Hey BikeRumor Fans - Welcome to Episode 109! Ep - 109: Gravel, gear, and getting to the start line. Jordan sits down with professional gravel race extraordinaire Alexey Vermeulen and Pearl Izumi product line manager Lani Benson. They unpack how gravel gear (especially kit and outerwear) has evolved along with the sport's progression. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. It's not all gear and geeking out. However, the conversation moves into the "real meaning" of gravel. Why would someone subject themselves to a grueling (yet fun) 10-hour day on the bike? Importantly, how that day on the bike might not vibe with the most obvious gear choice. For example, the super lightweight stiff-soled gear the professionals are racing might not be the best for you. The group discusses their favorite pieces of gravel (and all-around kit) from the newest Pearl Izumi offerings and Alexey's never-ending love for the Attak Barrier jacket. Will Pearl Izumi possibly return to higher footwear? Their newest offering, the Expedition Pro shoes, looks promising, but they need that extra push—and that could be coming. Lastly, it wouldn't be a podcast with Alexey if we didn't discuss the dog in the room: Willy. We talk about how he became so comfortable on the bike and how he (Willy) trains. What's the longest ride Willy does? Listen to find out! Check out all the gear and more at PearlIzumi.com . Want More? Welcome to BikeRumor Podcast #106 How to Conquer Cold Weather Cycling and Crush Your Winter Rides This episode covers cold-weather cycling and how to dress best for success when the temperature drops. Jordan chats with Lani Benson and Matt Kent from Pearl Izumi. We start with the basics of dressing for winter riding and quickly get to the specifics of how to get the most from your gear. If the weather near you is getting colder and the trainer is looking more and more tempting, chill out (by grabbing a coffee or snack) and listen to this podcast. We start with the laying basics as a refresher and introduction for new all-year-round outdoor cyclists. Next, we move into how to build a kit for your type of rider and training needs. Then, we move on to mid-layers and shells, gloves, and shoe covers. Finally, we wrap up with all the tips and tricks Pearl Izumi learns from working with the best cycling athletes from around the world. Lani and Matt have so much information on the technical aspects of winter layering that we could have talked for two hours or more. But don't worry — they'll be back in spring with a special guest! Podcast Episode 103: A Guide to Practical Gravel Race Fueling We'll be the first to admit it: Fueling for long events is challenging, especially if you don’t have a game plan or it's your first event. With the rise of longer and more intense gravel races and events, proper fueling is more critical than ever. A Guide to Gravel Race Fueling This conversation isn’t just for first-timers or elite gravel grinders; it's for everyone. I’ve often gotten my fueling strategy wrong, and I still do sometimes (and I’ve been at this for years). Whether it was not eating enough, not eating the right food, or the dreaded “I’ll eat later” followed by a dreaded BONK and vision quest for the finish line. We can all work on our fueling for training and racing, no matter how many races we have under our belt. For BikeRumor Podcast Episode 103, I sat down with the Fuel Good Nutrition (formerly Rider Box) team to dispel fueling myths and clarify what a race nutrition plan can look like. So, should I eat as many gels as I can? No, this isn’t a laundry list of 20 gels and 50 blocks for over 250k of racing. It's a real-food and practical look at what riders can do (and stomach) to achieve the most from their training. From Training to Race Day We discuss what a fueling plan looks like from the very start. We look at the week leading up to the big event (gravel race in our scenario) and forward from there. We are tackling not only what but also how to get in the correct amount of carbs and other fuels to stay robust and fresh over your ride. After the race, you need to replenish, recover, and rebuild. We discuss re-fueling, recovery meals, drinks, and strategies so you can be stronger in the next race. WANT MORE? Jordan sits down and talks about all things Lefty with Cannondale Factory Racing (CFR) and the suspension team at Cannondale. Steve Exstance, Murray Washburn, and Lefty Larry walk us through the conception, progression, and even electrification of Cannondale's Lefty line. Larry was kind enough to meet us at the CFR headquarters and described the "day in the life" of a CFR team member and how all the moving parts behind wins work in tandem. We cover how the team dials in their suspension for different course demands and rider styles and what it's like servicing multiple Lefties while traveling worldwide. Plus, we get the insider scoop and some secret tips from Lefty Larry for setup, lockout and the team answers reader questions. So, if you're a Cannondale fanatic or a rider