Tim Elliott, an ancient historian researching populist politics in the Roman Republic, was my guest on today’s show. We had a really interesting conversation discussing an article he wrote that alludes to comparisons between the late Roman Republic and the current state of US politics, most intriguingly between Donald Trump and Julius Caesar. We explored the ideas of populism, the sources of populist support, the degradation of our institutions, and whether there is anything we can learn from looking at historical precedents.
