When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

In this podcast, we have a chat about some of the big questions of life – from the meaning of life to how to be good – as we’re fascinated by them and want to help other people navigate them too.In each episode we discuss our views about a different big question, and we aim to do this largely from a non-religious perspective (because that’s where we both come from) but in an accessible and inclusive way. There’ll be big ideas, personal stories and occasional references to Star Trek – but don’t let that put you off! We don’t aim to have the full answers to each question but we’ll hopefully encourage you to think about them too! Andrew Copson is the Chief Executive of Humanists UK and Richard Docwra is a writer and the Director of Life Squared. The Big Questions with Copson and Docwra

In the final episode of this series we discuss death - a topic we don’t talk about enough in western society, but which is important to think about - both for our own sake and for those we love. We ask what death is, and what happens after we die. We explore why people have certain beliefs about death. We then consider how we can think about our own deaths in a more effective way, and get more out of our lives by doing so. We also discuss how we should think about other people‘s deaths, and what a ’good death‘ looks like. We discuss some personal stories of how we have experienced, and planned for, the deaths of loved ones and the important lessons we’ve learned from this. The Big Questions with Copson and Docwra

This week we discuss the big topic of happiness, via goth woodlice and Star Trek (of course). What is happiness? Should we be striving for it in our lives? What are the things that make people happy - and that don’t? Should we be focussing our societies more on the aim of promoting people’s happiness - and what would a ‘happy society’ look like? The Big Questions with Copson and Docwra

In this episode we explore the idea of belief. Not just what we believe about the origins of the universe, but also the more practical question of what we should believe about the many messages and views we encounter around us in day to day life. We discuss what each of us believes about the world, and how we came to form these beliefs. We also ask what steps people can take to form more realistic and better informed beliefs - about anything. The Big Questions with Copson and Docwra

A nice easy start to the series, in which we explore the meaning of life and solve it in 45 minutes.* In this episode we ask what people mean when they talk about the meaning of life. Is there an ultimate meaning? And what are the things that actually do give people meaning in their lives? Please subscribe and share this episode if you like it! *This is not entirely true @RichardDocwra richarddocwra.com Richard’s new book ‘Life – and how to think about it’ is out now – buy it here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08V4BFQWW @andrewcopson andrewcopson.com Andrew’s book ‘The little book of humanism’, co-written with Professor Alice Roberts, is out now – buy it here https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-little-book-of-humanism/alice-roberts/andrew-copson/9780349425467…
