On this episode we had our first opportunity to do a Live Podcast recording. We headed back to our MPT program at Western University in London, Ontario to have a cup of coffee with the second year PT students. One of our former professors and past podcast guest Darryl Yardley invited us out to his Business Symposium to talk about starting a podcast, the importance of social media, and why it's important to explore other avenues outside of the PT profession. We want to give a thank you to every single student who came out to the event and an even bigger thank you to the 5 students who came on the podcast to ask us questions. This experience was truly surreal for us as we sat in that classroom as students a year ago! We hope you all enjoy this episode as much as we did! On this episode Dalton and Will sit down over a cup of coffee and discuss why they have found social media so valuable as PT Students. We recorded this podcast on the way to Toronto to connect with people who we met over...you guessed it...social media. We talked about 3 areas that we really felt social media helped us as PT Students. This doesn't mean that you have to go out and start your own account. But, we wanted to share why we think the profession should leverage these platforms more and how they can add value. You can listen to this episode on iTunes, Play Music, and Spotify. During this episode, Will discusses a common challenging situation that occurs during clinical placements. Disagreeing with your clinical instructor (CI) presents a unique dilemma because you are a young clinician who is eager to learn and become effective at helping others. Will has had this experience himself, and is sharing some of the strategies he used to maximize his experience. None of these strategies are intended to be perfect. However, we feel there are ways to learn from all experiences, and we have to power in ourselves to make sure that we do. We’ve been discussing what makes a good CI during our consolidation period at school, but we can’t control this as students. What you can control is your attitude, and your tenacity to learn as much as you can! As always, please get in touch with us! Let us know if these strategies are helpful for you preparing for placements, going through one right now, or helping a friend. We’d also love to know what you’ve done to maximize your learning in this situation. If you’re a CI, let us know what you’ve learned to improve as an instructor! Or if you’re going to be one in the future, get in touch with us and we can talk about some of the characteristics our classmates felt we important for being an effective CI.
