This episode dives into the significant political question posed by Ronald Reagan during the closing moments of his 1980 presidential debate with Jimmy Carter: 'Are you better off than you were four years ago?' Ken Woodward explores the context of the 1980 political climate, marked by economic difficulties, high inflation, unemployment, and international issues such as the Iran hostage crisis and concerns about U.S. global standing and nuclear threats. Reagan's question, which became iconic in U.S. political discourse, was noted for its simplicity, personal relevance, emotional resonance, and strategic timing. The question invited voters to reflect on their circumstances rather than abstract policies, ultimately contributing to Reagan's landslide victory. The episode details six crucial lessons for crafting influential questions, emphasizing audience perspective, engagement, simplicity, timing, self-reflection, and a call to action. Listeners are encouraged to consider how such questions have shaped their decisions and to apply these insights in personal and professional contexts. This Curated Questions episode can be found on all major platforms and at CuratedQuestions.com . Keep questioning! Is America as respected throughout the world as it was? Do you feel that our security is as safe, that we're as strong as we were four years ago? Where do you feel it in your body? What emotions come to the surface? What pictures race through your mind? Would it kill you to stop chewing your food with your mouth open? What is your number seven? What comes to mind? Did you feel the knee-jerk need to answer right away when your politician asked? Did you actually do the homework to determine what factors were most important to you, then look at data vice depending on emotion? Is it any easier to see why someone in a different circumstance may answer differently than you? How did the question affect your answer when the opposing politician asked it? Did you use the same metric for the candidates or give your preferred candidate extra leeway? What famous questions continue to pop up in your world?…

The Nutrient Management Guide (RB209) helps farmers make the most of organic materials and balance the benefits of fertiliser use against economic and environmental costs. The guide explains the value of nutrients, soil and why good nutrient management is about more than just the fertilisers you buy; it can save you money as well as help protect the environment. This year, the RB209 is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first publication. In this episode, AHDB's John Bates discusses with Dr Amanda Bennett, AHDB's Senior Environment Manager, who is an expert in soil health and crop nutrition. Joining the conversation is Dr Ian Richards, a member of the Fertiliser Advisers Certification & Training Scheme (FACTS) Advisory Committee, and a contributor to the first edition. Together, they shed some light on the history of the RB209, why it is important and how it looks going forward. From silaging to slurry spreading and bringing the cows in or out, the weather is a major driver of day-to-day life on British dairy farms. Last summer's unprecedented periods of hot weather will have a big impact on our cows and, if not managed effectively, will have led to more stress, lower milk production and higher rates of disease. As more extreme weather seems set to be the norm, preparing for and managing heat stress in cows will become increasingly more important. Exports drive economic growth, and every year, the UK exports around £1.5 billion worth of red meat around the globe. In 2021, more than 550,000 tonnes of sheep meat, beef, and pork were shipped (according to AHDB analysis of trade data from IHS Maritime & Trade – Global Trade Atlas – HMRC). AHDB's Market Intelligence and Exports teams are collaborating to boost exports to current markets and explore new opportunities for UK agri-food over the next decade. Dr Phil Hadley, Director of International Development at AHDB, has been discussing this activity at various events, including the recent National Farmers Union (NFU) Conference and the Annual Meat Conference in Texas. In this episode, we discuss the recent mission to the US aimed at exploring opportunities for exporting UK lamb, beef, and pork. The mission centred around the Annual Meat Conference in Texas, where AHDB and exporters had the opportunity to network with over 1,500 meat professionals from across the US. The visit was a success and resulted in valuable connections with American buyers, potentially boosting red meat exports. In this episode of the Food & Farming podcast, AHDB’s Dr Nerys Wright is joined by independent sheep consultant and SCOPS representative Lesley Stubbings. They discuss the Nematodirus forecasting map for 2023 and details of the sheep element of the recently launch Defra funded animal health and welfare pathway. Nematodirus forecasting The nematodirus forecasting map for 2023 is live and hosted on the SCOPS website. The map uses the daily temperature to monitor when the over winter larvae may hatch and the subsequent risk of Nematodirus this year in young lambs. Other risk factors to consider are the age of the lambs and the amount they’re grazing and ingesting. The Animal Health and Welfare pathway For the Defra funded animal health and welfare pathway, the registration process is now open. There is £436 available to sheep farmers with 51 or more sheep and have claimed BPS in the past. As part of the pathway, farmers can expect 2-3 hour visit from their vet, a report highlighting the key prioritise for that business and a summary of the results from their wormer treatment check (WTC). In order to ensure that farmers get the most out of this pathway, it is important to ensure FECs are taken as a representative sample, as fresh as possible and wormers only used when they are high enough to warrant a treatment. Discuss the efficacy results with your vet or SQP/RAMA. Rearing heifers is a substantial cost to your business with the return on investment not being recouped until they reach their 2nd lactation. Yet, on average, 17% of milking heifers exit the herd before this. Giving heifers the best opportunity to calve down for a 2nd time is not only important for your bottom line, but also the impact of herd longevity on your carbon footprint and consumer perception of dairy farming. That’s why it’s so important to monitor the performance of your milking heifers and consider management changes that will help them to adapt to herd life, allow them to finish growing – and to realise their genetic potential. AHDB research showed that calving by 24 months of age could reduce rearing costs and led to better survival and growth rates, as well as improved health, and fertility. As part of AHDB’s Calf to Calving programme, we saw a significant reduction across the country in age at first calving. Now, we’re taking a look at the next step. In this episode of the Food & Farming podcast, AHDB Dairy Knowledge Exchange Manager Shirley Macmillan is joined by AHDB Senior Health & Welfare Scientist, Dr Jenny Gibbons, whose work on calf and heifer rearing has highlighted many of these issues. In this episode of the Food & Farming podcast, AHDB’s Senior Knowledge Manager Amy Hughes is joined by Canadian suckler cow producer, Arron Nerbas, to discuss what makes a suckler system profitable including how genetics, selection and management pressure can be used to breed a cow that fits and performs well. Being clear about what you’re trying to achieve on your farm and using your system to select the cows that fit, is how the Nerbas Bros. have developed a profitable suckler cow that works for them and their system. Following Arron’s visit to the UK in January, funded by AHDB and the Aberdeen Angus Society, Arron and Amy reflect on the key discussion points from the event and how mindset is an important factor: “The real power isn’t in your grass or your cattle, the real power is in your mind.” The three host farms for the events: FAI Farms in Oxfordshire, Silas Hedley-Lawrence. Launceston Farm in Dorset, Jimi Collis and his herd manager, Matt House. Aln Angus farm in Northumberland, George Burrell. This podcast forms part of the AHDB Maternal Matters campaign, helping suckler producers breed heifer replacements which are efficient, profitable and fit for the future.
