They highlight the importance of creating a culture of collaboration and continuous learning to enhance the quality of service and job satisfaction among bus operators, while also emphasising the programme’s potential to strengthen community ties and improve overall transit experiences for passengers.

Then, Phil and Patrick delve into the challenges surrounding the ‘Mentors Moving Metro’ programme, particularly focusing on the recruitment and retention of mentors. They discuss the complexities of matching mentors and mentees effectively, considering factors like language proficiency, especially in a diverse workforce environment. Phil underlines the need for strong collaboration between the union and management to address these challenges and ensure successful mentorship relationships. In addition, Patrick outlines the programme’s long-term vision of evolving into a formal registered apprenticeship programme, offering various benefits to participants.

King County MetroPhil DeVault started as transit operator at King County Metro Transit in 2001. After driving for 10 years, he managed a communications team for the Bus Operations division for 12 years. After a short stint as Interim Deputy Director of Bus Operations, he now supports the division as the Director.

King County MetroPatrick Brady is in his 15th year as a Metro Driver. From 2015 to 2021 Patrick was the elected Financial Secretary/ Treasurer of Local 587. Choosing not to run for a third term Patrick is back to driving and often assists the current ATU Officers focusing on special assignments like the Joint Mentorship Initiative. In Spring 2024, he will assist in the launch of Mentors Moving Metro.
