Tales of Toxicity: The Chronicles of Two French Poisoners
News of the Times Episode 351 | 1921 & 1930
We are in France looking at two cases from 1921 and 1930. Both cases, when we started ot investigate them were rather shocking, even by us hardened crime researchers.
The first case, from 1921, is in a post-World War 1 environment with its first use of biological weapons and its tragic impact on thousand of soldiers, and involves a man who likes the good life. Nicknamed “Gentleman Girard”, on the side of his love of literature and music, he has a keen interest in bio-toxicology. Girard cultures his own bio-hazards, feeding this in wine glasses or through injection to his intended victims, thinking that the crimes will look like a natural death.
Our second case from 1930 involves a doctor who would rather not practice as a doctor or dental surgeon. Laget is a man in constant need of money and he burns through money possibly faster than any other criminal we have ever covered.
He finds himself fortunate enough to be in contact with a wealthy family with two daughters – each bringing with them a hefty dowry. At the death of one, he moves onto the next. And his sister, and his rich aunt….
