The ancient city and the story of the Tower Babel. 1 of the most infamous stories in history. In this episode me and my father Pat Lawinger tackle the CONFUSING story of this ancient city and people. I'll provide some notes and resources below:Links:- A video outlining the possible appearance and location of the tower: [Watch Video](https://youtu.be/cYc_VgjJfw8?si=86edTw2dNUxJ1_RJ)- The documentary clip "Who Are The Chinese": [Watch Video](https://youtu.be/Gb4e1dQRJT0)- Josephus's "Antiquity of Jews," Chapter 4, from "The Works of Josephus"- An article on Alexander the Great and Babel: [Read Article](https://www.quora.com/What-was-in-Alexander-the-Greats-mind-when-he-razed-the-Tower-of-Babel-and-other-great-monuments)- Information on Nebuchadnezzar's restoration of the towerhttps://armstronginstitute.org/125-nebuchadnezzars-tower-of-babel/printNotes: The genealogies in the Bible are complex and non-linear, making it challenging to pinpoint when Nimrod, associated with the Tower of Babel, lived. The story is set in Mesopotamia/Shinar, part of ancient Babylon, which was divided into Sumer in the south and Akkadia in the north, present-day Iraq. Some suggest Babel was in the city of Babe(u)l, while others propose Eridu in Sumer. The cities of Ur and Uruk in Sumer, meaning "city/dwelling place," highlight the people's disobedience to God's command to spread out and fill the Earth. Sumer was known for its deviant spirituality and violence. The book of Jasher notes that Abram, while living in Ur, confronted widespread idolatry, consistent with the city's known history. The book of Jasher is referenced in the Bible (Josh 10:12-13, 2 Sam 1:18-27), adding credibility to its account. In addition when speaking of the city Ur, it can be further corroborated that there was a tower in the city of Ur dedicated to the moon god. Nimrod’s genealogy and suggests he might be known by different names in various cultures. Some theories connect Nimrod with the Near Eastern god Marduk, Enmerker, Ur-Nammu, King Sargon, or Naram-Sin, suggesting these figures might represent Nimrod in Sumer and Akkad traditions. The sons of god could be the descendants of Cain, and human groups that exhort themselves over others, who gave birth to the Nephilim, which were the mighty ancestors of godlike figures. It's no wonder that they were was renown (had a name for themselves) and were feared by many. This isn't too far off as in this article, it talks about the biblical and Sumerian connection of deification, which could link even before the flood in genealogies. https://armstronginstitute.org/886-eridu-the-bibles-first-city-and-the-family-of-cain-archaeological-parallels-to-the-biblical-accountAnother popular conclusion is that Nimrod is Gilgamesh or the King Uruk, which also makes sense that this could have been the case, since the story lines up with not to long after a flood account. I’ve even seen suggestions that he was (in the Midrash) considering that it’s suggestion that HAM-mu-RABBI means “Ham the Great One”. One last point is no wonder it’s hard to do research. There was some intense confusion that began occurring and who knows what kind of confusion it quickly led to with the story surrounding the events as they all broke off and started telling their own versions in their own languages. God isn’t trying to teach us to learn about and discover their ways as if they are the secret keys; instead, it’s clear that the story in scripture is intended to teach you not to fall into the same trap as them. The same problem is present with them that we’ve been talking about the entire time, they weren’t listening to God, and they clearly didn’t trust him. This led to their rebellion and downfall.
