Epi 210 :: 1939 Library Sit-In :: ICON Series w/ John T Chapman & Rose Dawson
Manage episode 319460748 series 1744432
Talking history while sipping Toki Highballs.
On a warm August afternoon in 1939, Alexandria (Va.) Library staff and patrons watched as a young African American entered and asked to register for a library card. When he was refused, he bravely picked up a book, took a seat, and began to read. This bold act was the beginning of one of America's first sit-ins and one of the earliest precursors of the strategies used during the civil rights movement decades later.
In the first epi of our four-part ICON Series, guest host John Taylor Chapman – Alexandria’s Night Mayor and local historian – welcomes Rose T. Dawson, Exe. Dir. of the Alexandria Library. Tune in for a lively and empowering conversation about this pioneering use of nonviolent direct action to demand equal rights for African Americans. Talking history while sipping cocktails — you’ve never had a history class like this!
