58:04In this episode I spend time talking with Jason Okroy, Co-founder and CEO of Salute Mission Critical, a US military veteran focused data center services company. Having toured hundreds of production data centers over the years, the facilities I have walked through that were the cleanest and with the most educated facilities staff were those operated by veterans of our armed forces. If you think about it for even a few seconds, this starts to make perfect sense given the training, discipline, necessity to perform under pressure and repetition of complex tasks within the military. Our conversation covers how and why the company was founded in 2013 and a few of the lessons Jason and his company have learned serving the veteran community as well as the facilities and operations side of the data center industry.…

1:51:10Early on in our conversation, Jeff politely made me aware that he has socks older than me. Apart from this telling me that he definitely needs some new socks, I became even more excited to dig into the interview knowing that he has literally been helping to build the infrastructure that runs the digital world longer than my short 40 years on this planet. We talk through him helping to start the first ISP in Minnesota, how exactly high capacity optical switching gear works and what a day in the life of Jeff looks like at DC Blox. For good measure we threw in some perspectives gained in light of current events through the lens of my rereading Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi DUNE chronicles and Jeff's rewatching the 2004 Battlestar Galactica TV series. Unsurprisingly, I learned a lot from Jeff in our short time together and I am positive you will too.…

1:38:59Aaron Hughes has spent decades architecting, building and managing various components that make up the internet we all use today. Ever heard of PeeringDB.com? Yeah, that was one of his many "side projects" that was put together in a matter of days because it simply needed to be done and he saw no one else doing it. Since I met the man, he has been a role model of productivity, successfully juggling multiple roles and wearing multiple hats at the same time. His Linkedin Profile says it all to this extent. Thankfully for me, we both worked together when I first started in the industry and we also happened to live just a few minutes down the road from one another in Santa Cruz, CA. Aaron quickly became one of my favorite people to sit back and talk shop with because I always walked away learning something new and, at some point, laughing until I cried. I am blessed to have had so many opportunities to learn, laugh and cry with Aaron and his equally bright and fun loving wife Stacy. I hope you enjoy listening in on our wide ranging conversation. I'll give you a teaser with 2 of my favorite quotes that came out of it; "Yes, there is hope, but this hope is predicated on education." '"Embrace Automation" is the new "Work with your brain and not with your back"' Enjoy!…

1:21:22Rob attended one of my data center bootcamps in Denver years ago and instantly became an advocate for the education I was providing the industry. It took all of a few minutes for me to become a huge advocate of his as well, as he is, truly, a master of his craft. He also knows how to throw truly epic parties, which is another shared passion of ours. After nearly 2 decades working for various data center service providers, Rob made the jump to the client representation side exclusively last year and hasn't looked back. Our conversation covers the evolution of Open IX, an organization he currently serves on the Board of, lessons learned working in the industry, and a candid conversation about what the future of interconnection and carrier hotels might look like. 1:24:52This week on the I Love Data Centers podcast: MicroCorp’s New Cloud Elements Division and the Anatomy of a Telecom Master Agency, I interview the President of MicroCorp, Phil Keenan. When I first met Phil in Atlanta nearly 3 years ago, it was obvious he was different than every other executive I had met working in the telecom industry. He cut through the typical positioning BS right from the start, wanted to execute quickly, and viewed the industry through the same lenses I did. Truth be told, with the launch of the Cloud Elements Division of MicroCorp in April of this year, the vision of what we planned in our very first meeting has now become manifest. Our conversation covers the specific function and role the “Master Agency” plays in our industry and how a service provider can be successful in the indirect channel. We also discuss the who, how, what and why of MicroCorp’s new Cloud Elements Division. Most importantly, however, we discuss how the lessons Phil learned selling vacuum cleaners door to door in the UK helped shape him into the executive he is today. Show Notes: 1:12 Episode starts 2:15 Phil’s backstory 3:33 How Phil got into tech 10:19 What made Phil switch industries and move to the Channel? 13:02 The difference between the way Phil views the world versus how traditional telecommunication master agents view the world 17:23 What made Phil interested in Open Spectrum? 31:28 How does an indirect channel operate and what purpose does a master agent serve? 34:25 Why can’t carriers and service agents fill that role? 39:29 What’s the issue with letting the service provider do pre-qualification with the customer? 44:16 What is Cloud Elements and how will it empower agents to do more? 50:07 How does Cloud Elements affect the engagement between an agent and their client? 55:02 Phil’s ideas that have been valuable to his interaction with the community he works with 57:12 What will the next few years look like for MicroCorp? 1:00:22 The importance of trust 1:01:34 Phil’s first time walking into a data center 1:03:26 At what point did you realize that this was the industry you wanted to work in? 1:04:58 Common misconceptions service providers have about the channel 1:05:48 What it takes for a service provider to be successful in building relationships with master agencies 1:12:56 What do you think the main component to your success was? 1:14:18 What is some advice that you wish you had had five years ago? 1:18:35 What advice would you give an agent just starting out?…

