Send us a text Right now, we are studying through the book of Joshua. Joshua is a bridge book from the time of the Exodus to the time of Judges. But just because it is a bridge doesn't mean it isn't filled with profound truth for us to unpack. One of the most prominent themes throughout the book of Joshua is how we are called to walk by faith and not by sight. For all of us to stand on the promises of God boldly and expectantly trusting him to come through. In Joshua, we see a man of God who says, "God, you are my plan A, and there is no plan B." My hope is that we, as believers, would walk in the victory Jesus has already won. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text This January and February we are working through a new series called "To the Bereans." These messages will be targeted at meeting our church right where we are, encouraging, exhorting, and challenging us to pursue the Lord with renewed vigor. This is different from my usual format, and it is a real stretch for me to do this, but as I have prayed, I feel like the Lord has put these deep "soul aches" deep in me as your pastor. I pray that the Lord uses these messages to speak directly to Berean so that we might be all he has called us to be. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. You can also reach out to us at admin@kodiakberean.com or call at (907)-486-4847. God bless!…

Send us a text Advent is meant to be a season of hope. Often, we find ourselves in seasons of tumult and trial, and on those dark nights of the soul it is easy to lose hope. It's also easy to feel like God is not there that He doesn't care about your pain or your suffering. As we study through Ruth, our aim is to show you how God's providence is always at work even when cannot see it. We want to show you how God knows and cares about everyone everywhere. God does not show respect because of status or ethnicity, God loves the whole world. So, buckle up with us as we dive into this little book all about a big God. Send us a text This fall, we are teaching through through the book of James. I am excited to unpack this little Epistle with you! James is a book about putting your faith into practice. James doesn't struggle with application; in fact, this book likely has more in common with the book of Proverbs than other New Testament letters. It's not that James ignores doctrine, but that he earnestly desires that what we know about God impacts how we live for God. James is a pastor, and as we unpack this book, we will see that it is his heart to shepherd us toward godly living. Send us a text Last week, we started our fall series through the book of James. This week, we will unpack how riches can impact how we face trials. It can be easy to think that if I just had more of "X", that my trial would be bearable. James confronts us Wirth the idea that in Christ we have all we need to remain steadfast through trials. Send us a text This week we are starting out our Fall series through the book of James. I am genuinely excited to unpack this little Epistle with you! James is a book about putting your faith into practice. James doesn't struggle with application, in fact, this book likely has more in common with the book of Proverbs than other New Testament letters. It's not that James ignores doctrine, but that he earnestly desires that what we know about God impacts how we live for God. James is a pastor and we will see as we unpack this book that it is his heart to shepherd us toward godly living. I am excited to see how this little book transforms me and our church community for God's glory! To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text Today is part 2 of a 2 part series on 1 Corinthians 12. Today we will unpack Spiritual Gifts. My goal is for us to leave with a fulsome understanding of spiritual gifts. We will ask and answer a few basic questions about spiritual gifts. First we will ask, "What are spiritual gifts?" Second we will ask, "Why does God give us these gifts?" and finally we will ask, "How do we learn our gifts and use our gifts?" God has apportioned Gifts of Grace for you. The gifts are not only meant to bless you but to bless the entire congregation. My prayer is that as we walk out of this morning we will be challenged and encouraged to take our place in the Body of Christ and activate for His glory! Send us a text Today we will be starting two-part series from 1 Corinthians 12 on the body of Christ. Have you ever said to yourself, "I love Jesus, but I don't really love the church." Maybe you have wondered if it is really necessary for Christians to be a part of the local church. After all, there are amazing preachers you can access online, and worship music that, sung by professionals, never misses notes. Why do we need to participate in a local church if we have all this? Moreover, many of us have experienced problems in Church where "Christians" have hurt us, caused division, or have failed morally. How can we commit to take part in such a broken and messed up organization? Today we will address this struggle and unpack why Jesus calls us as his followers to be members of the body. We will also see how intentionally integrating into the local church is essential for Christian flourishing. Send us a text AUDIO ISSUE FIXED.... This summer we have been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John and this Sunday is our last Sunday in John. Today we will unpack Peter's restoration in John 21. This chapter in many ways acts as an epilogue or post-credits scene to the book of John, but it is an extremely potent text about the power of Grace in the life of the believer. It is my hope and prayer that God would use this passage to help us rest in the grace of Jesus. Many of us try to earn the grace of God as if it is a loan that we must pay back, but grace isn't a loan it is a gift given to us from a loving God. We don't earn it, yet we live our lives in response to it. Our