Support is now available for those affected by the August 6th Mendenhall River flood in Juneau. The Red Cross has opened disaster assistance intake at their Lemon Creek office, located at 5636 Glacier Highway. Additionally, the State of Alaska will open two in-person Disaster Assistance Centers starting Wednesday, August 14th.

Voter turnout for Alaska’s August 20 primary election is lower than in the past two elections but is higher compared to the 2018 and 2016 primaries, which didn’t have extraordinary circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic or a special election.

Alaska's mining industry supported 11,800 jobs and generated $1.1 billion in wages in 2023.

Ten disabled Alaskans have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state and their former state-appointed guardian, alleging financial abuse and neglect. The lawsuit claims that Thomas McDuffie, operating under Cache Integrity, failed to properly care for over 100 state-assigned wards, all of whom are disabled, elderly, or ill, between 2021 and 2023.

Laurie Duncan, a first-grade teacher in Sitka, received a layoff notice in April during her second year of teaching—just three months before she was due to give birth. She's one of many teachers in Sitka who lost their jobs this spring due to financial uncertainty. Nearly 20% of Sitka’s teachers were laid off, including all librarians and most reading specialists.
