Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 70 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 16 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In a Super Rugby Pacific semifinal upset for many, which we predicted - the Chiefs knocked over the Hurricanes in Wellington, scoring two early tries and hanging on for a great 30-19 win.
Rising star, Wallace Sititi was outstanding at No. 8 and flyhalf Damian McKenzie contributed 15 points with a perfect afternoon from the kicking tee as the Chiefs won a Super Rugby playoff on the road for the first time at their fifth attempt.
They will be chasing a third Super Rugby title next Saturday at Eden Park against the Blues, who outmuscled the ACT Brumbies 34-20 in the first semi-final on Friday.
In rugby league: Michael Jennings danced his way through the line of his former Club, to score for the Sydney Roosters to stave off the Parramatta Eels comeback; beating Trent Barrett’s side 18-28 at CommBank Stadium in a thriller last night.
In other NRL games played last night: Wests Tigers 18-10 Gold Coast Titans at Leichhardt Oval and the NZ Warriors 24-38 Melbourne Storm at Go Media Stadium.
Our world famous tips for the NRL today - Manly Sea Eagles to zonk St George Illawarra Dragons at 4 Pines Park and Newcastle Knights pip Penrith Panthers at McDonald Jones Stadium.
In Football: The result for the opening game of EURO 2024: Germany thrashed Scotland 1-5 as the EURO 2024 hosts kicked off the tournament in style in Munich yesterday.
In other results: Hungary 1-3 Switzerland in Cologne, Spain 3-0 Croatia in Berlin.
Today we tip Italy to alamo Albania in Dortmund, Poland to poopoo Netherlands in Hamburg, Denmark to dojo Slovenia in Stuttgart and Serbia to shampoo England in Gelsenkirchen.
In SportsBiz: Wimbledon is offering record prize money for the upcoming 2024 tournament. The All England Club will pay out US$64Million in prize money for the event starting 01 July, an 11.9% increase from last year.
Wimbledon singles winners will receive US$3.45M each, up from $3 million last year, while first round singles losers depart with US$76,636 each.
Last year’s boost in the Wimbledon prize fund was soon followed by a rise for the 2023 US Open prize pool to US$65M, plus increases in per-diem allowances, travel assistance and hotel allotments for players.
The 2024 Australian Open offered a record US$57.5M prize pool, while the recently completed French Open awarded US$57.7M.
In the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup: The USA has reached the Last Eight in their debut appearance in the T20 World Cup, with Pakistan, finalists in the tournament two years ago heading back home.
Afghanistan beat Papua New Guinea to also advance to the Last Eight, together with tournament co-hosts West Indies, while New Zealand has also crashed out with two group games to play.
In the NBA: No team has ever come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win the NBA playoffs.
Can the Dallas Mavericks be the first to do it in the NBA Finals?
This, after they completely dominated the Boston Celtics 84-122 in Game 4 and in so doing, claiming the third-biggest win in NBA Finals history on the back of some big D.
It remains to be seen whether that is the case, or if the Celtics just let game 04 slip so that they can close out the finals at home in Boston next Tuesday.
Go the Mavs!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
