Episode 43: Can You Hold Some For Me?
Manage episode 381788141 series 3436488
What we not fuxing with today is closing off our sources of support. Before we can close them off, we have to know they are available to us. The transition in season, as we move through the latter part of autumn, brings days that get darker earlier and perhaps some angst about the upcoming holidays. These are time periods for some that may be sources of sadness and stress, yet in that time of need, the Uppity Black Woman may block the help - the unburdening of that load of stress and sadness. In Jada Pinkett Smith's new memoir Worthy, she describes the inner "hellfire" she experienced while wearing her shiny veneer of Uppity Black Woman. With all the resources in the world available to her, there was a time she did not lean on her supports. Jada references the guidepost of PTSD, the "named thing" that instigated her inner "hellfire." This forces me to consider how many of us are walking around without knowing what our "named things" are.
This third therapy journey for me has given me a "named thing" - anxiety. Something I did not know that I officially had, but I do, and guess what, there is help for that, support for that. How many of us are walking around without knowing that it is our named thing that causes us to do what we do? Our sources of support can help carry some of the burdens of our named things. And when we reference sources of support, these are our care teams, including medical professionals, therapists, family (both blood and adopted), and friends. The safe spaces where we can wear our true faces. The safe spaces that allow us to be authentic, even when in pain. This is a quandary for the Uppity Black Woman because this is exactly what makes her the Uppity Black Woman, she can handle it all, she is unbreakable, but yet inside is hellfire, and no one knows. So she moves further into being disconnected, and we are all very clear as to where that road leads.
So Sis, who can you give your burden to? Do they know they are a holder of some of your load? If no, tell someone today.
