Dr Pamela Douglas is an Australian GP, researcher, author, and an international leader in caring for parents and babies, with a special interest in perinatal mental health and breastfeeding medicine. Over the past 20 years, Pam has published the evidence base to the programs known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC, or 'The Possums Programs'), translating the research into education programs offering a paradigm shift in the way we help families who face breastfeeding, baby sleep, and cry-fuss challenges. Her groundbreaking work is detailed in 30 international research publications and her best-selling book, The Discontented Little Baby Book. In this conversation, we discuss how to optimize infant development, parental well-being, and grow joy in early life. Pam emphasizes the importance of experimentation and frequent, flexible breastfeeding in the early days and also discusses the Gestalt method of fit and hold. In terms of sleep, Pam acknowledges the polarizing nature of the sleep training debate and highlights the need for individualized approaches to sleep based on the unique needs of the baby and family. We also discuss the importance of understanding the biological needs of babies when it comes to sleep, emphasizing that sleep distress in our society is often caused by societal and health system-induced beliefs and practices that are not evidence-based. Pam highlights the variability in babies' sleep needs and advocates for a more evolutionary and intuitive approach to parenting that focuses on meeting babies' sensory and motor needs. Dr. Lyndsey Hookway is a pediatric nurse, researcher, author, lactation consultant, and advocate for gentle parenting practices. Lyndsey believes that sleep is an art and a science influenced by various factors such as relationships, stress, and social interaction. She challenges the cultural trend of actively managing sleep through non-responsive approaches like cry-it-out methods, emphasizing the importance of communication and responsiveness in parenting. The amount of sleep a newborn needs can vary greatly, from 8 to 18 hours a day, so it is important for parents to understand their baby's individual sleep needs and cues. In this bonus conversation, Whapio Diane Bartlett, a birth expert with over 40 years of experience, joins my partner, Kendra Adachi, and me to discuss our upcoming birthing experience. Whapio discusses the need for deeply connected women who can provide support and reassurance without interfering in the birthing process. She also highlights the shift towards women and families wanting their own birth experience and the desire for mentoring rather than management. The conversation explores the importance of honoring the natural process of birth and the role of the father as an advocate and supporter. It underscores the sacredness and wisdom of the birthing experience and the need to trust the body's instincts, touching on the emotional challenges and doubts that arise during pregnancy. Overall, this chat provides reassurance, wisdom, and guidance for our upcoming birth and initiation into parenthood. Whapio has been an independent midwife and educator since 1985. Whapio Diane Bartlett has been an independent midwife and educator since 1985. In 2001, she founded The Matrona, an online portal providing entry-level holistic education for midwives, doulas, and birth attendants. The focus and curriculum are centered on melding the intuitive with the academic and the mystical with the intelligent. In this conversation, Whapio shares her perspective on birthing and the changes she has seen over the years, emphasizing the importance of mentoring rather than managing women during birth, the shift towards women and families making their own choices, tapping into instinctual responses, and building trust. Whapio also discusses the stages of birth, from the foothills to the portal, and the importance of creating a supportive environment for women during labor, including the need to trust the body's instincts and the role of fathers as support persons during birth. She qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2009 and specializes in the perinatal period - the time around pregnancy, birth, and the early years of parenthood. She has a particular interest in attachment, trauma, and the intergenerational roots of our problems. Mainstream parenting narratives often create narrow expectations and can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It is important to disrupt these narratives and find parenting approaches that align with individual values and circumstances. Open communication and collaboration between partners are crucial in parenting. It is important to have conversations about expectations, roles, and values before a baby's arrival to avoid conflicts and resentment. Western cultures lack adequate training and support for parents, leading to feelings of isolation and overwhelm. Building a community-based approach to parenting can provide the necessary support and guidance for new parents. Babies are highly sensitive to their caregivers' emotional states, and tuning into their needs and emotions can create a strong and nurturing parent-child bond. New parents need support and reassurance from a community or village-like network. Seeking support and validation from others is important to counteract the narrative that parents should cope independently. Breaking generational cycles is a process that involves bending the cycle rather than completely breaking it. _______________________________________ Want to work with Jeremy?
