As of my last knowledge update in and coming into January 2025, the physical requirements for a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam for commercial drivers in the United States typically include the following aspects:

  1. Vision: Commercial drivers are required to have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction. They should also have a field of vision of at least 70 degrees horizontally in each eye.
  2. Hearing: Drivers should be able to perceive a forced whisper at a distance of at least 5 feet without the use of a hearing aid. They are also required to pass a hearing test.
  3. Blood Pressure: Blood pressure should be below 140/90. If it is between 140/90 and 159/99, the driver may be certified for a shorter duration.
  4. Urinalysis: A urinalysis may be conducted to check for underlying health conditions and to test for controlled substances.
  5. Physical Examination: A general physical examination is performed to assess overall health, including the respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems.
  6. Medical History: Drivers are required to provide a thorough medical history, including information on past surgeries, current medications, and any medical conditions.

It's important to note that these requirements may change, and specific regulations can vary by jurisdiction. Additionally, the physical requirements may differ for different classes of commercial driver's licenses (CDL) and the type of driving activities (e.g., interstate vs. intrastate).

To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is recommended to consult the official FMCSA website or contact a certified medical examiner who is knowledgeable about the current DOT physical requirements. Regulations can change, and it's crucial for drivers to stay informed and ensure compliance with the latest standards.

We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
