In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. Welcome to the Wholehearted Podcast. We believe the life you long for, the life better than your dreams, is accessed through the heart. Yet, the truth is that there are splits and cracks in our inner lives, and until these are fully restored—united—made WHOLEHEARTED, we will not be able to fully realize the abundant life Jesus promised his followers. Indeed, God is pouring out more than enough life to abundantly overflow our lives, but like a bucket with holes, our lives rarely have the chance to fill up. As David connected in Psalm 23, the Lord must first “restoreth my soul” before “my cup runneth over” (Psalm 23:3, 5). Much of the abundant life God extravagantly pours out slips through the holes in our heart and soul. I’ve felt it and so have you. Wholeness of heart never arrives as one defining moment. No, becoming wholehearted is a journey. That's why Joel has teamed up with Shannon White, a licensed professional counselor, to help guide you into the wholehearted life you long for. Let's get started!

The Wholehearted Journey Book is available on Amazon or joeljohnson.org Here’s a fact we all need to embrace—everyone on earth has (or will) endure multiple traumatic experiences throughout their lifetime (e.g. the loss of a loved one, betrayal, bullying, a bad break up, church hurt, divorce, etc.) It doesn’t matter where you’re born, your upbringing or your social/economic circumstances, everyone experiences trauma. That’s a fact. The preponderance of psychological research proves this true. And to deny it, is to deny your opportunity to heal from it—become wholehearted—enter into that life, Jesus described as, better than you dreamed (John 10:10 MSG). The book of Genesis , not only affirms this reality—that everyone experiences trauma—but also reveals why it is so: " Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made ” (Genesis 2:8 NLT). Human souls were made for Eden. Yes, we were made for that perfect paradise. All of us were designed to be raised by perfect parents—by fathers and mothers fully available to love us, nurture us, mentor us, focus on us, play with us. This unrushed rearing, I’d imagine, might even joyfully take place over the span of several centuries (remember, death wasn't in God's original plan)—until we were fully mature—ready—and had actualized the most authentic version of ourselves—completely whole within, with them and with God. While humans were made for earth, we were not made for the present state of “this world” (Hebrews 13:14). Our heart and soul were not made to withstand our present—breakneck—pace, all the human hostility we face and the hurriedness to discover our "purpose"—then produce something purposeful—before we so quickly pass away. No, “this world” is not our home. We were made for Eden. Life—as we experience it today—is traumatic. We’ve all experience trauma—no matter how severe, or not, we believe it to be. According to Genesis (and psychological research), all of us need mending; all of us need restoration; all of us need to take a wholehearted journey. If this were not true, Jesus would never have needed to come “to bind up the brokenhearted” (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:8). wholehearted movie.com…

“ Human beings are wired for survival. As little kids we instinctually place a mask called personality over parts of our authentic self to protect us from harm and make our way in the world. Made up of innate qualities, coping strategies, conditioned reflexes and defense mechanisms, among lots of other things, our personality helps us know and do what we sense is required to please our parents, to fit in and relate well to our friends, to satisfy the expectations of our culture and to get our basic needs met. Over time our adaptive strategies become increasingly complex. They get triggered so predictably, so often and so automatically that we can’t tell where they end and our true natures begin. Ironically, the term personality is derived from the Greek word for mask (persona), reflecting our tendency to confuse the masks we wear with our true selves, even long after the threats of early childhood have passed. Now we no longer have a personality; our personality has us! ” said Ian Morgan Cron. In this episode, Joel and Shannon take help you distinguish between the persona ("mask") we all make growing up and the authentic one God created you to be! This is your moment to rediscover-and reclaim- the authentic you! wholehearted movie.com…

Forgiving and loving our enemies—giving our best to both believers and betrayers—does not equate with being weak, a push-over or someone else’s physical, emotional or spiritual punching bag. Loving your enemy, in a mature way, takes courage and does not mean you acquiesce to their every desire. No, mature love takes tremendous intentionality and courage to not perceive others through the eyes of “selective-sight” or “selective-sight in-reverse.” It takes courage and spiritual smarts to see someone’s strengths and weaknesses and love them accordingly. wholehearted movie.com…

Every child desires a dad. What boy doesn’t want a father who will teach him how to play sports, cheer him on from the stands, teach him how to build things, show him how to hunt or camp, and tell him he is the greatest son ever? Someone who’s able and willing to protect her and joyfully provide for her, yet who’s patient, present and engaged. Our souls were designed to be loved by a loving father. This primal father-need in us all cannot be downplayed, diminished or dismissed. It was placed there by God. The good news is, that God--our True Dad--is strong enough, tender enough, concerned enough, wise enough, wealthy enough, patient enough, and engaged enough to fulfill every father-need in our soul and lovingly father us through anything our earthly dad(s) didn’t. In this episode Joel and Shannon discuss the Father wound and how to heal it. wholehearted movie.com…
