Every metalhead is aware of "Dopesmoker". In many cases its reputation and lore far exceed its actual listener count. For many, "Dopesmoker" is THE stoner tune. I mean, come on, 63 minutes of wall-of-sound, fuzzed out riffage? What's not to love?
Marc disagrees. Marc argues that "Dopesmoker" is quite overrated, to the point where it overshadows plenty of other releases in the genre that actually deserve the spotlight for the legacy that they have created, the paths that they have cleared in the hazy forest of heavy stoner music. He even argues that it is Sleep's weakest output - by a good margin. His central argument? "Dopesmoker" is, more or less, the same general vibe for nearly its entire runtime. One might call it "boring" after a few minutes.
Per the 42 minute runtime you can probably guess that I have opinions of my own on this subject. Marc and I have both contributed to heavy stoner music, so we might call ourselves the right guys for the job of tackling this conversation. Did we agree or disagree on "Dopesmoker"? Listen to find out!
