Mission From His Wounds
Manage episode 382347549 series 2320041
Call to Worship: Adapted from Psalm 72 (NIV)
Sermon QuestionsEndow the king with your justice, O God,the royal son with your righteousness.May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness.May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy;may he crush the oppressor.May his name endure forever;may it continue as long as the sun. Then all nations will be blessed through him,and they will call him blessed.Praise be to the LORD God,who alone does marvelous deeds.Praise be to his glorious name forever;may the whole earth be filled with his glory.Amen and Amen.
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:1-5 (NIV)1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Sermon Text: John 20:19-23 (ESV)I. The Mission Given (v 19-21)19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
II. The Mission’s Empowerment (v 22-23)22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