service to Him is our loving response to His great love for us. Send us a text This summer we ave been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be unpacking John 20, specifically talking through the resurrection of Jesus. It is not an understatement to say that the resurrection of Jesus is the linchpin of our faith. Some have sought to downgrade the resurrection by making it merely a spiritual story, turning the life of Jesus into a fable or myth. Others have asked if the resurrection really even matters because Jesus's teaching and example are enough for us to follow. People do this because the claim is SO EXTRAORDINARY. Scripture claims that Jesus was killed on a Roman Cross, placed in a borrowed tomb, and was risen 3 days later. This is an incredible claim that requires credible evidence. This morning we are going to unpack the evidence for the resurrection and seek to understand what the resurrection means. Send us a text This summer we have been doing into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be unpacking John 18-19 seeking to understand the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. Sometimes its easy to think that the God of the Old Testament is focused on justice, that He's a God who is angry and wrathful toward sin, while the God of the New Testament seems to be focused on grace, a God who is overflowing with love and mercy. So which is it? We know that God is immutable, meaning he does not change and is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore, so why this apparent contradiction? How can God be both perfectly just and overflowing with grace? Today we will explore this tension and see its beautiful culmination in the crucifixion of Jesus our Messiah who is filled with grace and truth. Send us a text This summer we have been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be in John 14-16 talking through the Holy Spirit's presence in our life. If you grew up in conservative evangelicalism this can feel daunting because much of the discussion about the Spirit has been centered on what the Spirit does or does not do in our day. So out of an abundance of caution many of us rarely, if ever, think about the Spirit, pray to the Spirit, or even seek to be filled by the Spirit because we are afraid to cross some theological boundary. It is my prayer and aim this morning to help you understand and see the beauty of God the Spirit, and to help you learn to walk by the Spirit in fullness for the Glory of God. Send us a text This summer we have been diving into the selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will unpack the resurrection of Lazarus. Have you ever found yourself questioning Jesus asking, "Where were you Jesus. I needed you!" I have been there and I know many of you have struggled through questions like this. Tragedy befalls us and we find ourselves questioning God's goodness, His sovereignty, His love for us, and possibly even whether He is actually God. If you have been there you are not alone and our passage in John 11 today speaks to this tension in your soul. So my prayer is this morning God would meet with you and help you see that He is the resurrection and the Life, that he is our messiah who conquered death so that we might have eternal life! Send us a text Have your ever been hangry, so hungry that you find it hard to even be kind to those around you? While we often think of our physical bodies experiencing hunger, rarely do we think about the spiritual hunger that screams within us to be satisfied. Our desire for justice, our longing for joy, our craving for peace, that overwhelming ache within our soul to be fully known and fully loved is spiritual hunger. All too often we think we can fill this hankering in our soul with things from this world: money, sex, relationships, family, power, security…but they are all broken cisterns, able to fill a little but ultimately leaving us feeling vapid and empty. In today’s text Jesus invites us to feast on the bread of life which is the only bread that will never leave us empty again. Send us a text Romans is widely considered to be Paul’s greatest letter, his magnum opus if you will. In no other place does Paul so clearly lay out the Gospel and its implications for life. Within Romans, Romans 8 is widely considered to be this letter’s greatest chapter, in fact, many pastors (including myself) consider Romans 8 to be the greatest chapter in all of Scripture. Why? Because in it Paul unpacks the glorious freedom we have in Christ by the power of the Spirit. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text Have you ever felt guilted into serving? Maybe a pastor, or a ministry leader presses you to serve, so you serve, but not from a place of joy but from a place of avoiding feeling guilty. On the flip side have you ever gotten so wrapped up in serving that your identity is subsumed by it? Instead of finding your identity in Christ alone, you find your identity in serving. Both of these types of serving are something Paul the apostle warns us about in Galatians. In this message Matt unpacks how to serve in a different way, how to serve each other by the power of the Spirit. Spirit empowered service is both joy-filled and life-giving. When we pour ourselves our for God’s glory and others’ good, when our hearts will swell with joy, and the body of Christ will flourish. Send us a text Today we are going to explore Galatians 5:25 - 6:5. One theme you will see repeated in this text is the danger of being "honor hungry." When we are honor hungry we get our sense of validation from how much glory we receive from others. Our life is spent in pursuit of personal honor and glory. We feel powerful and strong when we are doing better than other people, and we feel pathetic and weak when we are doing worse than them. In this passage the apostle Paul is inviting us to live in a different way, not feeling puffed up or deflated, but having