Learn how to dodge scams to protect your money, then understand how to compare robo vs. traditional investment risks. What should you do if your credit card is compromised in a scam? Are robo-advisors riskier than traditional brokerage accounts? Hosts Sean Pyles and Elizabeth Ayoola discuss how to spot and respond to identity theft and dig into how robo-advisors stack up to traditional investing platforms to help you protect your financial life. They kick off Smart Money’s new Scam Stories series by welcoming guest Scramble Hughes, a circus performer and scam victim, who shares a real-life experience with credit card fraud. They discuss tips and tricks on recognizing red flags like mass spam messages, acting fast by calling the number on your card (not clicking links), and filing credit freezes with all three credit bureaus. Then, investing Nerd Bella Avila joins Sean and Elizabeth to discuss how robo-advisors compare to traditional brokerage accounts. They discuss risk levels in automated portfolios, SIPC insurance protections, and key factors to consider when choosing a platform like account minimums, platform stability, and user experience. RD Desiree Nielsen joins me to sort the chaff from the wheat, literally. We discuss all things gut health, and delineate the science from the fearmongering, buzzwordy marketing around gut health and microbiomes. She explains how the health industry has taken isolated nutrition truths about gut health and extrapolated, exaggerated and mis-contextualized them to push products and restrictive diets that claim to ‘transform’ your gut. We tackle myths about our microbiomes and discuss the demonization of seed oils. We debunk the efficacy of colonics as well as “probiotics for weight loss” (I’m looking at you Better Body Company!), and shed light on what information is and isn’t fact checked in the nutrition world. The pursuit of thinness at any cost has to stop. In this day and age most of us can see right through irresponsible comments like “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”, but how many of us can identify diet culture disguised as health? Do you know the line between health promoting behaviors and obsessive patterns? How do you get yourself out of food habits that began with good intentions but have now spiraled into compulsion? In today’s episode I’m joined by clinical social worker June Burke-MacDonald, a social worker who specializes in eating disorder recovery, to unpack all things disordered eating, both socially and clinically. We discuss the causes of eating disorders, how to navigate nutrition without dogma, misconceptions about eating disorders, and the insidious nature of calorie tracking. You don’t want to miss this one: if not you, then a friend, or a friend of a friend has been touched by the effects of diet culture and eating disorders disguised as health. Thanks for listening! When someone promises you health through a supplement that is branded, expensive and part of a pyramid scheme, you should know to run. Diet MLMs (multilevel marketing schemes) aren’t new, but the pushback they’re receiving is, thanks to the likes of Brittany Morgon. A nutrition and fitness coach by day, and a bad-ass MLM slayer by night, Brittany has her boot firmly planted on diet MLMs’ necks. She joins me today to explain how and why these pyramid schemes have such a tight grip on the community’s they prey on, specifically women, mom’s, military families and the chronically ill. You heard me. I want you to eat processed foods! Not necessarily more than other foods, nor as an overrepresentation of your diet, but in the ways you find convenient, balanced, joyful and practical. Because the truth is that most foods are processed, including nutrient dense foods like canned beans, vegetables, tofu and unsweetened yoghurt. In this solo episode I break down the Nova classification system that is responsible for classing foods as “processed” and “ultra-processed”. I explain its limitations and how the classifications are problematic. I illustrate why the foods under these classifications aren’t inherently unhealthy and why they should not be demonized. I outline how many nova-classified foods are actually health promoting, and that ultimately, our diets are greatly impacted by social determinants of health. Ultimately, your diet should support the life that you want for yourself, and joy, culture, convenience and celebration through food is a large part of that. Thanks for listening! The world of dietetics needs change and Hawaiian dietitian Ke’alohi Naipo is at the forefront of this movement. Ke’alohi is a weight inclusive, HAES aligned, Registered Dietitian who specializes in disordered eating. There isn’t a person or family unaffected by cancer. The dreaded disease doesn’t discriminate, but there are some cancer-promoting behaviors one can avoid. This is why the desire for knowledge about how diet can contribute to or prevent cancer, is so high. As we know by now, with a public appetite for health, comes misinformation. On this episode I am joined by Dr. Joe Zundell, who is a cancer researcher and scientist. Dr. Joe Zundell is a Ph.D scientist with 10 years of experience in cell and molecular biology techniques. He is passionate about simplifying cancer biology for the public and combating cancer misinformation. We discuss what cancer is, how it grows, and debunk some cancer nutrition myths. On this episode, my guest Dr. Joe Zundell talks all things cancer and nutrition - what’s proven, distinguishing correlation vs. causation of cancers with certain foods, and addresses the link between clinical obesity and cancer. We cover exacerbating nutritional factors and address myths and misinformation around diet and cancer. Thanks for listening! Please leave a review.
