Send us a text This week we are looking back at the worst domestic terrorist attack in US history. After the mess that the US government made during Rudy Ridge and the siege at Waco, many homegrown terrorist were angry and looking to take revenge against the government. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were two sure terrorist. Having grown up in the US, being former military and white supremacist, these two were ready to go after anyone to take revenge upon the government. Send us a text We got a bit of a lighter episode for ya this week, but its still a weird story. On July 14th 1518 Frau Troffea walked out of her home in Strasbourg France and began dancing. But this was not joyful twirling, line dancing, or any of the dancing we have today, instead it was a manic dancing that lasted well into the night and only stopped once Troffea fell asleep. But the next day she would wake up and start dancing again. Soon more people began joining her and before long almost 400 people had joined in the choreomania that would last for two months. Even today with the technology we have there is no way for us to know what caused this plague, or any of the others to follow. But I can definitely see it happening again in the future. Send us a text In 1992 the cult classic movie Candyman made it's way to movie theaters, and more than a few people recognized the story line to be much more than just a nightmare. For folks living in the ABLA homes, the thought of someone breaking in through their bathroom cabinets was not an irrational fear, but one they lived with daily. In comes 52 year old Ruthie Mae who had been a resident of Abbott homes for four years. Having lived a long hard life Ruthies was on the path to freedom and safety, but her journey was cut short when two young men broke in through her medicine cabinet and murdered her. And so a legend was born that has haunted generations for over three decades. And for those who still live in these buildings, it's more than a legend, it is their day to day life. Send us a text This week we are back in Chicago looking into one of the most infamous names to come out of the city, and can you believe it is not a black man?! Naw, Herman, as he was named at birth, was a descendent of the first english colonist. And just as with many people who were sent to the US, Herman would grow up with a thirst for violence. Many people know his name and have heard of his crimes but many do not know the real story behind Herman or his Murder Castle. Although his crimes may not be as numerous as we have heard, they were pretty twisted. Send us a text This week we are looking at Ida's life after meeting her husband and having kids. For some women, this would slow down their fight, but not for Ida. No, if anything being a mother to young black children fueled Ida's fight even more. Even with the threat of the federal government at her back, Ida kept on fighting for what she knew in her heart was right. Send us a text This first episode exploring black excellence during Black History Month looks at one of the bravest and most influencial black women in the history of the US. Ida B. Wells was born as an enslaved child before the emancipation proclimation just a few years later. She became an educator at a young age to take care of her siblings. As an adult she was never quite about the inequality and injustices towards black people. And her words put her in danger many times, but she never let the violence silence her. Things were going well until the went to land in Miami, and there was a malfunction with a light in the cockpit. This malfunction led to one of the worse aviation accidents in the history of flying. Send us a text We recently began binging a new to us show, the United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell and in the 3rd season he goes to the Low Country to meet the Gullah people. While there he learns about Robert Smalls, an enslaved man who stole a ship and sailed his family and friends to freedom. But Roberts tale is a small part of a much larger fight against colonization and enslavement. One that often gets buried in the tales of the indigenous fight against colonization. Which is a common tactic by white supremacist, pit the brown folks against each other. But this episode is just one that highlights the way enslaved folks and indigenous folks were able to work together for the betterment of all their people. Sidney Lanier was a Georgia boy who loves music. After a short military career during the civil war, during which he contracted tuberculosis, Sidney set out to find his place in the world. But his life would be cut short by the disease he had contracted earlier in his life. However the words he wrote and music he created will be around for ever. But by 1920 standards they are leaps and bounds better than they were. One area that got an upgrade in the 1920's was dam engineering in California. That was after one failed and took the lives of hundreds of people. I have a feeling Fred knew people were after him, but that did not stop him from living his life's purpose. Helping people. From the age of 10 when he cooked breakfast for other neighborhood kids, to running the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred worked his whole life to better the lives of others. And because he was good at it, and had the power to bring the poor masses together, the government had him murdered. Back in 1932 after the end of WW1 veteran's set out in Western Australia to farm wheat for the world, but they had a native problem, just not the one we grew up hearing about. This was an EMU problem. Thousands of Emus set out each year in the spring( our fall) to head to the coast, the problem's started when farmers began trying to grow crops in their migration path. Instead of trying to find a way to live with these animals, they set out to have them irradicated. Send us a text We have come to the end of the tale of the life and legacy of the 7th president of the United States of America, Andrew Jackson. After his busy military career Jackson set out, and accomplished, reaching the highest office in the land. His presidency was filled with drama, petty disputes, and genocide. Which aren't they all? But I do believe one of the greatest takeaways from learning this history is to be able to recognize when it is repeating itself right before your eyes. Send us a text So last week we looked at the forced removal of native nations from the southeastern US. One of the largest proponents of this removal was Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the US. But Jackson's life did not start out in circles of power. In fact tragedy would strike his family just weeks before Andrew was even born. And at the young age of 14 Jackson would become and orphan due to a series of events that set him up to be the man written about in history books. But Jackson was no hero. He was an angry man who did not surrender to anyone, which did lead him to have a highly successful military career. Send us a text This week we take a look at the forced removal of " The Five Civilized Tribes" of the southeast region of the US. Starting in the early 1800's with the Creek Nation the US government drew up treaties for the native nations, giving the government control of their land, and moving the tribe to new land west of the Mississippi. But when they refused to leave, the government forced them at gun point. Even for the ones who left on their own free would soon learned the government would not keep their promises and did not care about the nations at all.