1:25:14This week on the I Love Data Centers podcast: Strategic Foresight and The Cyber Attack Survival Manual, I interview author and bona fide futurist Heather Vescent. Heather and I met nearly a decade ago at a VC event in Los Angeles. Our mutual passion for innovation, technology, strategic thinking, design and education has kept us connected over the years through various projects. She is the only person I know to have received a Masters in Strategic Foresight, such that she can call herself a Futurist and have the credentials to back it up. Recently, Heather co-authored "The Cyber Attack Survival Manual: Tools for Surviving Everything from Identity Theft to the Digital Apocalypse". The book became my top recommendation and gifted book the moment I finished it. It is a must read for both complete noobs to all things Cyber Security and advanced hackers. I could sing Heather’s praises for days, but in short, she is a badass and her energy is contagious. Heather Vescent is founder of The Purple Tornado, a transmedia futures studio, whose clients include US & UK governments, SWIFT, Disney, mid-size companies and start-ups. Her research explores trends in the future of cybersecurity, digital identity, money, economies, augmented intelligence, relationships, and war. It been covered in the New York Times, CNN, American Banker, CNBC, Fox, and the Atlantic. She is an author of the Cyber Attack Survival Manual: From Identity Theft to The Digital Apocalypse, published by Weldon Owen. 1:42:10Becoming an independent IT consultant and navigating the indirect sales channel ecosystem can appear daunting. It appears daunting, because it is daunting. For those starting agencies on their own, this is no different than starting any entrepreneurial venture. For those catering to these independent consultants, this is no different than having to lead and manage a pack of hungry wolves in the wild. Those brave souls who have been successful on both sides of the equation, are few and far between. Those who have been successful and not had to compromise their integrity and character along the way, are even harder to find. I am blessed to have met one such brave fellow, Rob Butler, early on in my own journey. His friendship, wisdom and encouragement over the years are part of what helped me persevere during the numerous occasions I questioned why I ever put myself and my family through the difficulties of bootstrapping a company. Our conversation dives headlong into the indirect channel ecosystem and the journey we, and most agents, have taken. Rob's experience is unique and insightful, as he worked for a few different IT service providers AND one of the now established Master Agents/Distributors in the industry prior to becoming a full time independent agent himself. Some knowledge, experience and harsh Truths are dropped here that all those working in, or considering working in, "the channel" need to hear. If you're not afraid to hear a very raw conversation about what motivates agents, service providers, buyers and distributors, this podcast will be well worth your time, guaranteed. Show Notes: 1:12 Interview starts 2:00 Where are you right now? 3:21 How did you get involved in tech? 5:10 How did you migrate into the network industry? 8:21 Prior to college, did you have a gaming console? 9:17 How Rob started working for Telarus 10:29 What is Telarus? 12:45 In the early days, who were some other master agents? 13:59 What was unique about Telarus’ business model at the time? 17:37 How was it funded at that time? 21:00 What are the traits that you think made you successful? 27:24 Do you think that if you had a safety net in the beginning you would still be as successful now? 29:39 What do you wish you had done differently starting out? 32:29 What other things would you have done differently? 34:14 What advice would you give someone just starting out? 39:05 A mile wide and an inch deep vs an inch wide and a mile deep 42:53 The case for why a diversified master agency portfolio makes sense 50:02 Why an independent company wouldn’t want to go directly to the service providers themselves 1:06:56 The importance of bringing in a consultant and master agency 1:10:11 The problem with new channel programs 1:17:36 What is CompTIA? 1:22:20 How can you become involved with CompTIA? 1:25:01 What was the best advice you received when you first got started in your career? 1:27:14 What was the first data center you remember walking into? 1:31:29 How to get in contact with Rob Rob’s phone number (512)-322- 9664…