secure joy that frees us from the comparison game. Send us a text Forgiveness is easy to understand and hard to enact. In our passage today Paul exhorts us to put away all the worldly ways of dealing with offense, and to put on a new way of dealing with hurt, a Christ honoring way of processing offense. A way that doesn't ignore or excuse hurt, a way that doesn't demand recompense or restitution, but rather a way that resembles our savior who sacrificially gave of himself for us while we were still his enemies. But how can we do that? Only by looking to and trusting in Jesus, and letting The Spirit empower us can we freely give costly grace to those who have wronged us. Send us a text Over the last 50 years our culture has slowly forgotten how to live in community. Over the last 5 years the atomization of people has only accelerated with more than 50% of adults saying they feel lonely, alone, or disconnected. Most of us crave deep connection to others but do not know how to cultivate it. That is what this series is all about, teaching our church to be a thriving community that has spirit filled fellowship and that helps everyone in the body of Christ to flourish. There is a real temptation in our day to come to church services and never get engaged in biblical community, but this concept is foreign to the Bible. Jesus called us to be a part of a Body, a faith family, and it is in community that our faith will flourish. Jonah was stuck in a way of thinking that was destroying him from the inside out, causing him to devolve into anger and depression, ultimately resenting God. This will always happen when we see God’s commands as bad news to be obeyed, rather than good news to be enjoyed. Jonah resents that Gods mercy and grace was being given to those he despised. And through a vine, worm and wind God exposes Jonah’s wicked heart and shows Jonah his compassionate heart. Jonah fell into the same mistake many of us do namely the a mindset that says “compassion for me, and judgement for thee.” Let us pray that our hearts would be conformed to Gods heart which is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Send us a text "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." This quote is attributed to Jim Elliot, but could just have easily been uttered by the Apostle Paul. When we have given our lives to Jesus we have eternal live which we cannot lose, we eagerly look forward to the crown of righteousness that is ours in Christ Jesus. This truth should propel us to radical sacrifice for love of Jesus, not to earn eternal life, but because it is already ours. When we truly love Jesus, we will surrender our lives as a drink offering, we will pursue the course he has for our lives, we will fight the good fight, and we wukk hold firm to our faith in all circumstances because our faith is at the center of our identity. Send us a text Happy Mothers day! It is a privilege and a joy to get to serve alongside so many wonderful moms in our church. Today we will be diving in to 2 Timothy 3 and unpacking how those around us influence us, especially those in positions of leadership in our lives. I am struck particularly by how Paul states to Timothy "from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." Timothy did not seem to have a father who was pointing him to Jesus, but his mother and grandmother poured the truth into him from the time he was a baby. Send us a text Pastors and elders have the great privilege of getting to help shepherd the flock of God. This is one of the most wonderful and joy-inducing roles a person can take on, but it is heavy responsibility. The enemy wants nothing more than to see the church fail; therefore, ensnaring church leaders in sin is one of his highest priorities. Paul knows this, and is writing to help Timothy navigate the difficult terrain that pastoring can be. But this message isn't just for Timothy and other elders, it is for all of us. In today's text Paul exhorts Timothy to "remember Jesus Christ." Paul is not exhorting Timothy to remember Jesus in the objective sense, but rather remember Him in a relational sense. We are regularly tempted to forget just who Jesus is to us, to forget what our relationship to Him means for us in this life, and instead of living as heirs who will inherit eternal life and reign with Jesus, we live as orphans. My prayer is that as we walk through this book, Jesus would saturate our lives to overflowing, that He would radiate your faith in all situations for the Glory of God, that we might put away fear and let the Lord fill us with his power, His love, and a sound mind that comes from Him. Send us a text Good morning and happy Easter! I am so excited to worship with you on this resurrection Sunday. This morning as we worship our risen savior it is my hope that the Lord would stir you up and fill you to overflowing with the Holy Spirit. This morning from John 20 we are going to explore how following Jesus requires both rational and relational faith. To simply believe that He is the risen Son of God does not make you a follower of Jesus, even the demons believe this truth. No, it requires both rational belief and giving yourself to Jesus completely in mind, body, and soul. My prayer is that everyone would leave this message with both rational and relational faith in Jesus! Send us a text Today we will be diving in to the heart of the book of Hebrews. Hebrews is one of the most theologically sophisticated books in the bible, but don't let that throw you, this book packs a punch. This was likely a sermon delivered to a Jewish congregation, and is meant to show us how Jesus is better than everything else, and since he is better lets fix our eyes on Him, following Him even in the face of danger, reproach, and pain. In Christ we have something worth so much more than our lives. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text be bringing the Word and I am genuinely excited to hear from him. Pray for him as he opens up this last section of 1 Timothy. I believe God is going to encourage, convict and edify us through His Word this morning. I also wanted to invite you over the next 14 days leading up to Easter to join me on a spiritual journey of prayer and fasting. This is meant to be a time of spiritual renewal, hope, and joy and I would love to share this time with you. There are study guides in the foyer and digital ones will be made available online at our website. There will also be a short 5-10 minute podcast each day to accompany the study. Send us a text To take part in the 14 days of prayer and fasting please checkout our sister podcast "spiritual reset" on your podcasting app. “Just turn it off and turn it back on again.” - Roy from the I.T. Crowd I am so glad you are reading this. I believe God is going to use this study to grow us individually and as a church. What are we doing? We are taking the next 2 weeks to pray, fast and feast on God’s Word and to give ourselves a spiritual reset. What is a Spiritual Reset? It is meant to be a time where we turn down the noise of the world and amplify the voice of the Lord. To be a short season where we withdraw from distractions and draw near to the throne of grace. During this time, you will be invited to pray continually, fast regularly and feast on God’s Word consistently. Who Should Use this Study? This study is meant for people who have entrusted themselves to Jesus, as Lord of their life. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, this study would not only be tedious but also would likely make little sense to you, as it has been deliberately written to have its participants engaging with God directly. However, if you are reading this and want to be united to Jesus, you can give your life to him right now. Pray a prayer like this: “Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that I deserve to be separated from you because of my sin. But I believe you are the son of God and I believe that you died on the cross for sinners like me. I believe you were resurrected, proving you have the power to save sinners like me. Jesus, I give myself to you body, mind and soul. I surrender to your Lordship and I will live for you alone! Amen” If you prayed that just now, please reach out to me at matt@kodiakberean.com . I would love to follow up with you and walk you through what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. How to Use this Study Set aside at least 30 minutes each day to engage with God’s Word and to pray. This may seem like a lot but with so many distractions in this world, slowing down and resting in Christ is one of the best ways that we can reset our souls. This is written as a morning Bible study with “Live It Out” prompts for that day. But I know some of you night owls will prefer the evening and I will encourage you to then use those prompts for the next day. Each day you will be directed to: Feast on the Word: This is feasting on God’s Word; meditating on it, studying it and thinking through the implications. Guided Prayer: There will be a guided prayer that is aimed at helping you to engage the heart of God. Live it Out: Put what you are learning into practice by kneading truth into your life. Family Discussion (if applicable): Talk through what you are learning with your kids to try to get it down on their level. Finally, there will be a short (5-10 min) podcast coming out everyday that will unpack what you are learning and challenge you in your faith. You can find it on our website www.kodiakberean.com/reset , on our Facebook, Instagram or on your podcast feed under Spiritual Reset Kodiak. I really encourage you to listen as they will help draw everything together. I believe God is willing and wanting to do amazing things in and through you during this reset; let Him! The enemy will do his best to distract your mind, distress To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, this verse from 1 Timothy 6 is often misquoted and used out of context. Today we are going to unpack the corrosive effects of the love of money as well as the life-giving effects of complete contentedness in Christ. God has blessed us richly with riches beyond what most in the world could even dream, yet most of us don't think of ourselves as rich, in fact many of us spend time lamenting how poor we are. This message is meant is to wake us up to the reality that we might be blind to our materialism, so that the Lord might cultivate godly contentedness in us. -Matt To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text Timothy 5:17-6:2 helps us understand how followers of Jesus are to relate to authority. In a world where we are encouraged to disparage, doubt, and even rebel against those in authority over us, the bible has a radically different take. We are called to trust God by submitting to imperfect leaders and even honoring them. This is more than begrudging submission it is supporting our leaders in every way we can without supporting sin; to seek our leaders good and to support them as they do their best to the glory of God! Send us a text One of the most compelling things about our faith is its emphasis on compassion and care for those in need. But why do we emphasize this? Because at the core of our faith is Jesus, who saw us in our need and had compassion on us…showing us grace and mercy. So as followers of Jesus we do the same, having compassion for those in need, showing mercy, and extending grace to those who are in need. From the beginning God has shown extra care for those who are most vulnerable like widows, orphans, single moms, refugees, and persecuted peoples. Our goal is that as we follow Jesus our hearts will bend towards the vulnerable as well. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text How can we grow in godliness? So many Christians through the ages have struggled with this question. Some have pushed the idea that we grow in godliness through severe self discipline. This approach to sanctification leads to self righteousness not godliness. Others believe in a passive “let go and let God” approach to sanctification. This doesn't work either, it created passive hedonists who feel powerless against their sin. So how can we grow in Godliness? Not by passivity or by severe self discipline, but by toiling and striving everyday to know Christ fully, love him deeply and glorify him completely. This will produce a transformed life that is full of joy and distinct from the world. To learn more about our church or get connected please check out our website www.kodiakberean.com. Send us a text Have you been affected positively by a Christian leader? For many of us the answer is yes. At some point in our life an older believer poured into us, encouraged us, and helped us get unstuck. Sadly the inverse is also true, many of you have been negatively affected by a Christian leader at some point, whether it was through intentional malice, ignorant boorishness, or silent passivity, it is likely that many of you have been hurt by unhealthy Christian leaders. It saddens me that many of you have had to go through this, and it is my hope that as we unpack this passage today, the Word of God will give you the tools to recognize healthy Christian leaders. Send us a text Audio is rough at the beginning but gets better a few minutes in. Today we start 1 Timothy, and I am so excited to dive into this book with you all! First Timothy is all about the gospel. It explores how the gospel leads to practical and visible change in believers’ lives. It is a book aimed at correcting error and abiding in the truth. Of all the books in the Bible it might be the most practical for grasping how the gospel shapes how we operate as a church. Moreover, Paul goes to great lengths to contrast the true gospel with the vain religiosity that had crept into the Ephesian church. The former produced the fruit of the Spirit while the latter produced controversy, division, and fruitless talk. It is my hope that as we study this book the Lord will produce good fruit in us! Send us a text At Berean we often say we are called to “make disciples, mature disciples, and mobilize disciples to the Glory of God.” But how do we do that practically? What does it look like in the real world. This passage in 1 Kings 19 helps us to see what discipleship looks like practically and how we all might be involved in it. Send us a text Is depression and despair a sin? When a person is feeling depressed is it okay to seek physical help and therapy alongside spiritual things like prayer and the Word? There are so many questions like this that I hear on a regular basis, and while this episode in Elijah’s life does not explicitly explore all the intricacies of how we ought to interact with modern psychology it does give us helpful tools for understanding how God ministers to Elijah in his despondency. God ministers to the whole person, he cares for him physically, he interacts with him therapeutically, and he ministers to him spiritually. In doing so he pulls Elijah out of the bog of depression that was seeking to keep him stuck and sinking. Send us a text in this message on Verses 9-13 of John 1 we are going to talk through the new birth. What does it mean to be "born again"? This was the question Nicodemus asked in John 3 and it is a question that we all must wrestle with. Because it seems clear in scripture if we want to be followers of Jesus we must be "born again." So how are we born again, This text will help us unpack not only what being born again is, but also what its not. We will learn why everyone, religious and rebellious, moral and alike must be born again. Moreover we will explore how rebirth differs greatly from religion. Send us a text There is something about eyewitness testimony that is hard to ignore! Often in courtrooms eyewitness testimony is the difference between guilty and innocent verdicts. This is especially true if the witness is known for impeccable character. This morning we are going dig into the testimony of John the Baptist, an eyewitness of impeccable character, who openly testifies that Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John believed that Jesus was the son of God, and openly proclaimed him to be the Messiah. Why? Because John saw Spirit descend on Jesus and remain with Him with his own eyes. We too are witnesses of Jesus’s power: His power to save us from our sin and to baptize us with the Holy Spirit. Send us a text I love training montages, nothing motivates me more to get out and try to do something hard than watching Rocky Balboa punch sides of beef and chase chickens! Even hearing the Rocky theme song makes me want to go for a run. Today we get to look into God’s training grounds for one of his most fruitful prophets. But here is what is so cool, though Elijah was fruitful and a part of some extraordinary miracles...Elijah was ordinary. The Bible tells us that he was a man with a nature just like us. (James 5:17) So how did God train up this ordinary man? 1 Kings 17 is Elijah's training montage and in it we are going to see how God’s boot camp is unlike any other. Send us a text In today’s passage Jesus gives his disciples a new command. To love one another like Jesus has loved them. This might be the hardest command Jesus gives. Why? Jesus’s love for the disciples is selfless in nature, sacrificial in application, unbreakable in its security, unending in scope, unrestrained in affection, and unsearchable in its vastness. How can we love each other like this? What would it look like if we began to resemble this in our love for the body of Christ? I believe that when we begin to comprehend gods love for us, we will be filled to bursting with the "the fullness of God”. Only then, when we are overflowing with gods love, can we begin to love each other the way Jesus loves us. So let us glut on God’s love for us.