looking to get a peek behind the scenes of World Cup life, this episode is a must-listen! WANT MORE? Silca's Josh Poertner gets his new product ideas from the craziest places. Take the new Strip Chips, for example. These hot melt chain wax additives were inspired by the food industry, where they're trying to find a replacement for trans fats and hydrogenated oils. Turns out, they can make it a whole lot easier to wax your chain, too! In this episode, we geek out on how that product works, the nuances of wax temperatures for proper chain waxing, and talk a lot about where his ideas come from, what else he's excited about, and why his stuff costs more than everyone else's. I always love talking to Josh, and I think you're going to really enjoy this one, too. WANT MORE? While at the launch for the new Fox GRIP dampers, I pretty much had my brain melted by VP of engineering Bill Brown as he explained their inner workings. So, naturally, I brought him on the show here to run through it again. The level of fluid dynamics and engineering discussed is still well above my pay grade, but I think we do a pretty good of of explaining how the new dampers are able to simultaneously offer more support and be more sensitive to small bumps. It's all about pressure balancing, and we go deep on it. If you've always run your suspension wide open so it's as comfortable as possible, you may want to listen in. The new GRIP dampers provide better, faster damping so you have more control with less harshness. And they work phenomenally well. Get ready to geek out! WANT MORE? If you've ever wondered how route creation and ride mapping works, you're going to love this episode. My guest is Eric Semianczuk, co-founder of Sherpa Map. I'm guessing you haven't heard of them… yet. But the cycling route map service they're building is incredible, using AI and granular LIDAR data compiled over weather, surface type, and elevation data to create the most sophisticated route data you can imagine. And they just keep improving it. It's wild, and in this episode, Eric explains how they got started, how mapping and route building works, and how they're using AI to predict everything from surface type to how many calories you'll need and even advise on tire selection for your next race. So, apparently, not every cheap e-bike sucks after all. Until recently I was firmly in the camp that cheap, hub-motor e-bikes with cadence sensors were all terrible and unsafe. Then I talked to Kevin Dugger, founder of Ride1Up e-bikes, and he changed my mind. It's not so much the bikes that bugged me, although we'll talk about that, too, it was the cadence sensors that told the motor to start going. It turns out, there's a lot more to the " on " of " off " systems of the early days or the cheapest bikes. Also, it turns out there are also some really good use cases for hub motors and cadence sensors, and that their performance, or lack thereof, really comes down to how their controllers are programmed. Kevin and I get into the details of what makes a good cadence sensor system, when you might want one instead of a torque sensor mid-drive bike, and lots of other interesting details about making e-bikes affordable without sacrificing quality and safety. If you're in the market for an e-bike but have a small budget, you'll definitely want to listen to this one. WANT MORE? Recently, I had a chance to meet with BMC and Red Bull's Advanced Technology Team to learn about and ride their new Teammachine R , a top level, lightweight aero road racing bike. But I left with questions, so in this episode I have Stefan Christ from the BMC product team and Rob Gray, technical director at Red Bull Advanced Technologies on board to discuss how they applied F1 technologies to a bike, what they learned about aerodynamics, and more. We even touch on drive by wire systems and the potential for wireless or electronic brakes. I wasn't really sure what I was going to talk about with my guest today, but it ended up being a wonderfully deep dive into speed, power development and strength training. If you want to get into the weeds on how to get faster and stronger on the bike, you'll love this episode. My guest is Thomson Remo, lead educator for Watt Bike's professional division. Watt Bike makes a very smart, precise indoor bike that's used by USA Cycling and the UCI for talent identification, and their professional division supplies gyms and professional sporting teams around the world. Thomson develops the protocols used to measure fitness and power, and in this episode talks about what metrics matter, how to effectively combine resistance and cadence, and what training, lifting, and speed workouts specifically translate into riding faster and longer. We hear so much about inclusivity these days, but not usually when it comes to our mountain bike trails. Turns out, it's not that hard to make our trails more accessible to a wider range of riders, letting all of your friends enjoy the same awesome experience you and I enjoy every time we hit the singletrack. Besides