1:06:50The interview I did with Gil Santaliz in Episode 18 got my wheels turning on the topic of fiber optics and I wanted to learn more. It just so happens that one of my friends right here in my backyard, Kevin Miller, runs a firm that specializes in designing and manufacturing customized optical fiber platforms for network simulation testing, latency, and training applications. Hence, this episode was born! Kevin and his father have collectively spent over 50 years playing with optical fiber and the related systems and industries this fiber is deployed within. The details we discuss about the technology itself and the industries M2 Optics supports is fascinating and educational in and of itself. Even more fascinating to me, however, was the conversation we had about how he and his dad have managed to bootstrap the business into the success it is today, all while maintaining a productive and caring personal relationship with one another. Session Notes: 1:12 Episode starts 2:22 Where are you from and how did you get into tech? 5:33 What exactly does M2 Optics do and where do you do it? 10:18 Who competes in your market? 11:23 What is a strand of fiber? 15:10 Types of fiber explained 18:07 Limitation for how much information can push through fiber 22:02 Transceivers explained 23:18 What is the process for fusing broken fiber back together? 25:34 What causes data loss after fusing fiber back together? 26:54 How often does fiber get cut and require someone to go out and fix it? 29:55 How do you detect where a problem along a fiber strand is and how was it done prior to modern technology? 32:59 What experiences or data sets you came across that blew your mind? 34:35 Where do you see the optical fiber marketplace going? 41:48 What is the difference between submarine cable fiber and terrestrial fiber? 43:36 Over time, does fiber degrade even if it is not broken and fused back together? 45:25 How Kevin’s dad got started in the optical fiber industry 46:28 Are there any lessons your dad has taught you over the years? 49:49 If you could go back to 2001, what advice would you give yourself? 52:33 How are you and your dad able to successfully work together?…

1:31:15"We Need a revolution in our behavior, in our ethics, rather than just a revolution in our technology." -Brian Patrick Green I was introduced to Stuart Robbins through reading his book, "Lessons in Grid Computing: The System Is a Mirror," over a decade ago. As a young professional that had just transitioned from being a full time entrepreneur to working in "Corporate America," the book provided a foundation in systems theory as it applies to corporations and Information Technology. After reading the book, I reached out to Stuart directly and somehow convinced him to join me for lunch in San Francisco back in 2005, which initiated a friendship that has persisted ever since. In truth, there are few books, outside maybe Frank Herbert's science fiction novel "DUNE," that have as many passages underlined and my chicken scratch throughout the open margins than Stuart's. There are also few executives and consultants I have ever met as humble and enlightened as Stuart who can navigate and intertwine fluently the topics of sociology, psychology, technology, systems theory, theology, politics, ethics, entrepreneurship and corporate culture. As such, you can imagine how overjoyed I was to have the stars align to spend a week with him in Raleigh as he mirrored me in my office (even living in the guest wing of my home) for an entire week! This episode is a snap shot into one of the many reoccurring and enlightening conversations Stuart and I had throughout the time we had together. Please note, this episode is different than most and, to be blunt, rather heavy listening. My hope in sharing this conversation between Stuart and myself, however, is that it contributes to your evolutionary journey and experience within the intense and rather overwhelming times we live in today.…

1:13:12When I was a fast moving young sales executive working for the national data center company QTS from 2009-2011, Shelagh was one of my favorite people because she knew how to quickly get things done within the company. She was respected by both her peers and the senior leadership within the company and was able to deliver answers quickly and accurately based on her relationships and experience watching 1000's of deals cross her plate. By the time our paths crossed she had already been with QTS for 5 years and will soon be celebrating her 14 year anniversary there. Our conversation covers a wide variety of topics; from our reactions to all the recent M&A activity taking place, to what she feels are the key characteristics of an elite sales executive and sales manager, to what her experience has been like specifically as a woman working within a predominately male industry. The insight and advice Shelagh provides throughout this episode is essential for anyone working in the data center industry. I was excited to even hear her share a story about what it was like managing me during our brief time together at QTS!…

