When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement. It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction. Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly. We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently. These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us. The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us. Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication. Hey, it’s me - T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement - things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more. We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America. I'm excited to welcome my friend, Kelly Greene, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, onto the podcast today! In today's part 1 episode, we're discussing holistic resilience and what rethinking strength and survival looks like. Kelly has experienced her fair share of trauma over the years and has often been told how resilient she is. While she may look like it on paper, resilient was not a word she would have used to describe herself years ago. Make sure to come back for part 2 with Kelly next week as we dive more into resilience - you won't want to miss it! In this episode, we cover: Kelly's "dark night of the soul" experience that led her to step away from practicing law and take a holistic approach to her life How holistic resilience has impacted Kelly + the work she does with her clients Why resilience does NOT equal grit 2 extreme ways that people typically react after experiencing a traumatic event Where resilience actually happens for us The Healthy 4 Hs + 8 factors that can help with building holistic resilience Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, we're talking about why we stay and the pull of the familiar, even when it hurts. As humans, we find comfort in familiarity. Our brains are wired for survival, and we LIKE what's comfortable and safe, even when it's actually the opposite of that. The pull of the familiar is SO strong, but it's not unbreakable. With curiosity, bravery, and support, it's totally possible to step out of what's comfortable and into something better. Change can be scary, friend, but this is also where growth happens (believe me - I know this ALL too well). If you need help in this area, I'm here for you, and I would be honored to walk alongside you on this journey! In this episode, I cover: Why we find comfort in familiarity Understanding what’s really going on when someone stays where they are My personal experience with staying comfortably numb for far too long Questions to ask yourself when you’re considering making a change Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about how we've navigated expectations in ranch life and marriage. We've learned that unspoken expectations are resentments waiting to happen. If you're going to have an expectation about XYZ, you've got to speak it - not everyone is going to have the same expectation or understand where you're coming from! We hope this episode gives you a more REAL insight into how we've navigated expectations in ranch life and marriage. We've both done the inner work on our own (as well as together); it takes time to get there, but it's absolutely worth it. Remember - speaking expectations are so, SO important. People aren't mind readers, and they can't meet expectations they don't know exist! In this episode, we cover: Tom’s experience with having high, unspoken expectations of others + how that’s changed What to consider if your expectations are consistently NOT being met The correlation between feeling safe & effectively communicating your expectations Making sure that YOU’RE in the right place mentally in order to help others Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, I'm talking about cleaning the shop and why feeling your feelings gets worse before it gets better. Many of us have been little hoardy hoarders with our feelings for years. When you finally decide it's time to start the process of working through your emotions, not only are you feeling your emotions in the moment, but you're also unpacking YEARS of emotions! Feeling your feelings is NOT easy - especially if it's something you've never done before. Fortunately, the clarity and peace you find on the other side will be SO worth it. I've experienced this in my own life, and I know it's possible for you, too! In this episode, I cover: What happens when you stop feeling your feelings + what it’s like when you DO Starting small when processing your emotions vs. tackling them all at once How to ground yourself as you work through this process What it feels like when you finally process your feelings & emotions in the moment How you can support others who are just starting this process Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! I'm honored to welcome a special guest, former Marine Jake Ogren, onto the podcast today! Jake is a husband, dad, and former Marine who chose to serve after 9/11 happened. After doing multiple tours in 12 years, he left the U.S. Marine Corps and has been shoeing horses for 10 years now. He's a good friend of ours and our horse's farrier, and since I've known him, we've had MANY conversations surrounding the topics of mental health, trauma, and taking care of ourselves. Basically, we're solving all of the world's problems in the horse barn! In today's episode, we're talking about what it looks like to go from toughen up to open up. Jake and I discuss the very well-known stigma in the ranching and ag space that is "toughen up and rub some dirt on it," as well as getting personalized support for YOUR mental health needs. In this episode, we cover: Jake's journey of joining the Marines Corps + what eventually led him to seek therapy for his mental health The all-too-common stigma of "toughen up and rub some dirt on it" in the ranching & ag community The importance of getting support for YOUR specific mental health needs + finding the right person to talk to Jake's advice for seeking help when you're hesitant to do so How therapy has impacted Jake in multiple areas of his life Common misconceptions about mental health in rural America Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Healthy boundaries are essential for protecting ourselves and our relationships, but unhealthy boundaries can isolate us and keep us from facing reality. I talked about why boundaries can be one of the kindest things we do for ourselves in episode 36 (you can listen here if you haven't or if you need a refresher). In today's episode, I'm talking about the process of maintaining your fences and the art of healthy boundaries. My favorite analogy to use in regard to boundaries is fences. We have a variety of fences we use on the ranch, and they all serve a different purpose. You have to be intentional about how you build and maintain boundaries so they truly serve you and your relationships well! In today's episode, I'm talking about what happens when pain finds you and a