Hats off to this homegrown lady! Penny grew up in Redlands and it's fun to hear what kind of things she did there as a teenager. Always drawn to radio, Lecturer Drake-Green achieved her Associate of Arts degree in Radio-Television from San Bernardino Valley College but there was some years in the carnival thrown in there! Miss Penny, as the students affectionately call her, made her way to Cal State San Bernardino where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Communication Studies (now called The Department of Communication and Media). Penny is a CSUSB veteran and continues to teach the radio practica course at the campus radio station, Coyote Radio. And when you listen to her podcast, you'll agree - she definitely has a voice for radio!

I know you'll enjoy this pleasant half-hour with Kelly. Who knew daydreaming could be so rewarding in one's life? She delivers her succinct profile with humor and insight as a relationship expert might do! Dr. Campbell is also a Professor of Psychology at CSUSB. In fact, she used to host a talk show on Coyote Radio called "Let's Talk Relationships" which I co-engineered at the campus radio station. I liked hearing about her grocery shopping trips and that was an unexpected random road we went down. It is a fun listen! Here is her bio as listed on our university website: Bio Kelly Campbell is CSUSB’s Vice Provost, Accreditation Liaison Officer, and a Co-Chief Diversity Officer, representing Academic Affairs. She oversees academic programs, curriculum development, strategic planning, the academic master plan, annual assessment, program review, WSCUC institutional accreditation, specialized program accreditation, academic success and undergraduate advising, Graduate Studies, the Office of Academic Research, University Libraries (Pfau Library and Palm Desert campus), academic scheduling, the Office of Community Engagement, the General Education Program, University Honors Programs, Writing Intensive Program, and the university calendar. She first joined CSUSB as an assistant professor of psychology in 2008, progressed through the tenure and promotion process, and was serving as a full professor prior to assuming her current positions. Professor Carlson has a charming way of delivering his background and his stories. His tales read like a captivating short story! And he knows a little bit about reading and writing. Most people from central Massachusetts wouldn't care to find themselves plopped down in the Inland Empire but David found it to be the perfect fit for him and his family. It was my pleasure to interview Professor Oregel. I loved hearing about his youth in Boyle Heights, the history, the theaters and the ghost stories. We are lucky to have him as part of our campus community! In this podcast Roberto discusses his recent documentary "Foxtrot: Operation Reunification." Oregel is an independent filmmaker who has been writing, directing and producing documentary films for 18 years. His works represent a variety of film genres, including experimental, narrative, and documentary and deal with a range of subjects, from the creative process to the issues that impact underrepresented communities. The themes of social justice and human relations run through his films. Oregel’s first films were in the Experimental genre. Downtown L.A. (2002) premiered at the Disney’s Redcat Theater as part of a curated show titled Independent Los Angeles and Racing Thoughts (2003) premiered at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. His interest in art led him to his next film, Gronk’s Tormenta: A Method (2002), which screened at the Carnegie Art Museum, Boston Latino International Film festival and in Italy at the ASOLO film festival. In 2004, Oregel was one of five filmmakers chosen by Showtime Network to produce and direct films related to war. His film, Dominance and Terror: A discussion with Noam Chomsky, was nationally televised on Showtime and shown at festivals across the country. Oregel’s first feature documentary, Casa Libre/Freedom House, was produced in collaboration with the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. Oregel’s latest film, Eloy Take Two (2010), has been screened at several festivals across the country. In this film, Oregel collaborates with muralist, Eloy Torrez and actor/art collector, Cheech Marin. He is currently working on his next documentary, Noam Chomsky: Seeds of Revolution . Dr. Girshin earned his PhD in Composition and Rhetoric from Binghamton University. His research focuses predominantly on composition pedagogy, writing assessment, and the rhetoric of exile. His current research project analyzes the rhetorical strategies of Soviet Gulag prisoners in their letters home. Before coming to CSUSB, Dr. Girshin was Assistant Professor of Writing and Director of First-Year Writing at Ithaca College in upstate New York. Folks from the Inland Empire mostly associate Barstow as a stop on the way to Las Vegas. But for Professor Getman, this is her hometown where she began her musical journey. Alicia Escobedo, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is a graduate of the San Diego State University/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorders. Her research focuses on typical and atypical language development in bilingual children through community-based research methods. Alicia recently completed her Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. Her dissertation work was funded by an NIH F31 Ruth L. Dr. Julie Taylor is not an idle person! She teaches many courses in Communication & Media with a specialization in Organizational Communication. She is also the Department's Faculty Advisor. In addition, Julie is the Co-Director at The Speaking Center at JHBC (the CSUSB business college). During our interview you learn about her upbringing in lovely Colorado. Does that make her "outdoorsy?" Listen and she'll go over that fun fact. For someone who didn't like school, Dr. Taylor stayed on through her Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees with encouragement from advisors. That's why she believes faculty advisors are crucial to a student's success. And perhaps it's why she was awarded the "Outstanding Faculty Advisor" for the 2023-2024 academic year at Cal State University, San Bernardino. What an honor! To learn more about Dr. Julie Taylor, here's an excerpt from her bio on her research and teaching interests: As a teacher and scholar, my role is not that of an expert but one of a guide, mentor, and facilitator. My duties in the classroom are several -- to reveal alternatives; embrace difference and dialogue; engage students and guide them where I can; figure out the tough stuff together, and finally, bring them to a place beyond where I can go with them and give them courage to go there. Journeys in class are therefore infused with three central commitments – rigor, creativity and compassion. To this end, I operate a ‘fully informed’ pedagogy. Students have assignments and evaluation criteria in advance, as well as access to me as a draft reader, learning resource, study skills developer, confidante, mentor, and guide. All work is work in process and progress; however, I believe that every student is capable of producing excellent work if they remain committed to rigor, creativity and compassion. Broadly, my research interests include organizational communication, discourse, interdisciplinary studies, and gender. One area of research is dedicated to questions of social justice and issues concerning meaningful work for humanity. A second area of research is around interdisciplinary studies with a focus on communication instruction. This research line explores how instructors could be more purposeful and effective teachers in creating life-long learners and critically engaged citizens in various disciplines. In all, my focus is in exploring and conceptualizing ways to make a learning experience more beneficial to students and their world by preparing engaged thinkers.…

Hats off to this homegrown lady! Penny grew up in Redlands and it's fun to hear what kind of things she did there as a teenager. Always drawn to radio, Lecturer Drake-Green achieved her Associate of Arts degree in Radio-Television from San Bernardino Valley College but there was some years in the carnival thrown in there! From his CSUSB bio: Dr. Kirk Kanesaka is an Assistant Professor of Japanese and Asian Studies. His specialty is in premodern Japanese literature and theater. In particular the emergence of early modern (1603-1900) popular fiction and kabuki/bunraku theater. In addition, because of his specialty in the performing arts, his research interests span beyond the premodern into the contemporary, examining fan culture and popular culture and their influences upon the performing and visual arts. Professor Wasserstein is the latest addition to the wonderful Department of English at CSUSB. Is it something about people from the Midwest that makes them inherently nice and polite? I don’t know but she is both! Izzy was born and raised in Kansas. She’s the author of two poetry collections, This Ecstasy They Call Damnation and When Creation Falls, the short story collection All the Hometowns You Can't Stay Away From (a Lambda Literary Award finalist), and the forthcoming novella These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart (Tachyon, 2024). My home includes a dog and two cats. I'm a queer and trans woman, a lover of bad jokes, and a nerd. Her education includes a B.A., Washburn University in Kansas and a M.F.A., University of New Mexico. This is an entertaining and informative episode with Dr. Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez. It's an understatement to say that Guillermo is colorful, intelligent, funny and a deep thinker. He is all that and more as he adds his depth and style to the Department of Theatre Arts here at Cal State San Bernardino. Guillermo holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah, a Master of Fine Arts from UC San Diego and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Guillermo grew up in Watts and holds the distinction of being the first Chicana/o ever to star in a main-stage production at the University of Utah. Some of Guillermo's directorial and literary highlights include two commissions from Center Theatre Group to write Student Discovery Guides for En Un Sol Amarillo and Culture Clash's Palestine, New Mexico. Guillermo has collaborated with Spanish-speaking theatre groups in the U.S. including Grupo malayerba from Ecuador, Yuyachkani from Peru, and Teatro de los andes from Bolivia. During this episode on the College of Arts and Letters Podcast Series we spend time with Miriam Fernandez, PhD who recently received her promotion to Professor in the CSUSB English Department. What is the difference between writing and composition? This expert puts it plain and easy to understand and practice. Her stance? Everyone can write! Her current research focuses on Chicanx rhetorical practices and the rhetorical uses of Llorona storytelling. One of her research projects looks at the uses of epideictic rhetoric among Chicanas in the 1970s and 1980s as they reshaped the meaning of a Chicana feminist identity and claimed a feminist heritage going back to the colonization of Mexico. Another project she is currently working on analyzes the rhetorical purposes of Llorona storytelling. This project is an oral history project that records Mexican and Chicanx people's memories of hearing the Llorona story and analyzes the reasons why people choose to retell the story or to stop sharing the story with new generations. One of her teaching interests is in the structure and writing of researched arguments. Dr. Fernandez likes to work with students as they analyze how arguments are structured in academic and public or popular texts and guide them as they write their own arguments. My second teaching interest is in the intersection of rhetorical studies and public sphere theories.
