Not Quite My Tempo….
Today we discuss the film “Whiplash”; released in 2014, directed by Damien Chazelle. Starring Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and Paul Reiser.
This movie provides an intimate look into the life of a jazz studio drummer at one of the country’s top music schools. We are introduced to Andrew, a raw and talented drummer who is searching for his place as a drummer. Influenced by past drummers like Buddy Rich; he dives into the improvisational aspect of music. He runs into Terrance Fletcher, the lead conductor of the ‘Studio Band’ who by extreme measures is very demanding of his musicians.
With Fletcher’s method, there is no ceiling and we constantly see him cross it every single time. One of the main things we discuss in this episode is whether Fletcher’s method of teaching/leadership yields results; in spite of the collateral damage if may cause.
Much thanks to my buddy Byron; a drummer himself who joined me in discussing the film and musicians in general. He brought a unique perspective to the mindset of a musician and the level of discipline needed to improve as a musician.