the warm fuzzies, there's often good money and resources available to help make it happen, too! My guests today are Nick Bennett and Greg Durso, two of the riders and trail builders leading Vermont's charge to make more of their hundreds of miles of singletrack accessible to adaptive riders. I've ridden some of these trails, and they're awesome. But what makes them super rad is that every rider can enjoy them, and trust me, they are not watered down in any way. If you've ever wondered what it would take to make your local trails adaptive bike friendly, or what it's like to experience a trail from their perspective, this episode is for you. Be sure to check the links in this episode's show notes at Bikerumor.com/podcast for resources and their instagram profiles to see the bikes and trails in action. WANT MORE? If you've ever wondered what it's like to start a cycling clothing brand, and not just any brand, but a really cool brand, you'll love this episode. There are a lot of candid conversations that happen when industry folks get together, and one of my favorite people to chat with is Randall Jacobs, founder of Thesis Bikes and Logos components. Before he launched those brands, he worked for others and helped develop some interesting technologies that you may or may not see in future products. Whether you do or don't isn't the point, though, it's really about why you haven't seen them already. There's a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes of product development, and in this episode we talk about how things work, why bikes aren't as advanced as they could be, and why the patent process really needs an overhaul. This one might rattle a few cages, but I think you're going to really enjoy this inside look at the bike industry. WANT MORE? Sometimes, I get guests on the show because they're with a brand that's in the news, or there's a technical story that needs an expert opinion. And sometimes, it's just to have a conversation with someone cool. My guest today is former pro roadie Ian Boswell, and he definitely falls into that latter category, although he does have a few things coming up that you may want to check out. We talk about how he transitioned from racing full-time at the highest level to working a "9-5 gig" with Wahoo, and then he reveals not one but two different gravel events he's part of, and an experimental bikepacking weekend that might turn into something much bigger. IAN'S SOCIAL & EVENT LINKS Check out Ian's Instagram to keep up with his latest adventures, and check out the Bici Bucerias Gravel Camp in Mexico and his Peacham Fall Fondo if you'd like to join him on a ride! A little while back, Parlee Cycles filed for bankruptcy protection and seemed like another big brand suffering the consequences of the pandemic boom and bust. But now they're back, with a new owner, new ideas, and fresh funding. My guest today is John Harrison, a long-time Parlee fan and tech turnaround guy that saw an opportunity to breathe new life into the legendary drop bar brand. We talk about what led to Parlee's bankruptcy, what they learned from it, and more importantly where the brand is headed and what new bikes are on the horizon! It's a great chat, and if you're a fan of the brand like I am, it's definitely a big sigh of relief to see that they're building a company that's focused on smart growth and continuing their heritage of premium bikes and forward-thinking designs. You may have noticed something weird that launched, something unexpected. Moots, long known for their high-end titanium bicycles surprised everyone with a carbon fiber gravel e-bike, using a frame material they've never used before, and adding a motor for the first time in their history. I talk to Nate Bradley, Moots' president and one of the key people behind the new model, about how it came to be, why they did it, and what's next for the brand. And, of course, we talk about those wild oversized 750D gravel wheels and tires they showed off at SBT and the MADE show. Check out the full tech story for more photos here: https://bikerumor.com/moots-express-carbon-e-gravel-bike/ And the 750D wheels story here: https://bikerumor.com/new-bicycle-wheel-size-moots-prototype-750d-wheels-tires-wtb/ WANT MORE? While at the new Shimano GRX 12-speed gravel bike group launch, we sat down with two team members responsible for helping bring it to life to talk about what's changed, what didn't (and why), and how the group has evolved to fit the needs of modern gravel riders. We also discuss the global gravel scene's evolution, how Shimano fits into it, and plenty of tech geekery and little details. WANT MORE? If you think mountain bike suspension is a mystery, you're not alone. From kinematics to anti-squat to compression ratios, there's a lot of terminology piled on top of designs like VPP, Horst Link, CVA, DW Link. Add CBF to that list and you have the suspension design and philosophy of Chris Canfield. He's my guest today and had been designing full suspension mountain bikes for almost 25 years. We