two countries, and the pain many have since continued to live through. She presents this performance for her father, her grandfather, and all those who cannot go home. 31:18In todays episode Elaine chats with New Zealand performer and choreographer Sacha Copland about her new show Anatomy for Accounts. We chat the creation of the show, what we are actually worth, how amazing our bodies are and the work that we need to do as white people to break down misogyny, racism, homophobia and so much more and how we do this with out getting defensive. Anatomy for Accountants ticket link: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/anatomy-for-accountants A high-risk, high-return dance show about how much our physical bodies are worth in a society ruled by cold hard numbers. Natural growth doesn’t make sense in a world tightly commanded by economics - and prolific choreographer Sacha Copland of Java Dance Theatre (Back of the Bus, 2014) has something to say about it. A show for lovers of the body (and accountants), Anatomy for Accountants is a passionate, new dance-theatre show about giving bodies back their full range. Copland prices every aspect of her own life to deconstruct how we define and understand our own worth whilst celebrating the body. Joined by live musician and performer Tristan Carter in the role of number-crunching Chief Financial Officer, Copland crafts a deeply creative, vulnerable meditation on her own human form - pricing her limbs, head, and organs nude for the audience to see and intimately experience. Lilting between gentle and brutal, soft and dark, universal and personal, Anatomy for Accountants examines how our value changes and shifts across our lived experiences; how every forced or pressured YES or each resolute or exhausted NO impacts how we are received by others, and if we depreciate or increase in value in their eyes. Holding the audience in a charged yet ultimately compassionate embrace, Anatomy for Accountants references deep family histories, personal anecdotes, what we owe the future, and how the body holds onto it all - showing us that, in the end, it is simply enough to exist. Through Copland’s creative search to reunite with herself, the show celebrates the expansive nature of humanity and our own thrilling ability to be alive. 33:48In today’s episode Elaine chat with 2 thirds of tasteinuourmouth theatre company Laoise Murray and Grace Morgan. We chat making work as a new company, women in theatre & indeed the world. How capitalism and the wellness industry uses us yet we buy in to it and much more. You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) is on from the 1st -26th August at Buccleugh Terrace. Tickets available via Summerhall Ticket link: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/you-re-needy-sounds-frustrating You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) tasteinyourmouth present the UK Premiere of their intimate, site-specific theatre show, You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) - after receiving nominations for Best Production and First Fortnight Award during their sell-out Dublin Fringe Festival 2023 run. Skewering the dark undertones of the pastel pink wellness industry and the ways in which it plays on women’s insecurity, You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) invites one audience member at a time to the world of Carrie, who has retreated to her bathroom in the pursuit of wellness, solitude, and perfection. She spends her days taking long, tea-infused baths, and applying SnailMucusWhalePlacenta Face Masks (™), whilst living off of slim noodles and endless cups of coffee. Assuming the role of a support worker, audience members individually enter Carrie’s world, and attempt to coax her back into reality and reintegrate her into society. Carrie’s state of mind within You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) is inspired by hikikomori, the Japanese phenomenon of young people retreating to solitude, usually within their parents’ homes. The audience’s position within this comes from the custom of ‘Rental Sisters’, people who voluntarily visit these withdrawn individuals to encourage them to re-enter society. Created by tasteinyourmouth, performed by Laoise Murray and Heather O’Sullivan, with direction from Grace Morgan and original material and dramaturgy by William Dunleavy, You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) is an uncanny, feminist, and intimate multi-disciplinary piece that explores how capitalism seeks to control women’s bodies through the concept of ‘wellness’. A clever, funny, existential play about philosophy and childbirth – with a touch of dubstep, karate, and slagging Socrates off. An overnight smash-hit success in Norway with an ever-growing cult following and Finalist for the Hedda Award 2023 as Best Theatre Play, award-winning Det Andre Teatret brings their hilarious and existential theatre show Good Luck, Cathrine Frost! to the Festival Fringe 2024 to talk philosophy, birth, and public health. Did you know Socrates was pregnant? Yep - all the time. He gave birth to the immortal, pure, and civilised: ideas! Imagine that. All Cathrine Frost did was grow and give birth to an ACTUAL screaming, human, ugly baby… and then decided to write a comedy theatre show about it, discovering a galaxy of secrets in the process. No notes, huh Socrates? Cathrine Frost Andersen is an actor, improviser, and nurse. As an early member of the ensemble at Det Andre Teatret, which she helped start in 2011, she plays in a number of different improvised performances throughout the year, both on the theatre's own stage in Oslo and out on tour. Cathrine is part of Det Andre Teatret’s longest-living improv group Improtent and she has a long acting career behind her. She has, among other things, been involved in the theatre production Vildanden at the festivals in Bergen with Vegard Winge directing, and a residence in Kautokeino at the Sami National Theater Beaivvás. She has participated in various theatre festivals at home and abroad, and is also on the TV screen now and then. In autumn 2022, she debuted with her first solo performance Good Luck, Cathrine Frost!. The show was a finalist to the prestigious Hedda award 2023 as Best Theatre Play.