1:16:20In this episode of the I Love Data Centers podcast, Data Center Patents and Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence, we have Scott Noteboom. Scott is the founder and CEO of LitBit, a company focused on making Artificial Intelligence (AI) a useful and practical tool for companies to leverage on a day to day basis. Scott’s roots are in the data center, having worked for many years starting an ISP, working for an integrated voice and data startup and then joining the likes of Abovenet, Yahoo! and Apple overseeing data center engineering and operations. With a core background in software, his perspective on the industry is unique in that he’s always been working toward developing solutions that will make data centers smarter, and more importantly, communicate with one another intelligently. Hence, his pivot in 2013 toward the AI space and work toward developing an AI specifically for the data center vertical (among many other verticals) makes total sense. Our conversation explores primarily what AI is, and is not, along with some of the practical ways AI is being used today and will be used over the coming years and decades to come. Having accepted the reality that AI will play a large roll in our future as a species, I admire and stand behind Scott’s commitment to educating people on the topic and technology and also doing his part to ensure the technology is used for good. Scott Noteboom Interview Show Notes 2:09 Interview starts 3:28 Where are you right now? 4:41 Where were you born? 5:51 What was the earliest computer you had? 7:15 How did your education in technology play out? 11:02 Patents and data centers at Yahoo! 17:14 Scott’s first time in a data center 19:22 How Scott got started working in an ISP 21:40 What Scott has learned from working on the data center side with big companies 24:29 Why Scott chose to go into AI 33:03 Is it risky using AI in a business? 39:05 Scott explains Lit Bit 41:46 How DAK differs from a typical BMS solution 45:34 What checks, balances, and controls can you put in AI? 55:07 Will machines and humans integrate with one another in the near future? 1:00:53 Where can people find out more about LitBit? 1:05:15 How to get in contact with Scott 1:06:27 What is the backdrop to your laptop? 1:07:55 Scotts advice to newcomers in the industry 1:09:36 What an unpopular opinion you have? 1:11:08 What is a common misnomer about the industry? 1:19:07As the CTO and co-founder of an IT firm focused on delivering bleeding edge services to law firms, Jason was one of my first clients when I joined the industry. He quickly became one of my favorite clients when he routinely asked hard questions and held both himself, his team and his providers (me included) accountable. I knew every time we talked that I would walk away learning something important and having gained a more complete and honest picture of how his business, and my own business for that matter, actually worked. After a few acquisitions, Jason stepped away from the industry to travel the world and author a book, "The Art of Troubleshooting". His book is one I have gifted frequently to current clients and partners over the past few years and I was thrilled to talk with him about the lessons he learned as an IT executive, entrepreneur and career problem solver.…

1:27:01There are only a few dozen people on the planet, still working today, who both understand how the internet was originally developed and were actually present and involved during its early evolution. Tim Pozar is among this respected and elite tribe. Our interview attempts to add color to these early days as we follow his vast career and the decisions he made pre and post running the first ISP in San Francisco and his work with Alexa and The Internet Archive. Tim is a genuine and humble technologist, problem solver and entrepreneur through and through. Today, he works to solve complex network problems for enterprises large and small while also running the San Francisco Metropolitan Internet Exchange. Unfortunately we did not have time to cover even a fraction of the projects he's been involved with over the years, or discuss the countless hours he has spent pro-bono working to bring the freedom of the internet to every nook and cranny of Northern California. Our story here is a bit unique as it focuses on the infrastructure providers that were responsible for supporting the growth during this era and how they were affected by the $Billions to Bankruptcy phenomenon. Coming from engineering roots, Sean's perspective is unique through all this. The lessons learned helped spawn his current data center venture Colovore, and we get to hear the complete journey Sean and his partner followed to grow the company from inception to success.…

1:15:36In this week’s I Love Data Centers episode - Data Center Trials, Fiber Optics, and House Music - Sean’s guest is Garrick Sturgill, the Director or Technology, Carrier Relations and Colo Operations at Centeris Data Centers based in Puyallup, WA, just south of Seattle. First, Sean explores the three main threads within Garrick’s early and eclectic life (because it's just that interesting); creating with 1980’s computer hardware, working as a Cyberpunk community DJ at tech savvy parties in Seattle, and learning how to work with fiber optics. Next, you'll hear how these threads merged, eventually connecting Garrick into the broader world of the data center marketplace. Once inside the data center marketplace, Garrick experienced numerous trials by fire at the Westin Building Exchange (WBX), which has serves as the primary Internet Exchange in the Pacific Northwest. Finally, Sean helps introduce you to Garrick’s inner geek and how it grew into the ultimate geek job of playing with all the cooling, power and network infrastructure that makes a data center work. Garrick and Sean also explore Big Brother's role in the data center marketplace, although an attempt was made to keep the conversation light, because Big Brother is always listening.…