bit of a personal update on growth, healing, and hope. I was given news that no one EVER wants to hear when it comes to their health. As I'm currently walking through this new and unfamiliar situation, I can't help but think of how vital it is to process our emotions. When we choose to process (or, more often, NOT process) our emotions, this ultimately impacts our health. We can't suppress our emotions over and over again and expect our health not to take a toll in the long run! "Pain isn't a bug; it's a feature." I first heard this quote from grief expert David Kessler on the Dr. John Deloney Show (give it a listen HERE if you want to check it out). This particular phrase hit me, and it really stuck with me. In today's episode, I'm talking about the gift of pain and why we should stop ignoring it. Pain is not an anomaly - it's not meant to be shoved down or something we need to fix. Pain draws our attention to something so we can learn what's going on; it's an invitation for us to grow because it shows us what needs more focus and attention! In this episode, I cover: Changing how we view pain and its purpose for us What can happen when we ignore pain and the signals it sends us My experience with a major pain point in my own life Practical ways to engage with pain Getting curious on where pain is showing up in your life Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today's episode, Tom and I are talking about what burnout on the ranch looks like and how we're learning to recover faster. This fall was tougher than usual, and it seemed to drag on and on - we both felt that way throughout the season! We're also chatting about winter projects we're focusing on and what Tom's experience with burnout has been like. Burnout is incredibly real in this line of work, but it doesn't have to be your reality forever. If you've been in a similar season with burnout on the ranch and are ready for recovery, or you're simply looking forward to a slower time of year like we are, we hope this episode encourages you right where you need it! In this episode, we cover: The process of shuffling herds on the ranch + putting more woe back into the cows Why what we think we need to do to slow down or stop cattle ends up being the opposite of that Our upcoming winter projects What burnout on the ranch has typically looked like for Tom + how we've worked together when certain projects weren't going well this fall Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! As someone who grew up in rural America (and is still there), I'm very familiar with the mindset that comes along with this way of life. We're raised to keep our emotions to ourselves, work hard, and push through, no matter WHAT. Talking about our feelings and emotions is unnecessary and makes us look weak. In today's episode, I'm talking about breaking the stigma and what redefining strength in rural communities looks like. We can take simple steps toward breaking this stigma and start focusing on supporting our mental health and well-being and building resilient communities with thriving families. In this episode, I cover: The typical mindset that’s often ingrained in us in rural America What happens when we bottle up our emotions and ignore our mental well-being The collective resolution I want us to make in the new year Simple ways for us to begin breaking the stigma together Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In today’s episode, I want to share the hard truth about emotions because, well, you gotta feel them ALL. When it comes to emotions, we must understand that they themselves are not the problem, but rather, our resistance to actually feeling them is. If you’re someone who is used to numbing certain emotions, I really want you to get curious as to WHY you’re doing so. Instead of numbing, take time to recognize, feel, and accept your emotion(s). Then, you can get ready to bring joy and happiness into your life in a BOLD, new way! In today's episode, I'm talking about extending grace without accepting behavior. It's a universal truth that everyone has a reason for their actions - there is ALWAYS a why behind a behavior. Even when we don't know the whole truth (and we may never), we can choose to extend more grace. My challenge for you is to look for that story that you might have missed. Even if you can't find it, please know that there IS a story you don't know completely. After all, grace doesn't cost us that much, so let's start extending more of it today! In this episode, I cover: The concept of "we don't know what we don't know" and choosing to give a little more grace Understanding that everyone has a reason for their actions and there's always more to the story Why extending grace does NOT mean that you accept or condone behavior Why grace matters and its vital connection to emotions How we can extend more grace to others Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! In this episode, we cover: A pivotal experience that led to Warwick’s focus on relationship before horsemanship How working with horses started Warwick’s journey of unraveling and the role his podcast plays in showing the unraveling of our cultural and societal conditionings Ways to support horses with nervous system regulation using connection and how this applies to people, too How we are in charge of creating our own reality and how we choose to interact with any type of being (human or animal) Why it seems easier for us to extend grace to our animals rather than to our fellow humans The concept of waiting vs. doing when working with horses and why the nervous system isn’t meant to be calm all the time Why attachment and attunement are what humans need most but are also most lacking Connect with Warwick: Follow on Instagram and Facebook Check out his YouTube Listen to The Journey on Podcast Check out his website and online video library Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! Recently, my son and I were out riding. He was fascinated with wild onions and even got off his horse to pick some! I was quick to tell him that we were burning daylight and we needed to get back to work. But as kids, mindfulness allows us to see things in a new light and believe in the possibility of change, and it's time that we find our way back to that! In today's episode, I'm talking about reclaiming mindfulness and what it can look like when you're burning daylight or missing the moment. We'll explore how children's innate awareness can inspire our own mindfulness practice, how we can foster that in our kids, and some simple steps to reconnect with the present moment as adults. In this episode, I cover: How kids are naturally mindful, curious, and present in the moment (and how this gradually changes as we become adults) Why we lose awareness and mindfulness as adults, and how this impacts our kids Ways to reclaim our awareness and mindfulness as adults How we can foster awareness and mindfulness in our kids Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!
