Is depression and despair a sin? When a person is feeling depressed is it okay to seek physical help and therapy alongside spiritual things like prayer and the Word? There are so many questions like this that I hear on a regular basis, and while this episode in Elijah’s life does not explicitly explore all the intricacies of how we ought to interact with modern psychology it does give us helpful tools for understanding how God ministers to Elijah in his despondency. God ministers to the whole person, he cares for him physically, he interacts with him therapeutically, and he ministers to him spiritually. In doing so he pulls Elijah out of the bog of depression that was seeking to keep him stuck and sinking.
