#2 - On November 18, 1978, 918 people died on the Jonestown compound in Guyana. Jonestown was a remote settlement established by the Peoples Temple, a U.S.-based organization under the leadership of Jim Jones. Many people who lost their lives drank cyanide poisoning at the direction of Jones, who instructed them to commit "revolutionary suicide." That day, the events that took place became the most deadly single non-natural disaster in U.S. history until September 11, 2001.
