Eric and Jay will wax philosophical about the tangible and practical benefits of our most sacred institution-- how has marriages changed from sacrament to contract over the many thousand years, and what interest does the state have in it's preservation? To the cynic, control and taxation but traditionalists say it's the foundational core of the nuclear family, which poses the largest threat to the power of the state. And what of the rights of women? In ancient times a married woman was property, but now marriage protects her rights, not the least of which is financial security and the disincentivizing of desertion. Is love necessary for staying in a marriage, or will marriage keep you in love?
