Lori Kido Lopez on Micro Media Innovations in Hmong American Communities
Manage episode 314861934 series 2132573
This week Henry & Colin are joined by Lori Kido Lopez, Professor of Media and Cultural Studies and Director of the Asian American Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, to discuss her new book, Micro Media Industries: Hmong American Media Innovation in the Diaspora. Lopez shares some background on this little-known ethnic community’s place in the U.S. and how their unique media ecologies serve their needs. We also consider the many innovations in format, genre, and technology that have developed where traditional media outlets would not be viable for this relatively small population with a largely oral culture, notably the use of teleconference lines that serve effectively as 24-hour radio stations. With a mix of participatory and broadcast media thriving outside of a commercial revenue model, there is a lot to consider about the future of the mass-market media landscape.