talk about how things work, why multi-linkage bikes work well (as well as why some maybe don't work as well as others), and we try, really hard, to explain brake jack and why braking forces negatively affect suspension performance. And after all that, we talk about not one, but TWO new suspension patents he's working on that are truly wild, and he explains them publicly for the very first time, right here. WANT MORE? If you've ever thought you could make your own energy bar, or sports drink, or any other kind of athletic food, it's always good to hear how others have done it. My guest today is Jess Cerra, founder of JoJe Bar, a gluten free, real food energy bar designed for endurance athletes. She shares her startup story, telling the unlikely series of events that led to launching, building, and ultimately selling a sports nutrition brand. We also talk a little about how her upbringing and support throughout her racing career came full circle to putting on her own event that helps fund scholarships for other girls in her community. It's a fun story that, as a fellow entrepreneur, I love sharing to inspire you to follow your own dreams and see where they take you. WANT MORE? A couple episodes ago, Lachlan Morton shared his plans for an around the world record attempt. In this episode, I'm talking to someone who's actually done it. In 2018, Jenny Graham set the women's speed record for riding 18,000 miles around the world in 124 days and 11 hours. And she did it unsupported, without, well…we'll get to that, because the extent of her minimalism is pretty remarkable and I want you to hear it in her words. Her story is captured in a new book called Coffee First, Then The World, and we talk about her experience documenting the ride, how she planned for it, the equipment and challenges of keeping a bike going day in and day out, overcoming the physical challenges of such an undertaking, the opportunities it's created for her, and so much more. If you've ever wondered how tire size and rim profiles affect aerodynamics, this episode is for you! My guest is Dov Tate, founder of Parcours Wheels , a UK brand that's been pushing the envelope on wider rims optimized around wider tires. The story of how he got to that point, from putting 360º wind sensors low on the bike to intentionally doing wind tunnel tests without a bike frame attached to the wheels, is really cool. We dive pretty deep on leading edge, trailing edge, optimizing for gravel tires, and a whole lot more, with stories about how he's built his company mixed in for the entrepreneurial minded among us. There's even talk about some new wheels and where they might be headed with future product development. WANT MORE? If you've ever found yourself focusing so much on the outcome of a ride or race rather than the experience of the ride itself, I think you'll enjoy this conversation with Lachlan Morton. As one of the top ultra endurance riders in the world, Lachlan's had some grand adventures, from riding the entire 2021 Tour de France route, including transfers, solo and unsupported…and beating the peloton into Paris…to racing events like Cape Epic and Unbound. Sure, he's sponsored, and they're making content around his rides, but at the core of all of it is just enjoying the experience. His next big adventure is an attempt to race around the world and set a new record, and we talk about all of that and more before wrapping up with some advice for anyone looking to tackle their own ultra-distance or multi-day ride. I'm back with Matt Harvey from Enduro Bearings for Round Two, all about Bottom Brackets! If you haven't listened to our first chat , I recommend it as we go so deep down the rabbit hole of bearings that it'll give you a lot to think about as you're trying to optimize your bike. In this episode, we focus on Bottom Brackets because Enduro recently released a report that shows the results of years of testing many popular brands of BBs, but the numbers need some explaining. You'll find the charts and some interesting data below, along with a summary explanation to accompany the deeper dive in this interview. Alexey Vermeulen is a former pro roadie, having ridden for the BMC development team and then Lotto NL Jumbo before switching gears to gravel, where he now rides for Jukebox Print, ENVE and Shimano, among others But you might know him better as "that guy that rides with the dog on his back". I met Alexey at Sea Otter this year and, as I was going through the photos of his new custom ENVE MOG, I thought 'ya know, I bet he'd be a fun guy to have a conversation with'. So here we are. We came into this interview with no agenda, but I asked him to have a story ready to start things off, and it turned out to be a great catalyst for talking about everything from why pros aren't great at teaching amateurs, finding motivation to ride or race, and some great life lessons about, well, life. And, of course, we talk about Willie the Weiner Dog and why he started riding with his girlfriend's dog in a backpack. WANT MORE?
