“Hello and welcome to the Coffee & Hustle podcast; this is the episode we are going to describe, “How marketing looks now vs. then.”

I’m Carla with Coffee & Hustle, and joining me on this podcast discussion today is Vicki Morris, Owner of Face to Face Marketing.
Vicki has over 20 years of marketing and communications experience. You are a leader in the Huntsville area that helps businesses tailor marketing strategies, and you and your team do this using a data-driven and analytical approach. You provide business owners plan of action to focus on marketing that converts and builds valued customers.

Thank you for joining Vicki; give us a little background on how you got started in marketing.

I want to point out that we are both in the same industry. Do you ever feel this industry is getting crowded? No. There is more business in our area than any one person or company can handle. And we each have slightly different client avatars because we each specialize in different things or audience segments.

What was your favorite thing about marketing back when you started? What has been the most challenging transition? My favorite thing has always been bringing clarity to a client’s messaging strategy! When I first realized I could make money doing marketing, I was at a networking event talking about an event I organized and sharing the flyer I designed. To see that people understood what I was conveying, and they clearly saw how the offer could help them with a current or future pain point. Then people came up to me asking if I could do the same thing for them and their business.

The most challenging transition as I grew my business has surprisingly been promoting myself.

Were you self-taught? Back in the day, we did not have the lessons or classes available to us. So how did you learn how to focus on your skills?

I have a degree in marketing, so I learned a lot of fundamentals in college, like strategy planning, SWOT, and other analysis builders; I learned a lot about writing in college, and I got really good at it. But website design, graphic design, photography, and video editing were all self-taught through trial and error and self-study.

Name three things that improve your marketing focus. Diving deep into the client's industry, building out a client avatar for the client, sending clients very detailed questionnaires before I begin working on projects them.

I want to mention that you offer courses and training at Face to Face Marketing. How has that changed your business? What is the one thing that you love about this course? It makes high-quality marketing affordable for all businesses.

Did this transition in your business during COVID, or was this something you always wanted to offer? COVID certainly accelerated the timing of this new segment of my business, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a couple of years

You seem to enjoy the learning aspect, and you always seem ve
