Chains are heard, followed by ghostly moans and zombie noises* Eric: Up next, we present a special guest named, Jack. This man knows a lot about bats and he’s going to tell us all about it. Take it away, Jack! Jack: Boo! *laughter* Got you, didn’t I? I know that Halloween is coming soon, but there's a classic Halloween animal that’s probably one of the most misunderstood. Today, I’m going to tell you all about bats, but remember, don’t listen to the scary myths about them but before we can get started let me tell you something here. It’s our job- no, our duty to dispel the popular notion about them. How’s that going to help? Well, let's get started here. Bats have good eyesight. There's never a bat that’s blind. Bats aren’t really scary. The reality is they're shy and gentle creatures. They're harmless! Bats do hang by their feet. How do they do that? Bats feet hook backwards. Their toe claws are hooked so they can hang upside down while they sleep! All bats have an amazing technique called echolocation. Come on, say it with me! Echo...lo... cation! Well, let me show you how it works. When he makes a sound, like a high-pitched squeak, the sound bounces off an object and the sound comes back to the ear. To let them sense their surroundings it in fact they can detect objects as thin as a human hair in total darkness. A little brown bat can eat over 600 mosquitos in an hour! Which makes it a less itchy place here. Goodbye bug spray, hello bats! Did you know that some bats fly South for the winter? and speaking of which- from Mexico all the way to South America- The Vampire Bat! The most misunderstood bad in the world. But don't worry, vampire bats don't get blood from people. *buzzer sound* It’s just not true. Vampire bats don't get blood from people at all. See, they prefer mammals and birds native to their environments. Did you know there are about 1,100 different kinds of bats in the world! And they’re all so different! but the biggest ones are the great Indian Flying Fox and the Gold Crown Fruit bat. It’s not how you look, it’s who you are. Bats are the good guys! They’re our friends. *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff* We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. For more information, please go to our website. Ableartswork.org.
