Epi 211 :: Secret Seven :: ICON Series w/ John T Chapman & Lillian Patterson
Manage episode 320097324 series 1744432
Talking history while sipping Smoked Old Fashion.
The Secret Seven were a group of African American activists who worked, often behind the scenes, to help integrate Alexandria, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s, countering Virginia's massive resistance against integrating schools. Fortunately, their activism pushed Alexandria forward when the city’s leadership was still averse to change — who obviously hadn’t met John T. Chapman.
In the second episode of our four-part ICON Series, guest host John Taylor Chapman welcomes Lillian Patterson – educator, historian, fourth-generation Alexandrian, and wife of Edward Patterson, a member of the Secret Seven. John and Lillian discuss this invisible force of strong-willed parents who fought for better schools, housing, and representation in their local community. It’s proof that sometimes just a few determined people can do great things. Now that deserves a listen, and a toast!
