The Anti-Federalists, including figures like Patrick Henry, George Clinton, and Elbridge Gerry, opposed the stronger central government proposed by the Constitution, advocating instead for decentralized power and individual liberties.

Often mislabeled, they were the true federalists, warning of the risks posed by a powerful federal government. Their prescient critiques led to the inclusion of the Bill of Rights and cemented their place in America’s decentralist, conservative tradition.
