Social media has become central to many of our lives — even moreso as COVID restrictions have prevented us from meeting and organizing in person. But even before the pandemic, much of feminist activism had moved online. Hashtag movements were receiving wide coverage in the media and the idea of being able to easily connect with women all around the world and share our voices and experiences widely seemed almost revolutionary. But was social media actually a gift to feminism? Or a curse?
Jessica Megarry is a lecturer in Political Science at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is also the author of The Limitations of Social Media Feminism: No space of our own. I spoke with her recently via Skype.
